If you just found the Moody Blues get ready for a great education in life. Beatles and Moody Blues were blowing peoples heads off with info. Glad you found them.

Very haunting gut wrenching song for those that understand the lyrics he is expressing. "Nights in white satin never reaching the end" is reference to the satin sheets she bought him just before she broke it off. "Letters I have written never meaning to send" With 20 versions sitting in the trash he never mails his letter to try and gain her back. Why? "Just what the truth is I can't say anymore" Did she ever really love him? "Gazing at people some hand in hand" seeing others in love only brings back the pain. "Just what I'm going through you can't understand" Unless you have had a broken heart you can't understand. I cry every time I hear this song. I wonder where she is how she is doing. Damn this song all to hell its so beautifully written yet so haunting.

And if you enjoy some flute music in your rock and roll let me recommend "Can You See" by the Marshall Tucker Band and a live performance from the late 1970's of the band Jethro Tull performing "Locomotive Breath"!! And the music of 50 years ago was shit compared to that which was 50 years before it, right? Or perhaps your understanding of and appreciation for music is too limited. If you can't find music today that you can appreciate, even love, it isn't the fault of the music.
@CrustyCurmudgeon
@CrustyCurmudgeon 3 жыл бұрын
@@sbearly Actually, if you take into account the technical skill required and displayed, the musical acumen, and the overall popularity, then your first statement is almost right. The big band era was the only time in the last century where the most popular music had the most talented musicians playing the most challenging music. And surprise; I love that stuff. My guess is that you weren't around for the 60's & 70's, hence your statement. Its a matter of degree. Anyone who thinks there's as much quality music today as in the past probably didn't experience the past.

@@CrustyCurmudgeon I'm 72 so I know all that music. Some of the artists are still around and some of those still worth seeing. My wife and I can't wait to get back to seeing live music now. But there are a great many artists who have presented their music on KZbin during the lockdowns. It does defy logic though to think that artists living in one or more specific decades were magically better musicians or song writers than those living in other decades. Genres change of course and we may not like the music that seems to be currently popular, but we live in a glorious time where we can hear any type of music from any genre, any country, from a wide range of talented artists. It's all out there if we look for it. And live music is better of course.

If you love this song, you will love the entire album it’s absolutely incredible. As someone else said here, there were many bands during the 60s and 70s that were equally as talented, and of course the orchestra just adds another dimension to the songs. This is the music we grew up with. I am a singer, songwriter, recording artist, and when I write my own music, I can’t help but to add many parts to my songs, because this is what I believed music should sound like. 😅

This is my mother’s fav song by The Moody Blues. We’ve seen them live twice together. Ray Thomas was the flautist, and he died in 2018, at the age of 76. He was one of the founding members of The Moody Blues in the mid-1960’s. Earlier this year I was present for the death of my 90yo mother-in-law, who has been my other mother. My own mother will be 87 next month. She will be one who will most likely be alone when her day comes, because they are such different individuals. I’ve long wanted to sing this for my mum, as my eulogy for her, at her burial, because it represents her in so many ways. Don’t know if I could make it through it, and now that you’ve heard it, you can probably understand why I probably couldn’t do it. I appreciate this this is the song that introduced you to such a great band. 🖤🤎🧡🤎🖤

This is the Albert Hall performance, and I thought it had the ending. Maybe not. At least not on this video.

Breathe deep the gathering gloom Watch lights fade from every room Bedsitter people look back & lament Another day's useless energy spent Impassioned lovers wrestle as one Lonely man cries for love & has none New mother picks up & suckles her son Senior citizens wish they were young Cold-hearted orb that rules the night Removes the colours from our sight Red is grey and yellow, white But we decide which is right And which is an illusion

I saw the Moody's back in the day, 5 decades ago... Still pretty good! Thanks for another "timeless" reaction.

Glad you enjoyed listening to the Moody Blues. The first time I heard the album, in 1972 during Vietnam, at the finale, it was like I was entering, "into the Kingdom."

TIMELESS!! Yes, exactly, good word choice, the music speaks for itself. The singer is Justin Hayward, love the vocals, the band is amazing

When I saw them at amphitheater near Kansas City in the 80s. A storm was swirling, lightning in the distance. Graeme Edge let the wind blow the flute while he played the solo. Magical! 💖 I used to fantasize plotting meeting Justin Hayward (lead singer). Still in love with him 💖
