You got the basics - Whichever team is holding the egg when the dragon hatches scores. They get extra points if they can coax it on to the perch at their end of the pitch.

Historic win for Italy Ash. Glad you enjoyed as someone who has been going for 35 years to international sports matches in Cardiff. The Oggie, Oggie, Oggie chant comes from Cornwall and made famous by Welsh comedian Max Boyce on records and TV during the 1970s and 1980s when going to rugby matches. Tip is too get food and beer 20 mins before kick off. Cardiff rugby next door is also a good vibe with cheaper tickets and Wales women also play rugby there . I would suggest Wales men's football/soccer at Cardiff City Stadium in June for Holland game or Wales women/soccer in Llanelli/Cardiff later this year. Both are excellent atmospheres as well with both doing well results wise last few years.

It came about due to the Cornish tin mines. t wasn’t until the 19th Century that the Cornish pasty that we all know and love first became recognisable to us. After the third mining boom in the 18th century, the Cornish mining industry was flourishing. Some of the areas, such as Gwennap and St Day, were among the richest in the world and, at its height, the tin mining industry in Cornwall owned around 600 steam engines. Men going into the mines needed a transportable, yet filling, lunch option that they could take with them. Known as the first convenience food, the filling would often consist of a potato and vegetable filling. The mixture placed in the middle of the pastry would be made very cheaply, but would be highly calorific to provide the miners with the energy that they needed to get through the day. Towards the start of the 20th Century, pasties were becoming widespread, produced on an industrial scale and an essential for families. Women cooking pasties would shout into the mines “Oggie, oggie, oggie”, receiving a reply of “oi, oi, oi” when the miners were ready to eat. It is because of this that the British traditional rhyme came about, which is still used today.

I'm English but hand on heart every time I hear a Welsh sporting crowd sing 'Land of My Fathers' or rather 'Mae Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau' I get goosebumps, tears in my eyes, a lump in my throat and a longing to be Welsh if only for a few minutes.

@@uktravel8341 I agree with this. It actually annoys me that the England football team uses God Save the Queen. That's the British anthem not the English one. It sends so many wrong messages. I went to the Commonwealth Games in Manchester and they used Jerusalem for England. Not perfect but better than God Save The Queen.

Hi Ashley, Glad you enjoyed your first Rugby International, As a man of Anglo-Irish descent I can wholeheartedly say the Welsh singing their national anthem in full voice is a sight/sound to withhold unmatched anywhere in the world, About 4 years ago Wales were playing Ireland I think in a World Cup Qualifier at the Cardiff City Stadium which has a capacity less than half of the one you were at, The volume & passion of that anthem brought goosebumps/chills & anyone with an ounce of Welshness in them would have been proud. Anyway all the best Jim, Surrey X

The Oggy Oggy Oggy chant (alternatively spelt Oggie Oggie Oggie), and its variations, are often heard at sporting events, political rallies and around numerous Scout and Guide campfires, primarily in Britain, Ireland and some Commonwealth nations. One group will shout Oggy three times, while another will respond with Oi! three times. Of Cornish origin, the chant appeared in British sports grounds in the 1960s and 1970s, namely rugby union and football. So its definitely Cornish and Ozies stole it from UK i guess :)😃

We attended a rugby match in Brisbane, Australia. We drove to a city parking lot and picked up a city bus which took us directly to the stadium. This was included in the price of your ticket! Very well organized and no hassles of parking! We didn't "pregame" (in the Midwest--we come from Big 10 schools and call it "tailgating") but we had a burger at the stadium. Stadium food is generally sub-par. I loved the game and had all sorts of questions for our friends, but I got shh-ed by several people in front of us. But we had a wonderful time! When our friends came to visit us in Detroit, we took them to a baseball and a football game. They knew about baseball but I had to explain football to them. Beers in the US are about $10 each, so we ate at a restaurant outside the park/stadium before. Have a great time in Wales, Ashley!

@@uktravel8341 The US networks determine how long the games are (this from someone who used to work for one) because they need to get in plenty of advertising time. So a game that would normally only last for a couple of hours turns into a full half day match with super long half time and lots of breaks during the game as well (NOT like rugby or football either in the UK or Ireland, or NZ or Aussie for that matter). And the game in Wales shown here also had RTE there (which is what we watched it on) so rugby isn't only dominated by the huge UK media companies.

English lyrics to the anthem Oh land of my fathers, O land of my love, Dear mother of minstrels who kindle and move, And hero on hero, who at honour’s proud call, For freedom their lifeblood let fall. Country! COUNTRY! O but my heart is with you! As long as the sea your bulwark shall be, To Cymru my heart shall be true. O land of the mountains, the bard’s paradise, Whose precipice, valleys are fair to my eyes, Green murmuring forest, far echoing flood Fire the fancy and quicken the blood For tho’ the fierce foeman has ravaged your realm, The old speech of Wales he cannot o’erwhelm, Our passionate poets to silence command, Or banish the harp from your strand.

