It’s running a built 1.7 lada engine with bigger cams etc, makes 170BHP and is very responsive. Also running a close ratio dog box. So much fun 🙌

@@toshictoshic, no, on these cars do not use engines from fwd VAZ models, only from rwd Ladas or from Niva (on the car that was provided to James, most likely the engine from Niva). The fact is that rear-wheel drive Ladas were produced until 2011 and were equipped, among other things, with improved 16-valve injection engines. It is these engines that are used in drifting, they are even turbocharged for summer drifting and rally, getting power up to 240-260 BHP

The Winter Drift Battle actually started out as a multi-brand competition with mostly japanese cars, but at some point a dude in his station wagon Lada kept winning, and then other people started buying Ladas too. Other cars just turned out to be either less controllable or slower, when driving on ice. And the station wagons just turned out to be faster than the sedan Ladas because of the aerodynamics when moving sideways, that's why you see a lot of wagons, and that's why the sedans have the big spoilers or the polycarbonate sheets at the back.

Yeah, that's all thanks to the weight (or lack of one, more precisely) mostly. Plus all transmissions are swapped which is why you hear that typical rally sound... Those are straight-cut gears in dog-box transmissions. Engines, though... Throw some cams, intake, exhaust and maybe some compression with beefed up wiring, tune it and you'll get everything you need from engine for ice drifting. I mean, really, those engines are mostly stock, coming straight from Lada Vesta. No need for more than 170-200 bhp for cars that weigh around (or even less than) a ton with driver.
