I started skating at 3 years old. Skate enough and the blades become an extension of your feet so you’re “on your feet” like you were saying about wanting to be in sports. Yes the game is very fast and intense and dangerous but the danger is cut down a little bit by the big enforcers. The players police their own behavior and if someone breaks any unspoken rules or hits someone he’s not supposed to hit, the enforcers will exact retribution and the scales will be balanced again.

I’ve been knocked unconscious by 4 blindside checks in my hockey career, and gotten my face stitched up several times. One thing about getting hit is it really tires you out. It takes a lot out of you to take a big hit.

In the NHL all teams have four lines of forwards and 3 lines of defence. They switch out throughout the game. There are 6 total positions in hockey, and although none of them are specific to making big hits, that is the point of the fourth line. They are often grinders who will fight and make big hits but are much less skilled with the puck

Ice Hockey, this modern version, and Basketball, Baseball and Football were all invented by Canadians. As a Canadian, who grew up playing hockey and as a proud fan, you are welcome! and you can have basketball! This rough style of hockey is Canadian Hockey. It is the reason why Canada is the dominate hockey nation in the world - more than twice as many intetnational wins/medals than the next closest country - Russia. Thankfully, some US players and leagues have adopted the Canadian style of hockey and avoid the European Style of hockey. The NHL was a Canadian league that expanded into the USA. Historically, most NHL players are Canadian, but that has dropped from almost 100% down to 50% today. Even hockey teams in the USA are half Canadian players or more. Hockey pucks are vulcanized rubber that are frozen for game use, reduces bouncing of puck. Pucks are shot at average speeds of 88 mph up to about 110 mph. The glass is 1/2 inch thick safety glass. The boards, can move a little, but are not padded and are boards, hard. Body and Hip checks are legal providing 1) the head is not the initial point of contact 2) you can't your elbow or knee, 3) you don't hit people from behind, on the numbers on back of jersey and 4) hip checks must be above the knee. Hockey players move at speeds of up to 28 mph and collisions between two players can occur at over 50 mph. Even though hockey players are app 20% smaller than NFL players, NHL Hockey hits are known to be over 20% harder than NFL or rugby. Then they land on ice or are smashed into boards - lol can't run out of bounds, in hockey, to avoid getting hit. You are not allowed to hit anyone with your stick, unless it was a follow- through on a shot. Fighting is illegal and results in at least a 5 min penalty or more. Fighting usually results in response to a dirty play/player - retribution and punishment - see ' the code' Hockey players do not stay down unless they are really hurt, normally they pop back up and keep playing - other sports could LEARN from this Most common hockey injuries are stitches and loosing teeth aka 'spitting chicklets' - when this happens, hockey players don't usually even miss a shift Hockey players play through the pain on broken legs, broken feet, broken jaws, noses and facial bones. If at all humanly or inhumanly possible, hockey players finish their shift, the game and the series. Ice Hockey is rated as the SECOND most difficult and tough sport, just behind boxing. Less than a 1% difference between the two. It is followed by football, mma....but who really cares about that. Each game is a full 60 minutes, made up of three 20 min periods. The clock is stopped when game play is halted. The NHL regular season is 82 games ( also has pre-season) and Stanley Cup Playoffs where you must win '4' best of 7 series, hence a minimun of 16 games to a maximum of 28 games played! An entire football season just to win the cup! Hence, it is the hardest trophy in professional sports to win! Finally, THERE IS NOTHING LIKE PLAY-OFF HOCKEY!

If youre playing at this level, you were likely born with skates on. Im sure hockey has the most fights, and maybe the worst injuries. Those skate blades have cut throats in games. There are player positions: Center, Left Wing, Right Wing, Forward, Goalie, etc.... They are all kicking each others ass for the Stanley Cup. The oldest trophy in sports. During the regular season the on ice officials tend to call more penalties and such. But during the playoffs they ease back and let the game go full throttle. Playoff hockey is ALWAYS brutal and fast. Its the best of 7 games, like the world series. So imagine the Stanley Cup Final, the 2 best teams in the league going at each other for at least 4 games over the course of a week or so. Its effing epic.

