BUT I did wind up doing a TON of things on this trip that I KNOW you guys will enjoy, so stay tuned, because the NEXT vlogs are gonna be SO WILD! Also, I have a HUGE announcement for you guys coming soon!

Since youi wondered about the Dom: "The history of the Hamburg DOM begins with a church: in the 11th century, they were used everywhere for a variety of purposes; after all, they were usually the largest buildings in the city. This is how it happened that, especially in bad weather and in winter, traders offered their goods in Hamburg's Mariendom. In addition, all sorts of funny characters performed their tricks there and tried to amuse the visitors. The archbishop at the time found this inappropriate and banned the hustle and bustle from the church, which caused protests among visitors. Archbishop Burchard had to allow the hustle and bustle again in 1337. The only requirement for their stay was (how could it be otherwise) that there had to be typical Hamburg bad weather - so not a difficult thing! It continued like this for several centuries until the cathedral was finally demolished in 1804. It wasn't until 90 years later that the showmen and sellers got a new place for their fun - the Heiligengeistfeld. By the way, its name comes from the “Hospital zum Heiligen Geist”, a monastery hospital in Hamburg that was built around 1497." King-sized beds are normally split in half due to men weighing more and their weight pushing one side of the mattress down. With split beds that doesn’t happen. Also, there`s a split blanket so that one doesn`t get to seize the whole blanket and the other not getting any.

Exactky, we have this for a similar reason. Some people like their mattress more soft and some harder. This way you can have both and also if your partner moves around alot at night you won't be as affected by it. The first part won't apply to hotels of course since both sides will be the same mattress.

@@Steven91637 Hamburg is larger than all of those cities and also the undisputed center of its metro area, leading to a lot of commuters going in and out. And its rail network is heavily centralized around the Hauptbahnhof - much more so than Berlin's, for example. Cologne and Munich also seem to rely more heavily on other rapid transit networks that use separate stations. Frankfurt's central station is actually #2 at almost 500k (as of 2019).

The differnt kind of architectures in a lot of parts of most german big cities are a result of WW II. Lots of houses were destroyed during the massive air raids and the gaps of the destroyed buildings were filled up with new ones while the ones which could be repaired remained.

As a German we often forget how good our quality of life really is. If you ever want to visit some of the smaller town near the Netherland border (Ostfriesland / East Frisia), I would love to show you around. It's about 2h by train from Hamburg. It's like Hamburg yet completely different.

@@heiliger-julius So many Ostfriesen here 😁 I'm not too far away from Emden, it's okay here, but frankly, for visitors and tourists, it's probably a nicer experience during the warmer season. For the colder season, I'd recommend the Harz region, with the many smaller and bigger, very charming Christmas markets (Goslar is extremely pretty and the market lasts all month), the old steam-powered train, the witch lore, mining history, and all that stuff. You'd just need a really good guide if it's a once-in-a-lifetime visit because one village might have a fairytale-like charm, and the next is closer to a ghost town. But I guess that's a problem with most interesting areas here in Germany that focus more on medium and smaller cities and villages instead of the big ones.

Being a Hamburg native and a pretty long time viewer, seeing this is awesome. A lot of the architecture is so diverse, because there have been several instances due to which big parts of the city had been destroyed (a giant fire, WW2 and so on). And the Dom actually used to have a cathedral and a market place, but because the cathedral was so old (13th century) and dilapidated, it was torn down 200 years ago and only the market stayed, which is now... this xD

The interesting mix of architektur is to some extend based on the fact that Hamburg was heavily destroyed in WWII. Best example is that fancy apartment building on the Heilig-Geist-Feld (the place where the Dom is), which is actually a giant shelter which protected residents of the city from air raids. On top, where they now built the apartments, there used to be four big anti-aircraft-guns. Your confusion about the different meanings of "Dom" was funny. There are some words in German with local different meanings! So if you find out what "Kiez" is in Hamburg, don't be surprised when you visit Berlin one day... 😂
@Toffifay
@Toffifay 11 ай бұрын
I think its not totally correct to call the "Bunker" a shelter. It was built as a war bunker in 1940 I believe. Same structure as the 4 bunkers in Berlin. In Berlin they tried to take the bunkers apart after the war. They are pretty much indistructable. As Hamburg was so severly bombed after the war and the resources for distructing the bunkers were missing, they turned the wilhelmsburg bunker into a energy tower and the one on heiligengeistfeld into a shelter. Today there are Clubs inside. And on top there are no apartments, they are constructing a hotel and a public park.

