That's one thing that no one expects about Aus, my aunt had a panic attack when she first visited because the sky seems so much bigger because we have so little hills and mostly low lying building.

When I came to where I live now, I left crowded, tree-filled vistas for wide open spaces. I can see clouds & light now in ways I used to think were fanciful features existing only in paintings. And endless stars in the dark places. OMG.

It's very much the same way where I live in the States. There's so much sky and open space... It's like you feel so open compared to living in the mountains or densely populated areas. My family visits from the high desert in California and they always say it's such a shock because you can see green grass and trees for miles and the sky is so blue and clean. (There's a lot of smog where they live.)

I definitely know what you mean about going home but not really going home. That's how I felt when I had to move back to the states after living in the UK for 1.5 years. Sure I was "home," but I had completely changed (for the better, I think) after living abroad for so long. Now my feeling of home isn't attached to where my childhood happened, but to where I became my own person.

I can relate to what you say so much! I am from Paris, and people DO NOT understand why i am living in China. I know that it is because They cannot understand because they would never leave, but that doesn't mean we feel the same way, that's why they always ask this question. And I can relate so much to what you said about" it's not even holidays" everytime i go back to Paris, we have so many people to see, so many things to do, we have to spend time with family and stuff, it's not a holiday it's more or less a duty, and people don't get that, they kind of take that for granted, but we do spend money to come etc...Also Paris is expensive haha, I guess as much as Australia. Like home is where we settled down, not where we grew up, my home is where my cat is, my bed is, my stuff is, my comfort zone is, my independance is. Like living back to our parents after having being independant feels weird and for independant people like you, it's so important and that makes the whole difference. You don't have the same marks at your parent's home but you have them in Tokyo. Anyways, I can relate 100% to what you say haha :) Love

Interesting that you noticed that about the sky. When I first came back from japan in 08 I also noticed the exact same thing. I also notice it whenever I come home from Belgium, where I've been living for almost five years now. It just stretches out endlessly, it's one of the main things I miss about Australia. :(

Melissa K I would love dearly to travel to Japan for a holiday but not to live. It's funny, when you are a kid you dream about all these other countries but as you get older and learn all the negatives of those countries you fantasized about as a kid, the more content you grow to be with Australia. Sure there are negatives here but honestly I totally understand why we are known as the lucky country.

I want to know what your specific way of eating pies is! When we were in school and we ordered the plain beef pie for lunch from the canteen, we would take the top pastry off, mix the tomato sauce in with the mince and eat it, then eat all of the bottom pastry on its own. Oops weird I know! :D You seem so happy in this video, good to come back to Aussie for a little break I imagine! Completely understand the going home bit, the house I grew up in got sold and I never lived in the house Mum lives in now, so it's not my home, it's just a place I go to visit Mum! So my house is my home now

Really laughed at someone saying "How you going? I'm thanks" lolol! Culture shock, from HOME. The fish and chip shops there do loads more stuff compared to here. I miss Australia. It's gorgeous. I've never been to Japan, but it's my dream holiday and I know I will someday. Take care =)

Oh, it's funny that you mention the sky, because I also noticed that when I moved from Hamburg, Germany to Liverpool, England. The buildings here are a lot smaller and sometimes it overwhelms me a bit how much of the sky I can see, although I spent the first 20 years of my life in small villages. I also don't really have a home anymore in Germany as my mum and brother have moved twice since I moved out and everything is different and I don't feel comfortable there at all. Never like calling it home country or home town. It's just the place I was born and raised, but home is where the heart is. And my heart is longing for Japan at the moment aha.

Great video Emma! I'm Australian (from Victoria) and I have lived here my whole life. I love to travel as well l, I'm off to Hong Kong for the fourth time next Friday and the way you describe Tokyo as a concrete jungle really resonated with me. It really makes you appreciate the beauty and nature that we have so readily available in Aus. I hope to live overseas one day too (once I finish the spiral that is tertiary education - 6 years and still going) but hey at least I'll be able to get a job just about anywhere?! Ahaha well glad you enjoyed your time "home" I have the same strange feeling when I go back to visit my parents as I have lived in melbourne for the past 6 years since I was 18, so I would describe Melbourne as my home now, not really the country town I grew up in. Funny that! Xx

I lived in the same house from the ages of about 2 to 18 and then after I moved out my parents moved house. It's such a weird feeling visiting them now like "this is "home" in the sense it's where mum and dad are but also I've never lived here". Change is weird (but generally good ^_^).

Another relaxing video :) I was left wondering about that custard apple, it looked weird to me, although the inside was very familiar, now I now why. It seems Australian custard apples are a hybrid between the Central and South-American varieties (sugar-apple and cherimoya). In my country we eat their cousin the guanabana (soursop). It's delicious too. Just add mangoes and coconuts to that garden, and it's all the fruit you'll ever need.

I understand how you're feeling. I'm going through the same situation. I moved to Taiwan three years ago when I was 19, and at the beginning it was incredibly hard, but now, to me Taiwan is home in the sense of, there's where I first began to be an adult, there's where I first became independent and learned how to take care of myself, and how to love my own company rather than feeling lonely. I'm home in Honduras(Central America) for the first time in three years, and although I do feel at home with my family whom I've missed terribly, my hometown doesn't feel quite right anymore. People think I'm crazy or believe myself to be in a pedestal for living in a first world country now, and assume that is the reason of why I'm excited to go back once summer break is over. However the reason of me wanting to go back is because Taiwan is where I first became my own person, where I learned about a new culture, a new language, and where I found friends that became family. Regardless of the commodities I have there, my excitement to go back lies solely in the fact that Taiwan is where I first created my home and began to be my own person and began to love myself for who I am. People say home is where the heart is, but when bits of your heart are in several places of the world, anywhere that is home will still be missing that bit of yourself that you left back elsewhere, and will crave it, yet that doesn't mean that you are not appreciating what you have at the moment.

oh wow, you live in the same neck of the woods I do, I love it hear and the walk with your Dad is my peaceful place, it's were I get to breath when I feel closed in. I lived on a farm so big sky has always been a thing, it's even more interesting now, thinking of all the things you experience in Japan and knowing that you grew up here makes me think that maybe one day I will go for a holiday and experience Japan with an interest to experience all the differences. One of my friends has a daughter who has just come to Australia to live but has lived her life in India so the differences that she is experiencing and what she loves about Australia is sooo different than what my mind thought. Difference is good isn't it. Hope your trip home is good

That was so cool. Reminds me of when I go back home. Places I've been: Romania -> Maine, US -> Ohio, US -> California, US -> Netherlands -> back to US. I know what you mean when you say Japan feels like your home now.

I moved out when I started my college, and I'm living in my dorm room now. My parents moved to Austria last year (I am from the Netherlands), and the house is sold, so when I'm finished with college I have no home to return to. Now thát's weird..