I'd highly recommend trying to go to a nearby NHL game this upcoming season. I think the closest to you is the Washington Capitals. They happen to have the #3 all-time goal scorer who, this season, will likely become #2, and next season will probably surpass Wayne Gretzky (the Great One) for most goals scored in a career. It'd be a cool experience, and something you could create a video for.

Fighting is allowed in hockey, one on one til one of them hits the ice.
@Wallacea982 жыл бұрын
When playing hockey and you get to the age where hitting is allowed you are actually taught to be up against the boards and glass when you are taking a hit, the reason is the majority of hits near the boards if you are up against the boards the board and glass will absorb most of the impact. A hit when you are standing up against the boards is way less painful and dangerous than a hit in the open ice. The most dangerous place to be hit in my opinion is 3-5 feet away from the boards, these cause people to awkwardly slam into the boards and sometimes break bones and cause the most injuries specifically to your legs, back, and neck. Open ice hits are mostly just a concern for concussions since you are taking a head on collision with nothing to embrace the impact. 99% of the time the boards are your friend when taking a hit but the 1% when you are a few feet away are the scariest.

Defensemen are typically in the best position to lay people out, but in the past up until recently they used to have goons on teams whose only job was to fight and hurt people who stepped out of line or to send a message and change the momentum of a game. For better or worse, that era is over now.

@@dunsonhouse There are still fights, just way less. About 10 years ago there were a bunch of guys dying from overdoses, suicide, etc. all stemming from CTE and the pain medication teams would give their tough guys. The NHL had to clamp down on it from a liability perspective. That said, it's still worth watching, the game is very exciting and faster and more skilled than it's ever been. You will still see big hits and a fight here and there but the goon era is now a thing of the past.

Hockey most certainly has the most fights. The big 1 on 1 fights are more rare nowadays, but the whole line scrapping is pretty much after ANY big hit. We "police" ourselves. We take a huge hit, you're gonna answer for that. Either later in the game, or we remember your number for next time. It's an unwritten rule, and that's why when we fight we don't get suspended. Just get out in "time out" for a few minutes then back to it

There is no specific position for hitting but there is a role on the team. Defensemen tend to be larger to be able to physically control the other team in front of the net, forwards break into a few categories: Playmakers Snipers (Shooters) Enforcers (Fighters/tough guys) Two-Way Forwards (Equally responsible for defense and offense) and Power-Forwards, they are usually big, fast and strong, they throw body checks in the offensive zone and use their size to open lanes to the net and screen the goalie.

For scoring and dangles. Look up Kane, Giroux, McDavid, Gaudreau, Datsyuk, Crosby, Ovechkin. Oh, and you want to be against the glass (boards) when being hit. The boards actually take the force of most of the hit. They teach you to get up against the boards when you see a hit coming. And, football is just a different kind of hitting. When you tackle a guy, you're actually taking some of the impact by wrapping him up. You'll notice the worst looking football tackles are the ones when they aren't wrapping him up.... well, that's hockey hits. All of them. And, we wear less padding. We have more hip and leg padding.... but hockey shoulder pads are nothing compared to football shoulder pads. Same with helmets. Hockey helmets are light and not actually that protective. Not compared to a football helmet anyway. And, in hockey, they wear a half shield or nothing to cover their faces. Now, in football, you're going to being hitting you head more ao they need the head protection more. Football, you have a full cage and some, a visor too. (Lower levels of hockey, most players wear a full visor or a cage). Yes.... I'm a Flyers fan.... but they didn't the nickname "The Broad Street Bullies" by being bitches. Sorry this is so long.

Skates have better traction than any sneakers on hardwood tbh. That’s if you have proper skates that are sharpened correctly. The edges just dig in so much that I could never do the movements I can do on skates. By proper skates I mean molded , laces tight enough , and sharp blades. Laces and blades are the biggest. Make sure your skates are sharp and tie your laces VERY tight. Otherwise your ankles won’t stay straight which is what almost everyone’s problem is when learning.