@@Toffifay Correction: The Bunker Feldstraße (Heiligengeistfeld) WAS an air raid shelter for 18,000 people with FLAK guns on top. During the bombing of Hamburg, Operation Gomorrha, up to 25,000 found shelter inside. It was never used as or "turned into" a shelter after the war, but it wasn't demolished because people lived there, with Hamburg having nearly no houses left standing after the war.

17:00 the name of the fun-fair in Hamburg derives from the fact, that the fun-fair was held around the Hamburg Dom (cathedral) originally - later it was moved to the place where it is held today. Hamburg had a Dom (cathedral) right in the city centre - next to St. Petri (you will see this church when you walk down the main shopping street (Mönckebergstraße)). The square in the south of St. Petri is still called "Domplatz". The Hamburg Dom was demolished in 1806 after it became more and more dilapidated... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Mary%27s_Cathedral,_Hamburg

Alternative transport to taxi while public transit is on strike (you were very unlucky to arrive on that day): Moia (there's an app), it's an electric van ride that stops at virtual "bus stops". There's also services like Miles (again, there's an app for that, not sure how open to tourists this it though) where you can just pick up a car with the app and use for a short while (it's a super convenient short term rental car service). Costs more than a bus/subway/rail ride, but less than a taxi.

OMG I loved to fly Business Class with AF this year so much (even though I had to save long for it as we already are a family of three). On our flight out of Hamburg our little daughter was brought away from us to the cockpit during boarding, then again we were allowed to visit the cockpit during the flight and then again after the flight we were allowed in the cockpit with our little daughter being allowed in the co pilot seat, playing with the joystick and wearing the captains cap. And after that we had the long haul flight with the "real" business class cabin and a great crew. Oh and I am very glad you enjoyed our hometown of Hamburg BTW!

That "expensive building" you`ve mentioned has been a bunker during the 2nd worldwar. My Grandma used to run into that bunker as a kid almost every night when Hamburg got bombed by the alliance. ; )

Hi James, it's great you are having a good time! If you can, you should also take a trip to a northsea island, maybe Borkum or Norderney, they are beautiful in the winter too. :)

So surreal to see you walking around my hometown and exploring all the places I see almost on a daily basis for the very first time. I was waiting for you to mention the stadium called "Millerntor" which you could see in the background of the Dom. It´s the stadium of the football club "FC St. Pauli" which I support my whole life. Maybe in the next video that I´m definitely looking forward to watch. Have a great day James!

That building at 14:20 is an old Flak-bunker. A bunker from ww2 where anti air guns have been up on. They are planting trees on it now.

Yepp. And the refurbishment of the thick rebar-reinforced concrete walls made the costs to change it into appartments overrun the cost estimate by a huge amount.

14:23 Building is the last anti-aircraft fortress left over from WW2. It houses mostly music studios and clubs. The structure on top was added just recently and isn‘t quite finished. Once completed, a roof-top forrest will be planted on it, that will be open to the public. But there won‘t be any apartments in it, just offices.

I hear from the audio that you got here right on time for the autumn storms, just like i predicted. There's your explanation on why it was so darn empty during the day. Those winds can get pretty bad and let the cold cut deep like a knife. Doesn't help that the bahn was on strike either xD

I love those coin machines. With my non-german wife I started traveling more in Europe and started collecting these coins. There are some that just give you a premade coin. Others give you the quality you put in.

5:07 I think it's because german guests like to have their "own" bed while being together. if one partner is a night mover the other would not wake up of constant bed movements. just a guess ps: and if one mattress is .. well... not usable anymore, it's cheaper to get one small than 1 king size

For the more modern Architecture: I think, that was because of WW2. Hamburg was a priority target at that time, because of it's industrial and harbor complex. And because the bombs ignited a firestorm, most of the infrastructure was destroyed beck then.

Hamburg in Winter is cool. Hamburg in Summer is hot. And I'm not talking about the weather, man. You'll need to come back to our nice town during Summer, when all of us come out of their cozy homes and life shifts to the Parks and public spaces. You are prepared properly now for the real thing, trust me bro. 😎

The German bed is divided into two parts. So that the mattress is individually adapted to the person. The same goes for the comforter. For the gap between the mattresses, we put a bridge wedge. This is called a “Besucher Ritze”. Then it feels like a huge surface.

The Expensive building next to the Dom is actually a old world war 2 bunker, 1 out of 3 original ones. They are transforming it to a green outdoorspace mixed with a hotel. The upper area used to be or still is a techno club, called the BUNKER.
