Here is what heard from my chosen sister's tribe (Native American). If the person in the cultural "dress" is respectful of it, the "culture" is offering and the experience can spread joy, knowledge and awareness it should not be considered appropriation. It's when it becomes a Halloween costume, a joke or used to convey hate is when it's awful. BUT people can generally be awful. How wonderful that the shop took the time to understand hair types for their clients and offer service to everyone. 💓 Have SOMUCHFUN!!!!

Exactly Otherwise it shouldn't matter . Consider the fact countries all over the world . Literally living of our black American culture. Daily , Hair , clothes the music and the dance . And when we tried to tell them how , yes or not to do it on or teach them the right way. They get upset. And trying to flipped the script on us. It's crazy others racist towards us Black people. Yet those people literally living of our culture. That we created for us . Because nobody wants us to be involved. Especially when some of us were mixed. Or raised in that culture. We told multiple what we're not just because we're black. Lol go figure.

Aww the guy at 17:56 next to the Japanese lady in the yellow shirt was so enthusiastic to see you all gliding by in kimono! The wave of acknowledgement and her smile was so kind. You can tell the Japanese loved seeing you all positively wearing their traditional dress. Its not an every day occurrence in Japan so I would definitely break my neck to stare/wave/smile at a group of black women in kimono in Japan lol. Glad you all were out there politely representing for the culture. This was fun to watch.

I had same experience. I had work over time to go to Japan and I wanted to wear a the Graduation kimono called Hakama because I had graduated the year before from University. The girl even braided my wig so it would match the hairstyle that goes with it and literally everyone was "wow" or "nice". Japanese are okay with you wearing the kimono as long as you wear it respectfully or with intention plus I even had a Japanese lady help fix my kimono. I have a Yukata and every time I wear people think I got it imported from Japan but I bought from a Japanese shop owner hear in Little Tokyo. Kimonos are kind of like cultural exchange and renting/buying them keeps it from dying out which was huge problem sense not a lot younger generation wear them. Majority of people who wear them are foreigners surprisingly. Anyways, Sundai you need to go when your back California next year to Anime Expo at least once with your sisters.

Asians in general are appreciative when you wear their cultural clothing or make an effort to try to understand their history better, mostly because they haven't been persecuted for it relentlessly in their home countries like say, Native Americans, so it's considered a compliment rather than appropriation. Not to mention you all looked absolutely stunning in the kimono, and the tour looked super fun, lots of great bucket list items like that rickshaw, woo!

You all look great in your kimonos. Kawaii. What a fun day for you all. It's great selecting a kimono/yukata. Mine is between the two as it's of a heavy silk-like fabric and heavier than a yukata type of fabric. I selected it in the summer of 2017 in Kyoto. I walked into Daimaru department store and the ladies wrapped me up. It was great although I didn't speak Japanese and they didn't speak English. After they were finished, not only did they clap, but other sales associates from other departments walked by and also loved the look. They commented, "Kawaii". I have worn it many times as I was also in Japan in 2018 and 2019. I have also worn it to some important occasions here at home. As for the footwear, I have to wear my own footwear as I wear a U.S. size 10.5-11/ euro size 41. I wish I had bought a clip-on bow, but I actually tie the bow myself. It takes time and a lot of patience. At my hotel, I would get up an hour early to start getting ready before going down to breakfast fully dressed. I didn't wear my kimono while walking around all day outside as it was too hot. I like to go to Japan and other parts of Asia during the hot months. But, I wore it inside a lot and loved wearing it. When I was in elementary school, back in the sixties, the Japanese mothers would wear actual kimonos (silk) to school events. My neighborhood was basically African American, Japanese, and White. We were exposed to Japanese culture, food, and Buddhist temple festivals at an early age. It was like living in two different worlds. I love different ethnic styles of clothing and have worn different styles from around the world for decades. I buy the different styles either while visiting the country or from different families who have done pop-up stores here in LA.for decades. I got my beautiful Bhutanese kira and toego a good 25 years ago here in L.A. from a Bhutanese family who would fly here annually with their traditional clothing and do a pop-up store. I also have plenty of West African batik clothing, bought both here and in Ghana and also some North African clothing bought both in Tunisia and Morocco in the early 80s. There is a lot of beautiful traditional clothing out there from around the world. Go to Nextshark dot com and type in, African Artist and Japanese Designer Create Stunning Kimonos by Mixing Cultures. This creation was done back in 2017. I started to have my regular dressmaker in Bangkok make me kimono-style wear out of African fabric, but instead I had her do cheongsam style dresses out of my Vlisco cotton African batik fabric. She's been sewing for me for two decades and knows what I like. Greetings from Los Angeles.

