A quick tour of my first ham shack. It’s nothing fancy, and mostly resembles a field day setup, but it's working pretty well based on my needs and budget. We’ll look at each of the items in greater detail in upcoming videos.

This video is a time capsule that I genuinely appreciate. Your channel was my favorite find of 2022, and I have been inspired immensely by your content. I got my Amateur Extra license last year (nearly two years after getting my Technician's license), and I haven't done a fraction of the things that you did at this point of your journey. I will start vlogging my ham radio adventures in 2023, and will step up my game to enhance my ecomm capabilities moving forward. Thank you for putting this channel online, for your genuine desire to contribute to both the amateur radio and prepping communities, and for being an authentic KZbinr. 73, Bryan (K5WIX)

Thanks for putting this older video back on my radar. It's a great motivator to see how far I have progressed over the last couple of years as sometimes I feel like I am not getting much done and moving too slowly. I am humbled that you find the content useful. . Good luck with your vlog and journey next year!

Thank you and welcome to the channel! It may be time for an update video as a few things have changed. Although, it's still pretty much the same station I take in the field. Take car.

Subbed. Nice first shack, you have allot of good fundamentals. I’d think long and hard about that draws hat, reviews and opinions are pretty mixed. Keep up the good work 👍

Thank you! That's good to know about the draws hat. The Raspberry Pi in its current configuration is doing everything I need. I may just add a GPS USB dongle and called it a day.

The Tech Prepper I have a video on installing the GPS dongle if you’re interested. Checked out your solar panel video too, good stuff 👍

Morning, Tom. Good luck on your license. It's really easy to start small and build your shack and station capabilities over time. Enjoy the hobby.

Nice clean, uncluttered shack. First, last, any license class. I believe in the KISS principal. 73 F8WBD

Thanks! It’s been about a year since this was recorded and the shack still looks about the same-it’s a minimalist shack. 73

Thanks. It’s very much a minimalist shack as most of the gear goes with me on the trail.

You probably know by now, but you want to get your antenna higher than that, a half or quarter wave from the ground is ideal, but impractical for the lower bands like 160 and 80.

Thanks for contributing to the comments.Yes, you are absolutely right. We are very much limited by a lack of tall trees out here. However, I have incrediblesuccess week-to-week running my dipole for 80m, 60m and 40m in a NVIS configuration. I love the regional capabilities. 73

actually that 1st qso qsl card thing is pretty cool.. never seen one quite like that. i do send qsl cards for my own firsts or needs or etc.. but havent seen it done quite that way
@TheTechPrepper

That's great that you're keeping the QSL tradition alive. The ham that sent me that first card is actually now my Elmer. It's great learning from a ham with 40 years of experience. That wall is now wallpapered with cards. I'm thinking of doing a QSL event for the viewers on this channel. It will likely be next month and I'll announce an HF frequency in advance on 20 and 40m. Take care.

Nice military looking watch! What is it? Make/model? Thnx.

Thanks. It’s the Casio Pro Trek. It’s a great price for the features: compass; altimeter, barometer, thermometer, world clock (UTC), stop watch, alarm, and it’s solar powered. It’s really rugged, too. I’m really hard on this watch. Smart watches are not my thing, so just know, this thing has no Bluetooth and no way of interfacing with a phone.
I'm never satisfied with my ham radio shack setup
