Jacob Muniz zip used this book 1960, moved to the intermediate book, then to the Eck Method book. I just purchased the Rubank Intermediate book again recently to get me back in shape. I used to be very good. Now, ummm... not so much. I even have to work on hand position so I can use my open holed flute without plugs.

This was my first book too (I think) back in 1960!!!!! at age 9. I did not start studying privately until age 15 and then I had a GREAT teacher my jr. and sr. years of high school (I won't drop names). I had a revelation earlier this evening after my swim that I started playing flute 59 years ago! So my 60th anniversary will be in 2020.

At this moment I am self learning from the Rubank book 1 and also play from duets book , both given to me by a flute playing friend. Music timing is my bane, but I'm improving. I find myself watching flute performances and zooming in on the video to study their embrasure so to improve my own.

my band director just let me switched to saxophone and the first book i worked to of was the essential elements book but i only worked out of it for the fingerings because he also gave me this years concert music witch was stuff like arabesque, persis overture, and mars: bringer of war. I cried a lil but to everyone's surprise, even myself, i picked it up really quick and i was playing advanced music in no time. How is that even possible? (keeping in mind that i only really started to be passionate about music the same year. I've had some lessons on piano when i was 7-8 but thats about it. Im 16 now and and i switched from trumpet to saxophone)

My school uses the Bruce Pearson "Standard of Excellence" books, and I'm a book ahead than my band peers, and the reason for this is because no one takes their instrument and practices at home. I haven't had a single lesson with my band teacher during the day in about two years because my grade doesn't work with her schedule and last year, my schedule was so messed up that I didn't even have a band day and now the kids in my previous grade now have their singular lessons.

My first flute book back in 1998 was A Tune a Day: Flute, Book 1 by C. Paul Herfurth and Hugh Stuart This book was great! I went on to book 2 and then onto print copies and orchestra music while I was at school. Since school I play mostly hymns and new age church music. I wish I had more time to play outside of work and church but its great to be able to play when I can. I really miss my Artley flute (It's in my home country). I am playing a really cheap flute these days, that while it sounds okay, doesn't sound anywhere near as nice as my other flute. I want to upgrade so badly.

They teach through real tunes, like folk tunes from various backgrounds and occasionally simplified versions of orchestral things as opposed to exercises written for beginners. I think that's why I like them so much because it still feels like you're playing proper music instead of like really long held notes or something :)

I started with these "Hören, Lesen, Spielen" books (it's German because I'm from Switzerland) and I remember that it had some melodies with a solo part. And that solo was just a empty part, so you could play what you want. I never played anything at those parts, because I was too shy and afraid to play something I made up. Then I started to cry😂 Now I think it's funny, because I like to play solo.

Have you heard of the "Master Theory" Series? I had those books in elementary school, and then I used them for a bit when I started teaching. Right now my students are using the "Essential Elements" series. It's okay, but not my favorite.

Then, when I was in 8th grade I started using the Rubank advanced method book 1.Also, I had a bunch of beginner pop flute books that my dad gave me. @@JustAnotherFlutist Okay, so best to get the Trevor Ye Beginner books initially...or what for the self taught? I would have a whole Library if I got the various different books people recommended on my Facebook flute forum. So far those are mostly 1. the flute book boot camp manual". 2. flute 101, 3. The beginner Wye books ( though I'm a little confused over what those are versus the practice books) 4. Eubanks 5. Flute for dummies. Any help so I'm not spending $200 willy-nilly on beginning flute books? Something that can teach somebody flute as if they are a "slow child". My used Pearl 500 cost me $300 as it is. (I know that's not much and it's a pretty basic flute, but for me it's a lot for something I'm just starting on).

I have the selected duets book because my old private lesson teacher in 6th grade wanted our group to get it But then we never used it so I cri everytiem. It was kind of a waste of money lol. I am an intermediate flute player I guess, my second year of playing flute. I have the first and second tradition of excellence books, and some other extremely skinny band music book, which was a waste of money because we only used it once lol. Then I have a red district method book from 6th grade, and a blue distric method book for this year in 7th grade. We hardly ever use them XD

If you take on new students for lessons, how do you introduce then into the flute? Like, do you know if there are exercises for beginners? I keep trying to find some but I can't find any good ones. I'm currently self taught cos I am not long after graduating high school. I'm on a music course for the next two years at a thing called tech (it's like college). I really want to go to uni but I'm taking time out to improve my other skills (vocal and clarinet) and even though I can't really afford a teacher I was wondering about how a beginner (6 months) could improve gradually. I know I need regular practice but I can't really tell how to know if I'm improving or what kind of exercises will benefit me the most such as clear tone and learning proper fingerings. I only have one flute book at the moment and since I love your videos I was just wondering what kind of things I can do to improve as a flutist and how to tell if I'm making any difference. I understand if you are very busy but any help you could give would be very much appreciated. Thank you very much for your time!

the quality of the video was fine! I started with the band book: standard of excellence or smth.

I currently use Rubank Elementary Method and also Selected Duets. I started to learn to play flute about a year ago, and I think those two books are very helpful. I also have the Trevor Wye Practice Book (The Omnibus Edition), but I think it's just too hard for my current level. 😀

Hey I love your videos and I have a couple questions for you! What exactly is a prodigy? And I'm in middle school and am thinking about going to music school, and need a piccolo however, I am not sure if I should get a professional piccolo or a cheap student piccolo. Thoughts?
