S tier video. Strongly recommend you build on this 20-minute-ish, minimal-spoiler review for other campaigns. You could also have full spoiler campaign reviews, say 30-40 minutes, as part of the same video for that campaign or as a separate video series. I think the community would be interested in more of these kinds of videos. Thanks!

This was a great review. As a new player I'd love to hear your thoughts on the other campaigns. I only have Carcosa and I'm about to finish my first run through. I'll replay it a few times but I'm still undecided where my investigators will find themselves when I'm ready to try something new. I know other content creators have campaign ranking videos and reviews but I often find they are too long or too concise, this format was just right.

This is definetely the campaign with the highest variability leading to on of the highest replayabilities. 1. You play 6 of 8 scenarios, so every playthrough can have a different mix. 2. The scenarios differ on what day (1,2,3) you play them AND if you play them on daytime or nighttime. 3. By focussing on different citizens, you will get different storylines and some scenarios will be slightly different. One scenario (no spoiler) even offers two very different (almost opposing) approches. As far as I see, this is also one of the campaigns with the most diverse skill check concerning the treachery decks. Most campaign have a slight focus on Willpower checks (especially Carcosa) which is not the case in Feast of Hemlock. So you dont need that high brain Mystic to master the mythos phase.

Re: 8:45 "their stories continue without you" - there are plusses and minuses to this approach. On the one hand, the NPCs had storylines. On the other, the players have zero agency over what happens, instead deferring to Dr. Mary Sue getting to do everything and us just following along.

I know most people recommend dunwich or caracosa bc they have good players cards to add, would it be too hard to start hemlock with just the core set?

I think it'd be really tough without another box of player cards, sadly. You could also do well with any of the investigator starter decks (Harvey, Winifred, etc.)

No different than the standard campaign. We played through a scenario in about 2 hours or so. The preludes will take you about 20 minutes, plus some time to set them up and take them down. There is story text but nowhere near TSK, and it is much more interactive.

I think you are wrong by stating there are no investigators which shine in this campaign. With so much Parley actions especially during the Preludes, this campaign is definetely made for Alessandra Zorzi. Unfortunately, you havent played her in your first playthrough, else you might have said something else. ;-) Example. With two investigators the preludes have 4 turns. Most investigators have their 3 actions per turn. Alessandra gets a free Parley action per turn. It's easy to use that action in every turn of the Preludes. So with two investigators, you have 4x4 (Alessandra) + 4x3 = 28 actions instead of 4x3 + 4x3 = 24. That additional 4 actions make it easy (with some planning) to be able to read ALL chronic entries which does lead to slightly more XP and slightly more points on the relationship level of some citizens. And with Fine Clothes in play you will easily pass all Parley tests, while the other investigators can do the Parley actions that just cost ressources, cards and extra action. Also note that in some scenarios, some of the citizens join you and their are chronic entries which mostly are based on Parleying with those cards.
@Quick_LearnerАй бұрын
Having now played her in the campaign, I can say that she's good, but not cracked. The thing about the residents is overstated. While you probably can talk to an extra resident each prelude, you're limited by the evening interludes for whether or not this really matters later, and you're gated here by player count. On four player, I can see her pushing your ability to follow 4 storylines easily, but at 2 and 3 (when I've tried her now), it didn't make any difference.
@andrethannhauser6302Ай бұрын
@@Quick_Learner I dont think you can follow more than 2-3 storylines at all. I was able to read EVERY codex entry in the first two day preludes. Being able to increase the relationship only works on the first prelude. On the second it's already limited by the scenarios you played. That means on the second prelude you will mostly only be able to increase the relationship of the people whose relevant scenarios you have played resp who already have an entry. After 4 scenarios I have only written down six notes on the citizen sheet. One citizen is at level 4 and one is at level 3, the rest is lower. If you combine perfectly you might be able to have two citizens at level 3 which then accept to dance on the 2nd night which brings them to level 4. This deverses extrem focus. That being said, the campaign seems to be designed to only have so few citizens at a high level....and if you spread in a wrong way you might end up with none being your "friend". BUT, with Alessandra you are able to prevent going on a scenario which favors a citizen you havent spoken to because you easily manage to speak to all of them. So while she might not be able to achieve MORE than other investigators, she at least enables you NOT to miss something just because your conversations + scenario picks don't match...no matter if by random bad luck or by bad deduction of what the citizens told you. And still the decision which scenarios you play can depend on different premises like: - what you personally find most interesting - what the investigator concerning their jobs/roles would prefer (so you base it on good roleplaying) (e.g. playing Alessandra and Hank I'm not so much interested in the "science way" (flora and fauna) but the things that happen in the villages on the isle and the struggles of the citizens) - what citizens you like best concerning their behavious (good guys, bad guys) - you just check what citizens have the best effects concerning your characters So there is a dilemma if you go the roleplaying-way or the high-competitive/economy way. I mostly play on easy mode because I go the roleplaying way, not focussing of having all the S-tier and A-tier cards in my decks but also having some cards that fit to the role and background of the investigators....and taking no cards that themewise dont fit at all.

