She was spot on about why nepotism exists. It’s so deeply rooted into the very start of our culture. The inheritance of your parents status, caste, job etc. Whether it’s right or wrong, it is rooted in our society and culture. Dukaanwale se lekar actor tak. It’s all nepotism. It’s all a business. Again, not justifying it, but rather explaining that it’s not a new phenomena that just sprung out of nowhere and is exclusive to Bollywood.
@nishthaarora9533
@nishthaarora9533 3 жыл бұрын
I feel like at this point we can understand the bigger problem with nepotism in the film industry as opposed to nepotism in other areas, you can't make someone an artist or a creative person. There is always some level of technical training in every field but the difference between being a good actor and a great actor (apart from training, which is funnily something very easily available to star kids but they never bother) is nurturing your creativity. You can't become a painter just because your dad was, or a writer, but people will half-ass their way into these fields too. Being a lawyer in your dad's company, a doctor in your mom's clinic, and the owner of your grandfather's shop is different because all of these require technical training to reach an almost perfect level of success. It isn't the same with creative jobs so the argument that nepotism exists everywhere from lawyer to actor doesn't hold.
@Lazymath007_

It's not just about culture. Nepotism exists across the world and there's nothing wrong with it. If the owner bears the financial risks, he gets to decide too whoever the fu*k he wants to hire in his company
@Lazymath007_
@Lazymath007_ 3 жыл бұрын
@@nishthaarora9533 at the end of the day the acting industry is just like any other business. It needs enough revenues to survive. As a result, decisions need to be made. You cant just hire anyone in the industry, you need someone that will gurantee ROI. So yes it's not the same thing as a "writer's son will become a writer". The industry is a business and it's the same as a child working in his grandfather's shop. If the owner bears the financial risks, he also gets to decide whom he wants to hire in his company
@nishthaarora9533
@nishthaarora9533 3 жыл бұрын
@@Lazymath007_ And that is a fantastic way to miss the point! No, the film industry should not be like any other industry because employers need to worry about long-term goals along with meeting short term revenue requirements. If you keep degrading an industry's level and its medium, people will shift to a medium that gives quality content, which is why theatres are threatened by OTT platforms. Any business student with half a braincell could see this problem, supporters of nepotism like you really just need to go to college. Pick a good one with a business or marketing and research programme.
@Lazymath007_
@Lazymath007_ 3 жыл бұрын
Why do you automatically assume that star kids are bad actors. Ranbir Kapoor, Shahid Kapoor, Hrithik Roshan and Alia Bhatt are all good actors. Also you have no knowledge about business. You'd obviously hire your son/daughter in your company and not your neighbor's child. A firm doesnt only function with hardwork, it functions with trust. Nepotism is about trust. I dont know about your upbringing but I always told as a child to network as much as possible. In fact business graduates and MBAs rely a lot on networking too. We Instead of complaining "life is unfair", go out there and exchange ideas with people, hopefully it improves your intellect which you clearly seem to lack...

I absolutely fucking loved Luck By Chance. I remember watching it in the theater with my parents and the theater was pretty empty and that was a good thing because certain dialogues were soo subtle and poignant that you needed serenity around you to process them. Also my parents waited till the last song (O Raahi Re) played with the credits.. And my mother just loved the lyrics of that song.

I am so glad I revisited this interview again . It's obvious that Zoya is a very self aware artist and does not really see herself as an inspiration, especially to women. But her fierceness, her unapologetic attitude and her honesty in everything she does is such an inspiration to all women out there. As a woman in a creative field myself I am so amazed by how she never uses the fact that she is a woman as an excuse to oversell her success or undermine her failures. She really does show that there is no such thing as a 'female director' only good directors or bad.

Idk why they they point out nepotism for other professions as soon as topic comes up. Bollywood and other film industry has media spotlight and platform. The least they could do is be aware of what they're putting out in terms of quality of work, problems and or issues on the industry be it nepotism or workplace harrasment. They should focus on that and not divert and say it's everywhere so what's the big deal. Like you said it's not everywhere and nepo won't work as easy as it does in film industry. How about ask the question it's easy to have a career in bollywood due to nepotism compared to other professions.

