Merry Clayton got a late call from a Producer one night in 1969 hoping that she would sing on this track. Still in her pyjamas, hair in rollers and four months pregnant, she arrived at the studio, cementing her place in rock history with the “it’s just a shot away” vocal line. She said "I was tired, it was cold and my voice cracked. We listened back and they said: ‘Oh that’s bloody fabulous. Can you do it again?’”

On point Paul. Only other people on the recording are, Nicky Hopkins played piano, Jimmy Miller played percussion. Have you ever noticed that Mick Jagger and Tina Turner are both high energy and have very similar moves? That's because Tina worked with Jagger on his stage presence and how to dance. Mick was also influenced by James Brown and Mick's mother.

You forgot Brian Jones who was the group's founder, Mick Taylor who replaced him and Ron Wood who in turn replaced him. Jones and Taylor in particular were incredibly important in influencing the band's sound during their respective tenures. Never forget that.

Mick Jagger was just 26 when he wrote this. The lead guitar was Keith Richards, aged 25. The female vocalist was Merry Clayton, a 20 year old session musician called in late at night. She turned up with her hair in curlers and this is what she produced! The song was the first track on the 1969 album, Let it Bleed. Our generation just needs to hear the first chord of the opening rif to know what's coming. An all time classic from 55 years ago that's as relevant today as it was then!

Original 2nd guitarist Brian Jones left the band before this record and passed away in 1969 after drowning in his own pool. Mick Taylor (guitar) replaced him until 1974, but he wasn't featured on this track... Keith Richards is credited w/ the guitars on this track. The female vocals were performed by Merry Clayton, an American singer. The Rolling Stones usually perform it live in concert w/ a guest singer.. Ronnie Wood (guitar) has been part of the Rolling Stones since 1975 and is featured on the live versions since.

Understated. IMO, they are the single greatest rock and rock band of all time. The quality and volume of classics is enormous. This doesn't mean that there aren't other truly great rock bands, LZ, The Who, Pink Floyd, and even Metallica. But The Stones are the standard.

They are now been going 60 years. They have a spanking brand new album out next week (20th October) called Hackney Diamonds. They have already released two songs off it in a matter of weeks. First one called Angry and Second single Sweet Sounds of Heaven with Lady Gaga backing vocals and Stevie Wonders on Piano. The album has ben given great reviews one critic said best album in 40 years! Mick Jagger (singer) 80 years old, Keith Richards (Bassist) 79 years old, Ronnie Wood (electric guitar) 76 years old. In the late 50's/ early 60's, there was a cultural shock that rock n' roll music brought to the shores of the UK and Europe... American music by black artists included the blues, jazz, R&B, gospel and rock n' roll... and the British kids who were raised on their parents' music suddenly got a whole new world of music to listen to... Elvis, Buddy Holly, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Ricky Nelson were the white artists that owed their careers and legacies to black artists like Little Richard, Chuck Berry, Muddy Waters and Robert Johnson. Rock n' roll music was aiming to break down the ethnic barriers between European white and African black people... It was a music form that was literally called a 'threat' by the authorities... The Beatles were banned in the USSR in the 60's. Rock n' roll records were illegal in communist countries and punishable by jail if caught w/ them. But bands like The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Who, The Kinks... they all loved American music and wanted to make their own. When The Beatles came to America, they refused to play to segregated audiences - they demanded and supported integration in the civil rights era. The Rolling Stones did the same when they came to America; they had opened for black American artists in the UK whom they idolized. In the UK, the BBC were the broadcasters of media and music, and they would not promote bands like The Beatles or The Rolling Stones... So, pirate radio stations would broadcast from offshore ships and play their record so that the British public could hear the music without censorship or interference. We owe the 60's artists a gratitude of thanks for helping break down the walls between 'white' and 'black' music... It certainly helped to bolster the civil rights movement and gain support for equality of people in the USA.

The Rolling Stones came onto the scene shortly after the Beatles blew up and took over the world. The Beatles were an entity onto themselves (and are still the biggest selling musical artists of all time), but the Rolling Stones were the next up to carry the torch for the British Invasion that occurred in popular music at the time. I highly recommend for your next Rolling Stones reaction, checking out the studio recording of the Rolling Stones song "Sympathy for the Devil". The greatness of British Rock bands like The Stones.. is that they took the art-form but did not forget its roots... This song has so much soulfulness in its rhythms and tones even down to the way Jagger sang it.. and the fact that they collaborated with African-American vocalist (Merry Clayton) elevated this song to unmatched heights... This is 1969 when (probably) white American artists did not make such choices... Also yes the vocals had to have power but the pain in Clayton's voice is what makes it special..it was NOT about Vietnam for her

They are great Live! A little fact ...Mick Jagger Sang on " State Of Shock " with Michael Jackson . Freddie Mercury was the original singer to accompany Michael, but it never got finished. There is a demo version of " State Of Shock " on KZbin with Freddie and Michael singing.

So Mia, fun fact, Merry Clayton did the background on the original album. The Stones were in the US and needed a black background singer to give them the seasoning for this song. She showed up to the studio late at night around 2 am in pajamas and curlers. She knocked it out of the park. On their Live tour, Grammy award winner Lisa Fischer, sang the backup for them including this song. IMHO Lisa Fischer can hit the high notes better than Mariah Carey. She ranks up high as one of the best female vocalists despite having a short solo career. She preferred to sing backup and owned that space for over 30 years. You must react to her singing How can I Ease the pain live in Japan. An epic vocal performance. Also, watch 20 Feet From Stardom" a documentary on predominantly black backup singers that helped add the flavor to Rock songs, especially coming out of England. The English rock bands were influenced by blues but could not get the sound right without the black backup singers. Lisa and Merry are the big stars in this documentary. This song, in style stands apart from other songs in the Rolling Stones' extensive song catalogue, and is my favorite. The guest vocalist Merry Clayton is extraordinary. The second time she sings "rape murder" and her voice cracks you can hear Mick Jagger say; "Yeah!" One of the greatest rock vocal performances of all time imo. But, there was a sad back story to this song for Clayton. I believe that most of this song (if not entirely) was written by Keith Richards.