I think it’s a bit of a bummer that you don't play 8 scenarios on the campaign, I like the idea of making things open and more variable, but I don't like the idea of achieving that by making campaigns less than 8 scenarios.
@Quick_Learner9 ай бұрын
Yeah, I'm wondering if they couldn't come up with enough story to make it into 4 days. I do like 8 scenario campaigns, but I know some prefer a shorter one. I do like the "timer" here way better than TSK, which felt a bit artificial. Here I think missing out on a few scenarios fits into the story way, way better.
@DakonBlackblade29 ай бұрын
@@Quick_Learner The thing is, with less than 8 you don't get to customize your deck as much (which I really like to do). Also, it feels a little bit like they are cheating, they go “look how much choice you have, you finished the campaign and didn’t even play these two scenarios, you can play again to experience them now” and you go “ye but that’s cause the campaign finished before I had the opportunity to play them, it’s still 8 scenarios in the box”. Maybe they could’ve included a mandatory initial scenario and a mandatory final one to complete 8, I dunno. Anyway, I'm sure I'm gonna enjoy this campaign but I'd prefer if the future ones can find a way to incorporate the openness and keep the 8 scenarios.

This has quickly become my least favorite campaign. I've not completed it yet, but what I've done so far has been... sub-par. Amazingly, it hasn't been the scenarios. Those have been fun. It's been everything else. The preludes are awful. Ugh. Those alone will make me not want to replay the campaign. This substantially lowers the replayability value, probably more than Dream-Eaters. (I really don't want to create two decks only to play them for 4 scenarios each.) The editing. The editing is so incredibly awful. They are breaking language rules and it just drives me batty. The writing. This is a double-whammy. Duke is a good writer, but this campaign was always going to be compared to MJ. It's not fair to Duke but MJ was a fantastic writer. Duke is good but MJ is excellent. She's just so evocative with her descriptions and Duke falls short. But, more importantly, Duke's writing breaks immersion. He throws in a *lot* of pop culture references that just immediately break my immersion when they appear. Do we really need to hear more Jaws quotes? Jaws?! Seriously?
@andrethannhauser6302Ай бұрын
To me it's quite the opposite. The setting, the structure and the variability is huuuge. I directly made me want to watch the movies Annihilation and The Colour from outa space. That mutating flora and fauna plus people becoming mad is awesome. I'm 4 scenarios in and this has potential to become my favorite campaign. Also, in Hemlock you do NOT have different decks. The preludes enable you to dive deeper into the story without just reading texts while at the same time simulating something that is much more than just a mulligan. The lower the player count the better the investigators will start the next scenario compared to a simple mulligan. I play with two investigators, and I easily managed to circulate much more than 10 cards, have an important asset in play and have all investigators have 5 ressources to begin with. Schoffner's Catalogue is my S-tier card for the preludes so far.
