I shoot with the Canon R and I love it. If you read the reviews of the Nikon or the canon people tend to dismiss them and complain about only one card slot or the crop factor of the 4K etc. People miss the point. We live in a time where our cameras are amazing, Nikon/Canon/Sony/Olympus doesn't matter. In the end is is the human taking the photo and the tools we have provide amazing images. Nice video. Enjoy the journey

100% agree Tommie. I always like to say that budget doesn't matter and you should embrace what camera you own or can afford. One of the great things is that there is a camera out there for everyone. Find what works for you and enjoy the photographic experiences that open up to you.

Very tempted by the R. It's initial pounding by the pundits seemed to overlook many of it's really useful features; not everyone needs full width 4K video etc.,, certainly not me. Been using the 5D's mk1, II & III for many years but find the kit heavy these days, and my eye now struggle in low light. I did consider switching to Sony, but the R seems the logical next step. How have you found the R?
@tommiestrydom9734 жыл бұрын
@@Mrbluesplayer43 I will be honest the image quality is amazing. 30megpixel more than enough. Dynamic rande good. ISO is good but I never go above 3500iso anyway ( only when shooting birds in low light) With the new firmware upgrade focusing is amazing. WAY better than my old 5Ds. ALL the button are customizable. I truly love it. I mainly do landscape and birds w/ it but great portrait camera for my kids / dogs. I looked at sony but I love the flippy screen on the canon. All my canon lenses work perfectly on the R w/ adapter. To me I did not like the ergonomics of the Sony. I'm sure it's an amazing camera but the R felt right in my hands. I wont bother "upgrading " to the R5 if it come out corona virus depending

@@tommiestrydom973 Thanks Tommie, really appreciate your verdict. Likewise the Sony seemed a little awkward for a Canon user like me, and I'm a bit too long in the tooth nor have the inclination to get to grips with another system. I've tried an R in-shop (only) and it seemed familiar in the hand although not having the traditional mode dial on top seemed quite strange, and wearing vary-focals I found I had to be more precise looking through the viewfinder. The specs seem more than enough for me, and the mixed reviews seemed to have brought the price down, so the R5 would not be on my radar either and probably way too expensive anyway. What appeals is a smaller, lighter body, excellent image quality, better low light performance, the flippy screen, being able to actually see things in low light (which I now struggle with) and the manual focus assist.

I liked the frosted sand on the beach. One day I was running late for work. There had been a heavy frost over night and morning was foggy. As i was walking to my car , the sun burned through the fog and warm light melted the frost very quickly, leaving white shadows on the bright green grass. You can see what I mean the next time your car, covered with frost and the sun melts it leaving a white shadow on the shaded side. Every year since then I keep looking and hoping to experience that again.

Enjoyed watching your time with the world of mirrorless. Love the photos you captured of my ancestral homeland. I have been using Sony for a couple years now, having gone from the a7riii to my a6400, downsizing, given my age. I capture some good photos here in America's Heartland, mostly landscape, along the mighty Mississippi River, Farms and Historical Sites. Love the history of this country and this city along old, man river. Mirrorless, has a lot to offer, but, I confess, some of my best work was with the a7riii. I'm getting used to the a6400 and once Spring arrives, I can get out into farm country once again. Thanks for sharing your experience with us.

Thanks for the vlog Kim. I got myself a Z6 last August after a trip to Harris left me realising my 11 year old Olympus E-510 just wasn't cutting the mustard anymore, my Samsung phone was taking better images. Chose the Z6 as there was a really good offer price for it with the 24-70mm F4 lens at the time. Turned out to be a lucky move, my photography skills have grown hugely and continue to do so. Got the 14-30mm F4 just before Christmas, another great lens - if you're visiting the Caithness direction while you've still got the Z6 you're welcome to a wee shottie. Lots of interesting stuff to discover in the menus like the Interval Timer (great for star trails) and Focus Shift Shooting (focus stacking) which sorts out the depth of field issues shooting close foregrounds with the 14-30 (when the images are combined in Photoshop). Lenses are expensive though, I'm looking forward to the new 70-200mm F2.8 due out in June - price is a wee bit more than a month's take home pay for me but the reviews so far are stellar. Absolutely no regrets on the Z6. Would recommend Daviud Busch's book, a bit more user friendly than the manual. Looking forward to more images. Thanks again.