Hi Sundai! Wanted to let you know that you guys look amazing in kimono and please try it again. I’m Dutch and white, but I have 6 kimono ensembles that I regularly wear. They’re just so comfortable. I have asked the Japanese people in my area if what I did was okay because I was also afraid to offend people. Not a single Japanese person had something bad to say, and they were so happy that their kimono were worn again in a good way. I try to be mindful of the way they are worn and what style goes good with what, never ever will I wear one as a ‘costume’ because I love and respect the craftsmanship so much.

24:03 Cultural appropriation is only an African American thing. Most cultures around the world are happy and proud to see other people take a keen interest and participation in their culture. I'm Southern African and we are also happy when we see foreigners participate in our culture ❤❤❤ As a black aftican girl who travels alot, I've never been to a country where the locals didnt want me to take part in their culture. I've only seen black Americans do that.
@SundaiLove Жыл бұрын
Literally said “ it’s NOT cultural appropriation” 😑 and it’s NOT just an African American thing but ok
@BaDazai Жыл бұрын
@@SundaiLove ❤ Sorry, you might have misunderstood me. I didn't mean you called it cultural appropriation. I was talking about how you were worried the Japanese people would react negatively to you wearing a kimono as if you had done something wrong 23:54. Beacuse of this I was explaining how people around the world wouldn't think like that, you would be met with kindness like you explained at 24:03. I mentioned African Americans because they're the only exception I know of as they get mad when it comes to other people participating in their culture and they call it cultural appropriation. I've never seen other people, races or cultures do this and there's no need for you to worry of being percived negatively like you expected at 23:54. Be it Europe, Asia or Aftica, you will be positively recieved for participating in the locals culture 😊
@3DingDongs Жыл бұрын
@@BaDazaihey girl! i think you need to do more research on why Black people in the U.S. get “mad” at others appropriating their culture/customs…there’s a reason for it it’s not simply because they don’t want others to take part in it!
@BaDazai Жыл бұрын
@@3DingDongs ❤️ I'm sure there's a reason for it, I wasn't trying to put down or invalidate their reasoning for it. I was just pointing out a fact that African Americans are the only ones I've seen react negatively to outsiders taking part in their culture. There isn't a reason to feel worried about other people, races or cultures, apart from african americans, reacting negatively to taking part in their culture, especially Japanese people. They'd never react negatively towards anyone other than them wearing kimonos. I've been to many Asian, African and European countries, you can be at ease when taking part in the culture. But for African Americans, you have to be more thoughtful and generally refrain from taking part in their culture as they don't appreciate that and will get mad. There's nothing wrong with that either, it's their culture 🤗
@Giminy Жыл бұрын
@@BaDazai Who the hell are you to speak for Japanese people? You're not even Japanese. As someone who is ACTUALLY of Japanese heritage, many of us actually aren't keen seeing foreigners wearing our traditional garments because as Sundai has eloquently iterated, people wear them for the wrong reasons. Kimonos symbolizes our history and culture and are a remembrance of where we came from; where our ancestors came from. There are specific reasons to wear them. They're not just a fashion sense that you get to wear for internet clout. It's always the gaijin who think they are entitled to everything they see.
