The entire Aja album is a masterpiece. The extended length title track stands alone as a unique expertly cradted blend of rock, jazz, and R&B styling. The grear Wayne Shorter plays two sax solos, while drummer Steve Gadd plays along right behind him with the most amazing drum fills and counterpoint.

I’ve been a SD fan for 45 years but, not being American, I didn’t get a lot of these kind of references. So now I know black cow is a really awful concoction of ingredients meant to be drank, for pleasure??? Knowing that, It’s still my least favourite SD song even though the album is great. I need to check out this guy when he listens to almost anything else by SD, especially stuff that is really funky and soulful unlike this track. I think he will be delighted.

"AJA" was album of the year when it was released in 77. Many of the tunes were played on the radio along with tunes from all their other albums. PS: It is important to dissect the lyrics. The songs may sound happy and sweet, but the words are often of underworld, nefarious subjects. Also a bit cryptic where some words have alternate meanings.

Nice Christmas present. I am glad you liked this. You are right, it was 1977. Steely Dan is their own musical genre. Elements of jazz/funk/blues/rock/r&b/soul, etc. SD is one of the most revered bands in history. Total perfection in the studio and they only used the best musicians on a rotating basis for each album and many times for each song in an album. Tough to tell you where to start with them. Many fans feel that the album Aja is their best. Black Cow is from that album. The song Aja is looked at, by many fans as their best but an argument can be made for so many others. The album The Royal Scam is brilliant too. Try Aja next for a completely different feel from Black Cow. Thank you for reacting to this. 👏🙏🔥 Courtesy of Wikipedia. The personnel on this song is like a who’s who of greatness: Black Cow" Donald Fagen - lead vocals, synthesizer Paul Humphrey - drums Chuck Rainey - bass guitar Victor Feldman - Fender Rhodes Joe Sample - clavinet Larry Carlton - guitar Tom Scott - tenor saxophone Clydie King, Sherlie Matthews, Venetta Fields, Rebecca Louis - backing vocals

Full disclosure . . . I am an old, White, music geek. I hope that won't discount what I am about to say. I was lucky in that, I was raised listening to all kinds of music, big band, Jazz, classical, country, rock and classic "soul" music. I also had the experience of seeing many of the greats (jazz, rock, soul and classical) artists in concert, including Steely Dan! The young reactors I watch on YT seemed to have been raised in a musical environment of mainly hip-hop and rap where melody and chord progressions have been consciously eliminated to emphasize rhythm and lyrics. I notice however, when these young people hear Steely Dan, Luciano Pavarotti, Bohemian Rhapsody, etc., they always seem excited and love the experience, even if they cannot express why. My free advice (and worth every penny), is ask your mom and dad, uncles and aunts, older family friends, what music they listened to growing up. And then go listen to it. It will lead you down interesting, unexpected, enjoyable musical paths. Best regards.

I hope by now you've heard the full Aja album!! It's a masterpiece of jazz rock, funk and pop. Not only one of the best albums of the 70s, one of the best records ever. Fagen and Becker used some of the best jazz musicians of the era. Wayne Shorter, Larry Carlton, Steve Gadd, Tom Scott, etc. They are completely unique in sound although closest to bands with horns like EWF as you mentioned, a bit of early Chicago. Maybe some Weather Report. Their music influences are rooted in jazz, Miles Davis, Sonny Rollins, Wayne Shorter, Dave Brubeck. Yet they write catchy pop rock songs, and write obtuse, witty and sarcastic lyrics under the smooth glossy sheen of their music. Simply one of the best bands ever!! PS, the song FM (No Static at All) was recorded shortly after the Aja album with many of the same session musicians. It was specifically written for the movie FM, but would have fit right in on the Aja album. Great catchy funk rock, also sampled a bit too.

Gotta do "My Old School" by Steely Dan ... Walter Becker and Donald Fagan had a ridiculous recipe for writing, arranging, and producing great music with a rotating case of musicians that are second to none ...

Steely Dan had a very diverse catalog....kind of a rock/jazzy fusion. My personal favorites are Reeling in the Years, Bohdisattva, Deacon Blues and Hey 19.

groups like Steely Dan , ELP, early Genesis , Yes and others were great , creative musicians able to entertain well individually so when introduced to new material by a band member they would ask the other members to create an enhancement for the works. thanks for reacting to the music of my youth

Steely Dan's "time" started in the 70s, but as the coolest cool jazz, their time continues...they are timeless. :)

They spanned from the 70s to now. Sooo much to discover. Black Cow is one of my faves. Check Babylon Sisters, Deacon Blues, FM, Josie, The Fez

The thing about Steely Dan thats amazing is they hired multiple musicians and recorded over and over based on their blueprints, whatever lineup of musicians did the best stuff went on the albums.
