My First Space Marine - Trying to get a grip on Yellow - 40K Indomitus Imperial Fist Captain

Stepping out of my comfort zone & painting my first ever Space Marine. I decided, as I so often preach, to paint something different and new to me. This is a mini I have never painted before and yellow is a colour that I often disregard - a learning experience. I really tried to do this miniature justice by giving it my best.
For those of you that are new to this channel.. welcome! And please, if you are after a straight forward A - Z tutorial of how to paint Imperial Fist's... well.. there is quite a lot of that around, so this one is a bit different. That said, there is a lot of tips and tricks here as well. If you have the patients. Stay Safe!

A special thanks to Alpha Spel - my local friendly game store - for letting me film in their shop. Don't forget to support your local game store folks.

Turquoise contrast with HIS yellow because he dis an orangish yellow and while the yellow complementary color is purple, the complementary color of orand is blue and turquoise has the green that contains yellow AND THE BLUE that is in green also and is also added to green (blue+yellow and blue + blue to have equal green and blue so like having 3 parts of blue and 1 part of yellow). So orange having blue as a complamentary color here we have a bluwish green which (if its exactly between blue and green) is 3x blue which is complementary of orange and 1x yellow which us the color of the armure a orange yellow so you have nearly complementary (yellowish orange complentary would be bluish purple, here we have bluish green) and the.liitle.bit.of yellow that diminish the contrast.

0:40 I'm so glad I'm not the only one who shaves that edge down. 👍👍 Edit: you really have no idea how privileged you are to just be able to go to a shop that has a display of indomitus like that. Really. I'm privileged too, in that I can enjoy your videos, I'm sure there are some who cannot even do that. For that I am grateful. Thank you. Oh! Edit2: prime/base coat pink to make your yellow. Goobertown Hobbies has a great vid about it.

Those edges round the base is devils spawn and should be shaved back to whatever level of hell they came from... I really don't like them :) And yes, the local shop is a wonderful place. I'm not visiting as often as I would like, times being as they are.. but places like this should be well looked after. Thank you for the tip on the yellow, I can see that a lot of people are working hard to get good yellow space dudes going.

@@52Miniatures None are to the standard of yours. Though it's nice to see you use a similar technique. I undercoat orange, then a few zenthinal spray of yellow. Then a heavy brown (oil based) wash over over, before a hour or two removing the wash with a cotton bud and white spirit, till I'm happy with the result. Even better is that it works (I think) for individual men and tanks (my Spartan is painted with the same method as my marines).

well the "receits"are called purity seals are used as a mark of honour and experience, it used to be in the 30th millenium that if you came back with it intact it meant you were a veteran and elite soldier since you were able to keep a piece of paper from being torn off in the middle of a battle, in the 41st millenium its like a mark of purity and a way to show the emperor's guidance and protection so usually the veterans and higher ranking marines get them and they can also be given as a representation of an amazing feat in combat

@@onyxtheemeraldknight8429 well the purity seals aren't only for space marines, anyone that does good enough can receive one, sisters of battle usually have them, but yeah, space marine lore is pretty interesting, like the one faction inside the custodes that has some sort of premonition ability, so they go and protect seemingly unimportant people knowing they will do a great deed or become an important figure in the future

To be honest, that is a rather spectacular paint job on the marine thingie. Agreed yellow is rather difficult to paint even when it’s on a flat surface with no shading or highlights! Oils are a great addition to the painting arsenal, agreed the extra step can be a question of ‘should I bother’ but once started it gives a life to the paint that washes and glazes can’t. Really enjoyed this vid, off to watch another of yours!

When we start painting, minis or something else, drawing etc we learn that darkening a color is not necerraly adding black like orange can be darkenend with red , redish brown, dark red, etc the green can be darkend with dark blue but as you learn and apply the rules (espacialy if you want to get out of your confort zone and if you like to learn, as you said), you learn that after the 1st step of acknoledging the rules and master them, the second step is to break the rules, as we usualy ear, first know and master the rules then break the rules. The idea is to master principles, rules, laws and even exagerating them like having a green that have dark blue shadow and yellow highlights and doing it different way like having it maybe very progressive or not at all, you can have your green that has a big range of color like going from a very dark blue to a less darker turquoise, to a "normal" green to a yellowish green to a yellowish white. Practice and explore, this is what going out of your confort zone is and exploring means also trying to break a bit the rules like darkennink your yellow with black instead of going for RED OR GREEN, like the 2 directions, ideas that arent just darkenning with black.. you can go browinish orange which I considere being the red direction because orange is putting red into the yellow. But did you explore ? Did you try to break this yellow darkenning "rule" of going to orange red or green ? Did you try to darken it with black ? Did you already mixed yellow with black ? Who in the comment already tried to mix yellow and black ? If you tried it say it as an answer under my comment and tell me what kind of color did you obtain, before continuing reading my comment. You xan just say "yes I tried the mix before" or "you gave me the idea and I decide to test it" and then "I obtained a .. ... ... color" Ok now if you are reading this, I am assuming that you already gave tested the yellow and black mix, almost once in your life. The color that you obtain was certanly a kind of camo/olive green which btw I call false green because there is no blue, its black instead, black and yellow. Now, from here you can considere a third path for darkenning yellow, you can go in the hot with red, orange, brownish red or orange etc, you can go in the cold direction with blue so you have a greenish color, green being yellow and blue. And now, instead of having only the hot with red or cold with blue, you dont need to be afraid of black and can do it other ways with the third path :camo green, olive green which as I said arent green its a third path and to darkent even more mixe the camo/olive "green" to black and/or use black ink and in the other way, to lightening, mix the camo/olive "green" with yellow. You'll be impress by the result it gives, I personnaly love it, much more than going into the otanges or the greens.

I think you will find that I pretty much experiment in every video published. This for example being my first “yellow space marine”. I present in the video, that I want to go for one with red / orange shading. And I experimented my way there. I appreciate your comment. But this was about me going for a specific space marine look. And sure, I can mix yellow with black. But it was not really the look I wanted for this :)

@@52Miniatures And I watched this video again. Your videos are wonderful; I appreciate your good humor and humility while reflecting what you learn. (I still hate yellow though - It always looks much too chalky. I need to try that oil technique!)

use a palette knife to mix oil paints, get a cleaner consistent paint. Also it won't ruin your brushes :) Wipe it clean with kitchen roll.

@9:04 I would agree that the sword did perhaps have an air of 'incredibly talented 5 year old' about it but in the finished shots I think that 'swirling vortex' would describe it quite aptly! Very inspiring :)

Thank you M! I was feeling real shaky there. I try and practice freehand, but it scares me. I'm real impressed with people that can draw like.. really draw stuff. But my drawing skills are limited to semi straight lines... so I try and just do that for freehand.