I was a Nikon shooter for many years. I went from film to full frame digital and enjoyed using my Nikon cameras. I switched to Sony mirrorless a few years ago as Nikon didn't have any at the time. One thing to keep in mind is that since there is no mirror, you are more likely to get dust on the sensor, especially if changing out lenses often. I usually check to see if my sensor needs cleaning before I go on a shoot and clean it if necessary. Not hard to do.

I know I'd like focus peaking, and better yet an EVF viewfinder for visualizing images as they appear. I have read that the Z6 comes with an F mount adapter, but when I think about moving to full frame I'd sacrifice resolution by using a DX lens on full frame. due to the crop factor. All my lenses aren't DX only , but they were saved for,hard won, and I can't afford to buy similar full frame lenses. Quite the pickle.

Well, mirorless cameras offers so much compared to DSLRs. They're lighweight, easy to carry, small, you have the extraordinary EVF system that allows you to see in real time what your image looks like in the viewfinder...etc. I have a Nikon D500 for wildlife and action it is awesome but for everything else, I'm using a Fuji X-T30 and it is such a joy to use! Super powerful, compact, fantastic image quality, EVF, focus peaking (sooooo useful for landscape photography)...it just give you the envy to go out and shoot! :) Not to say DSLR are good for the bin now, certainly not, you can still get amazing pictures wit them, but they're on the way down and mirorless cameras bring more on the table.

It doesn't matter which tool you use (DSLR, Mirrorless, a particular brand, etc). It is the photographer who is responsible for the image not the tool. There are way too many blaming the gear for the photographers flaws. Why so many people are switching to mirrorless is due youtubers and marketing hype. There is nothing wrong with using a DSLR even today. I own a D800 (my "previous" camera who now serves as backup), a D850 (my main shooting camera) and an X-T30 (a small mirrorless take-anywhere camera). There is nothing that the mirrorless system gives me that I miss on my DSLR's. My trusty D850, and even my D800, will stay with me for a while longer.

I 100% agree Hibon. I was just curious as to why so many people are going mirrorless. I will always use my DSLR from time to time (I only have this camera on loan for 3 months as a trisl) but I was genuinely surprised with what this camera can do. It was just a personal feeling but I always like to advocate that it doesn't matter what camera you own, it's about what you can do with your camera that counts (in fact that's a line out of a talk I deliver to camera clubs). Enjoy whatever cameras you have. Afterall your photography should be enjoyable to you so if you prefer your DSLR great! 🙂

Nice one Kim, I love the look of the Z6, I went in store and had a wee squinty as I am thinking about changing from my current Sony A6000 , I shoot with primes which was ok when I only had two, I now have five and it is just a pain in the backside, sony didn't have decent aspc zooms when I started out with this camera. One thing that really appeals to me with the z6 is the weather sealing, I am constantly flapping about the smallest of splashes with my wee camera. in store the evf and monitor looked fantastic on the Nikon, also focus stacking and best of all the 24-70 F4-- camera and adapter for under £2000. Anyway wanted to mention I watched your video on the moray coast, I am in Aberdeenshire so you inspired me to take a run up and explore for the first time, I have been really impressed and actually been four times in the past month, love the light house and the beach but I think my fave so far is Burghead , I love the breakwater and got a couple of smashing shots, I am saving for a new computer and when I get it I will be able to layer a few shots I took during the recent storms. if you are interested in seeing my shots I am on FB = Allan MacMillan Photography, I enjoy your channel and your enthusiasm and the fact that you promote our neck of the woods, keep up the good work, all the best ; 0 }

I think as a landscape photographer the switch to mirrorless will not be a ground breaking event for you, those days you photograph the birds will make you forget the days of DSLR. The majority of benefits from mirrorless come from the autofocus and video capabilities. I suspect that in the end the EVF will be the biggest benefit as the what-you-see-is-what-you-get display and ability to review images through it without having to deal with environmental light you get with the live view screens. If you do decide that you are going to get a mirrorless camera after the loaner period is up you should definitely take a look at all the brands as there are many very good options out there.