The chant “Oggie Oggie Oggie” was 1st started by Max Boyce - a welsh comedian. The chant has been adopted & amended by numerous other clubs & countries but it originates in wales, or more accurately Max the Great. Actually wales was the 1st country to sing the National Anthem before a sporting event. Is happen at the turn of the last century when the All Blacks where performing the Hakka. In response the crowd spontaneously started to sing the Welsh National anthem which then became the norm before all national sporting in pretty much all countries

Oggy, Oggy...Oh,Oh. Was originally a Cornish miners chant. The 'Oggy' is a hard baked pasty (The Cornish pasty, that contains meats baked hard into pastry) . The wives would drop them down the mine shaft at lunch. They would shout a warning that the hard pasty was coming down "Oggy, Oggy, Oggy', the miners down shaft would reply 'Oh, Oh, Oh' to confirm they were clear of the shaft and wouldn't be hit on the head by the hard baked pasty!

An 80 minute game that's over in less than two hours, vs a 60 minute game that takes three and a half hours. (And don't get me started on the television commercials!) When I saw my first rugby match on television (after a lifetime of being subjected to NFL brainwashing) it was like a religious experience for me -- My reaction was "This is how God wants us to play football!!!" -- and my observation was confirmed when I found out Rugby is known as the game played in Heaven. One thing you might have noticed also is that there wasn't an abundance of obnoxious drunks spilling beer on people and trying to pick fights with fans of the other team in the parking lot. Instead, they probably went partying together after the match. Hopefully, you've become one of the Enlightened and will remain a die-hard fan for life. Even in America, there's probably a rugby club not too far away.

If you want time to snack and drink with long breaks, then go to a test cricket match. You can have five days of it if you wish. However, that's maybe taking it a bit far, so a Twenty20 game is the opposite, and lasts about 3 hours with lots of action, whilst a one day match is what it sounds like, and rather more leisurely. Then there is village green cricket which is even more so. Whilst Wales isn't prime cricket-playing territory, Glamorgan has a first class county cricket team. A one day or Twenty20 Glamorgan match might be interesting to attend, and you can snack all you like. Glamorgan play the great majority of their home games at the Sophia Gardens in Cardiff, so it would be convenient.

No we did not nick the Oggy song from Australia, but the Welsh nicked it off the south west of England ;-) Would be good if you could make the finals of the English Premiership at Twickenham, all the club supporters from different clubs go and have a great time.

A huge difference here is that this is the national team, so the national anthem is meaningful in a different way than the same process in the US where national teams are basically a non-factor.

The "oggy oggy oggy" chant comes from coal miners. Oggies are pasties, eaten by miners (coal / tin miners). Wales had a lot of coal miners back in the day.

Well done, glad you enjoyed yourself, which is what the whole day is about. I was lucky enough to have a welsh grandfather, with the matching thick welsh accent; he was a police sergeant and stood 6' 5" tall. He also said the welsh national anthem should be 'Bread of Heaven', who was going to argue with him? lol

They always used to sing that when I was following rugby many years back. I'm an English fan so don't expect me start saying nice things about the Welsh teams and supporters; too many heartbreaks in the past for that.

As a Scotsman my favourite two 6 nations away games are Paris and Cardiff, Cardiff is great for pre game drinks and of course St Marys street 1min from ground straight after, as we are staying in city hotels just get drunk and catch a mid day train back on Sunday..Only grievence with Cardiff is the hotel prices are hiked during match weekends... Paris also excellent French do a great national anthem, train is a fun crush post match back to Gare de Nord but plenty of bars there and just north to Moulin Rouge area 3 Irish pubs nearby.

At a Rugby match an Italian or English supporter could be in the middle of a bunch of Welsh or Irish supporters and thats just fine. Everyone just shouts and hollers and has a great time and then they all have a drink together afterwards. The reason US games (like NFL) are longer overall is because of the commercial aspect. US TV demands breaks every few minutes and so the games are stopped the game itself may be 80 minutes but it takes 3 hours. An NFL match even changes both sides when possession changes! At a rugby match the 15 players are on for the full 80 minutes (OK 2 40 minute halves and there are 5 substitutes) and so the game just flows. And its all over inside 2 hours.. In the USA its a stop / start thing which is pretty naff.

Much more action than in an American football game! American football is a 60 minute game with an hour and a half or two hours of breaks...

Football fans often refer to rugby as egg chasing. The origin of the oggy oggy oggy, is a welsh folk singer/comedian called Max Boyce, worth looking up some of his material.

Glad you enjoyed your first experience of rugby yes it’s short and sweet but as you said exciting always. An American football game is only one hour long but because it stops so frequently it can take three hours to complete. A rugby game is actually longer at 80 minutes but the longest it will ever take is probably 85 minutes with stoppages

Ash! The game of rugby 80min is longer than American football (60min) than Ice Hockey (60min) with only a 12min half time break between two 40min halves! North American sport is not designed for endurance, hence all the stoppages and Add breaks!

Football fans call Rugby players Egg chasers so you're was on the right path... And no the Aussies stole it off the English (cornish) but it was popularised by the Welsh Comedian/singer Max Boyce in the 1970's.... American football is only 60 minutes long but somehow you manage to spread it out over 4 or more hours!
