Hello Art Friends! I'm Anoosha Syed, a professional children's book illustrator and this October was a busy one! I visited LA again to exhibit at the LIGHTBOX EXPO 2022 artist alley, presented a talk for Procreate, had the opening night of my solo gallery show, and traveled to Austin for a school visit.

Amazing video as always, Anoosha. I love to see your process as an artist in terms of your picture book and illustration work, whereas these vlogs serve as a great insight into your life as a professional artist. Great editing as usual and thanks for being so candid. What I did miss was some details about the South Asian artist panel, sounds so interesting. As a brown person I really love to hear what other poc say about the industry and how it might have changed. If you have the time and opportunity I would love to hear your thoughts on this panel discussion. I'll also try finding a video of the panel on the Lightbox channel. Looking forward to your next video :)

This is all so cool! I also feel you with conventions its lovely when you have some help I usually do them alone or share a table with friends I always try to ask for friends to get sat next to each other but it doesn't happen too often.

Thank you!! Yeah I’ve always been thankful to have friends table next to me, but I’d only feel comfy asking them to look after my table for 5 mins for a quick bathroom break. No time for any panels or a full walk back then :(

Congrats on the solo show! Traditional art is still pretty intimidating to me but I’m working my way up there. The gallery show looked great. And thanks for the look inside of Lightbox, I still haven’t been to one but really really want to go one year. I’m just so happy you also buy way too much at art cons, cause I always feel like such a weirdo when I have some crazy haul and my friends have one or two prints😊

Hi Anoosha! Thank you for your channel! I learned a ton with getting my career started from you. I have mostly done self published books up until now and have my very first job with a traditional publisher right now. I did have a question for you. You mentioned in this video that you ordered a bunch of your books. I'm assuming wholesale so that you can actually make a profit off them. I wasn't aware that this is something you could do as an illustrator at a traditional publisher and was wondering how that process looks and if that is pretty standard for illustrators to order bulk copies at a reduced price? I would love to hear more how that works as I'm interested in expanding this year by trying to do shows and events as well. Thank you so much!

Yes! So as an illustrator you would receive a certain number of copies for free (make sure you include this in your contract) but you can buy book as well. Get in touch with the sales department (ask your team for the contact if u can’t find it) and you can order from there, let them know you are an illustrator to get it at a discount and sometimes free shipping. Some pubs will have no minimum quantity, other pubs might require a ‘box’ full.

Another question i'm sorry! Have you ever done some sort of school visit for thebooks you just illustrated? Do schools normally go for that/pay for that and how does that normally look different than an author visit?

Yes they do! I have fixed rates depending on how many ‘sessions’ and I work through the authors booking website (there might be an equivalent in your country) or have info on your website. I get approached by schools but you could contact them yourself too

Can I ask what color profile you use when you’re illustrating in Procreate? I have some teachers that say to never do final art in anything but Photoshop because you can’t go from procreate to print. They recommend doing sketches and things and then importing to photoshop for color. I don’t have photoshop and I can’t really afford it either.
