For why Garmadon looks black, It was shown in one of the mini-movies that were released before Season 1. Garmadon was struck by magic lightning, which of course fried him and fused his ribs to his skin. And it sent him straight to the Underworld. You can watch those mini-movies on KZbin if you want

I would recommend watching the 2011 Ninjago Mini-movies before jumping into season 1. The first 4 are filler, but fun, but the fifth and final one explains how garmadon gained control of the skulkin army and how he was banished to the underworld.