@@rasikameeramahabal6292 Maybe it didn't work in your case, but connections do help you get to a lot of places in life. If you know or are related to any minister or politician, your life does become easier. Even in America, if your parents are Ivy League students, you can be admitted into Ivys through 'Legacy.' If you are born to businessmen, chances are you are likely to inherit the business. You of course would know about kingships. Nepotism DOES and has always existed in many walks of life and this is simply a fact. :) Plus, even if you have tried using your connections at Google to further your position or something similar, is it really much of a surprise that star kids try to leverage the fame and power of their parents? ;)

5:32 - 5:39 - "Nepotism is not a problem" - Both ZOYA and FARHAN at different times. I can't believe that they made an honest and unfiltered film like Luck by Chance. They act like Dimple Kapadia and Isha Sharvani's characters from the film :/ How thoroughly disappointing. Why do industry born people say shit like "So much for nepotism"? Just because outsiders struggle, work really hard and make it does not mean "NEPOTISM DOES NOT EXIST" or "SO MUCH FOR NEPOTISM". Just because SRK, Rajkummar Rao, Richa Chaddha are successful and Fardeen Khan, Zayed Khan and Abhishek Bacchan are not, doesn't mean the latter 3 didn't benefit from nepotism (they very much did, the fact that Abhishek Bachchan still gets films and Sharman Joshi doesn't proves that). It means that the first three worked extremely hard and developed their craft in a way the latter three didn't. As you yourself said Zoya, Reema had the right attitude/perspective which, when she shared with you, you also benefited from. If you don't have the right attitude/perspective, you won't succeed regardless of where you're from (though you are given many more chances after failure if you're from the industry, ref. Abhishek's 17 flops in a row). And I'm sure Reema struggled in many other ways you're not even aware of, because from your myopic viewpoint, you see that 'This woman who comes from Assam made a film before me so nepotism doesn't exist, boo hoo'. Your only issue was that actors were saying no to you. Must've hurt to 'sit and struggle' through that :'( She must've had 50 other issues in getting her film MADE in the first place.

Avik Dickens When did she say nepotism doesn’t exist??
@avikdickens4988
@avikdickens4988 6 жыл бұрын
@@loveamazingstuff12 She said that nepotism is not a problem/star kids don't have it easy aka "So much for nepotism!" Her exact words are not "nepotism does not exist", but she's disregarding it's major role in the industry. My bad though, so I've made a change in my comment.
@loveamazingstuff12
@loveamazingstuff12 6 жыл бұрын
@@avikdickens4988 I understand what you're trying to say but with all due respect I'm sure Zoya realises the extent and consequences of nepotism. She is an intelligent woman, and I took her "so much for nepotism" as a joke she said and she too herself laughed after it.

@avikpandey5861 6 жыл бұрын
@@loveamazingstuff12 It's easy to put a view out there (especially one which may be controversial) through the medium of laughter, which is what she did. She stated her view on nepotism in an offhand remark.

No mention about Hrithik ? A Superstar playing the Superstar with all the Superstar traits, that's not a role which everyone would take up. And Hrithik just nailed it.

i find it A LITTLE queer that whenever this fabulous film is metioned along with other great characters in it like of rishi,dimple,konkana,farhan even the small guest role by srk bt hrithik aka jaffar khan is left out..i think he can have a seperate movie of his own a pretty interesting character

When someone says the movie was way ahead of its time, what they necessarily mean in bollywood and indian context, is the movie was way ahead of internet. Regular audience until 2010 was not exposed to foreign films, especially hollywood except superhero films, and were unaware how things can be said subtly without spoon feeding and how you look at a film not just as a story or news event asking things like 'hota kya hai movie me' and 'message kya tha' but to understand the characters of the movie and what they go through is what the movie is about. Even though not all people value this content today, thankfully exposure to world cinema has made a good amount of people understand better art.

She is so goddamn talented, articulate, well read, well rounded, and with so much perspective. Can't imagine what it must be like to be her. Role model and inspiration forever!!

Zoya, you go girl! I have to say that I did watch this movie in the theater, and it remains to be my go-to movie. On the other hand, about Nepotism, no one is expecting the insiders to be apologetic. Although, yes, to be acknowledging of their privilege. It will not take away from their talent and hardwork, they can actually see that conversation as a chance to talk about their struggles as star kids.
