Great job getting it done. I’m about 18 months in the start of my running/ultrarunning journey, have done 6-7 50k and 1 100k. One thing I am just now learning is just how much my nutrition/hydration has been off. If you find yourself bonking in later stages it might not be fitness or going out too hot, it is just not enough carbs/water/sodium. I am pounding 80-90 carbs/hr, 1L of water/hr, 1000mg sodium an hour (in training too, anything over 90 minutes I give the full eating/drinking treatment). The thing is, to do that with “sports nutrition” it is insanely expensive. You want a glucose:fructose ratio of 2:1-1:0.8 depending on how many carbs an hour and how long you are going. Luckily we aren’t the first to hit this problem. Cyclist have learned that you can train to take in an insane amount of carbs (upwards of 150g/hr)… and they do so just by using sugar (which is a 1:1 fructose to glucose ratio) and table salt (1 sodium to 1 chloride) in water bottles. If you want to spend a bit more and do what the sports nutrition stuff is doing, buy maltodextrin in bulk(carbo gain on amazon), fructose in bulk and sodium citrate in bulk. Measure out 48g of maltodextrin, 32g of fructose, 3g of sodium citrate, pour it into a bottle and you have 80g of carbs and 650mg of sodium in 1 bottle. And then you have the ability to adjust as needed. It is way less sweet than the equivalent amount of sugar. Sodium citrate absorbs easier because it has less “stuff” the body doesn’t need with 3 sodium for every 1 citrate, it also isn’t a very salty taste. Most sports nutrition have way too little sodium because they don’t want to cause gut distress. Even most salt pills are only 100mg of sodium, where many can need 10x that in an hour. So try training and racing with more carbs/water/sodium and see how you feel later in races. It isn’t magic, you’ll just find you will feel more durable and able to keep the legs turning over longer.

Congrats on completing your first ultra🎉 also thanks for sharing video with us. Would you mind give some tips for first time ultra runners?? I've done few road marathons and thinking of doing that next year. Im looking at the shoes and trying to figure out the route. Is there much asphalt on the track? Im looking at inov8 roclite or mudclaw shoes and not sure what/if any of these would be good for this race. I'll be grateful for reply 🙏 cheers. Patrycja

Thanks Patrycja, A few simple tips I would give would be - Trail running is much different to road racing, you're not really focused on the speed you are running at as there will be technical sections, big hills etc where you have no choice but to hike, so don't worry about the watch too much - Fueling is really important (lesson learnt the hard way), make sure you practice eating solid foods on practice runs, and have a plan in place for race day - eat even when you're not hungry - Try a few trail races throughout the year to get used to what it entails, IMRA (Irish Mountain Running Association) have loads of races all year round and they are very welcoming to everyone With the shoes I used the Hoka Speedgoat and found them great as there are a few short sections on the road but also sections that are a bit mucky, others have loose stones but most of it is on a dirt trail which is fairly compact under foot. Hope all that helped 😀