Quite a few people in our camera club are going mirrorless. And not for any obvious photography reason. We, in the club are of a certain age, where it is becoming harder to hold cameras lens etc because of the weight. So with a few shoulder reconstructions in the club, mirrorless is much lighter.

My personal experience is that even with live view (or whatever it may be called), and all else that is touted, one still has to understand the very basics of photography while using a mirrorless camera. I still often time find myself just adjusting with no care as to what the camera is telling me... and I always (if the situation allows me) use HDR techniques to get the highs and the low that the eye sees but cameras only can be told to see if allowed to. HDR techniques can be used without being the typical HDR... just blend in (or out) what one likes from another photo from another layer.

Thanks Kim for this vlog, I've been contemplating going mirrorless for a good while now, it's so tempting lol I have heard that it does give a much more cleaner look to the images as it doesn't have that mirror reflected appearance. Did you notice the quality like that change for you? Beautiful images, I love the reeds and calm waters shot, would look beautiful framed.
@kimgrantphotography4 жыл бұрын
I noticed a massive quality change BUT it's hard for me to know whether this is 100% from the mirrorless/DSLR comparison. My DSLR has a crop sensor - the Z6 has a full frame sensor. My DSLR is also 7 years old and technology has advanced a lot since then. Whatever decision you make in the future, I wish you well with it. Thanks also for the kind words.
@dougsanderson52654 жыл бұрын
What do you mean by "mirror reflected appearance"? You do realize that when you capture an image with a DSLR the mirror is not in the path to the sensor? It has zero effect on image quality. Image quality is all about the lens, sensor and skill of the photographer.
@jennifersayers80414 жыл бұрын
@@dougsanderson5265 I'm not sure to be honest. I use a Canon 5 d mark iv, 16-35mm lens f4. I've seen a friend's picture taken on a Sony a7iv and it just looks a much cleaner image, whereas the Canon would have a teeny bit more noise in the image, both camera settings the same, same lens etc. I thought it was because the Sony was mirrorless. Whereas the canon image was reflected off the internal mirror to sensor hence the mirror look. I'm still learning, trying lol
@dougsanderson52654 жыл бұрын
@@jennifersayers8041 Ah, well the main purpose of the mirror is to allow you see "through the lens" (TTL). It actually is in the way of the light getting to the sensor. You can see that when you take your lens off. Once the shutter is activated the mirror swings out of the way allowing light to get the sensor. The reason mirrorless cameras are more compact is because you can save the space required by the mirror movement bringing the lens closer to the sensor. I won't speculate as to the difference in image quality you are seeing but it surely isn't the mirror.

Why Z6 and not Z7 if you not see to the price?

I´ve noticed that even the press use mirrorless. Generally I think Sony will win the competition, if Nikon does not wake up. Sonys autofocus is so much better, and they have opened up for other brands to make glass for their cameras, while Nikon and Canon want to keep others out. Being a Nikon guy, it's really hard for me to admit, that if I ever raise the money (I'm a senior citizen) to a mirrorless camera system, it will be Sony.

What I think would be most helpful for me compared to the DSLR is being able to switch between photography and filming easily and smoothly. But a new camera body is way out of my budget for the moment, so I'll be waiting a while.

Embrace what you have Pamela. It doesn't matter what camera you own or you budget, photography/videography should be accessable to all. I hope that one day you'll get the camera your dream of but for now embrace what you have. 🙂

I am fed up of hearing about mirrorless cameras so I switched off, it's nothing personal but I am not a equipment orientated person. I am a one camera one lens person, that camera will never be replaced unless it's broken and unrepairable or when the time comes when it wont do what I want it to do!

Good move, but now you need to move on to the best mirrorless system Fujifilm X 🙂
