“Imagine hanging your washing out nextdoor to a pub”. I don’t know if it’s intentional or you just have a brilliant outlook on life but this comment had me in stitches. We live in a bonkers world where a Brit in Dallas, Texas can speak to his TV to a Brit in the UK “no, Jack, I don’t think I can imagine that”. Loving your channel, it’s the perfect reminder on how lovely our homeland is. Truly selfish (as I plan to move back to Norfolk or Suffolk) but would you consider looking around Norwich, Cromer, Sheringham, Wells-Next-The-Sea or Woodbridge? These are all beautiful towns in East Anglia and I think you’ll love them. No riff raff there! As always, please keep these coming, Jack. Appreciated.

Thank you for a very interesting video. I lived and worked in the Hastings/St.Leonards area for most of my life. There is much I cannot tell you, but I do know the "abandoned House' perched atop the cliff, was at one time called "the Eversfield Chest Hospital", where it (as the name suggests) was a specialist treatment centre, for such conditions as TB, severe asthma etc. I have been away from this part of the world for over 30 years, and it's so interesting to see how things have changed. So thanks again !

Nice video! In fact one of the best I've seen of what I now call my home town! I moved down from London 25 years ago and havn't looked back since. I love it here! I live in a flat in a mid-Victorian house. St Leonards was the place to come during those times and wealthy people visited from all over Europe. Victoria stayed here because she believed it was good for her health. She would go with Albert to the St Leonards Opera House which used to be around the corner from Warrior Square. The building burned down unfortunately, but you passed by where it used to be on your way to the train station. Eventually Brighton became more popular. I'm glad you noticed the new artwork that has appeared where the old Lido used to be. I only discovered it a few weeks ago! I'm almost 70 now, but I used to regularly walk from Warrior Square to Bexhill every saturday along the sea front, do some shopping, have some lunch and then walk back. I can still manage it one way, but not every week! Yes, that bakers you pointed out is a family run business and very popular. I hope you enjoyed your visit! :)
@jackryanmiller2 ай бұрын
Ahh thank you so much I really appreciate the comment and especially the info, love learning about these places. Extremely envious that you live here! I’ll try the walk all the way to Bexhill next time and definitely try that bakery !!
@PlanetaryCitizen2 ай бұрын
@@jackryanmiller Yes, its a nice walk, you just have to carry on past where you saw the artwork. The one you filmed is called Menelaus by Hero32 (so I read in our local paper). The grassed over area used to be the Lido. I think there are some good photos and videos of it online. The area with the words "Be Happy" scrawled on the wall used to be a gun emplacement during WW2. It was called "Doodlebug Alley" here because the V1 flying bombs used to pass over on their way to London, so I guess they used to try and shoot them down!
@junosaxon43702 ай бұрын
@@PlanetaryCitizenHi! As I am hoping to retire in Hastings soon I am really curious about your walk from Warrior Square to Bexhill. May I ask, how long does it take you to walk there? It seems quite a long walk. People advise me to retire in Bexhill instead of Hastings, I guess I'll have to visit both myself, but as I learned that my ancestors came from Hastings I am inclined to retire there, maybe it will have a kind of homely feel to it. Nice to hear you are enjoying your retirement. Take care.
@PlanetaryCitizen2 ай бұрын
@@junosaxon4370 Hi, nice to hear from you. I would say at the speed I walk it takes me about an hour and 15 minutes. Most of the time I stay on the path, but I do occasionally walk on the beach. It's a very nice walk. Some of it passes by the railway line. There's a cafe half-way along, and lots of beach huts. I saw a sparrowhawk hunting on one occasion, which was fascinating! Hastings does have its hilly parts and Bexhill is all flat as far as I'm aware. The latter is far more expensive though. I would suggest taking the train to Hastings, having a look around, walking into St Leonards, then taking the train from St Leonards Warrior Square station to Bexhill to see what you think. Hope this helps!
@junosaxon43702 ай бұрын
@@PlanetaryCitizen Thank you, I will take your advice. I am around the same age as you, I just want to retire near the sea. I thought of different places such as Deal (it seems quaint and nice) or Dover (Dover, to be near France where I used to live when I went to work abroad) but my ideas always take me back to Hastings, even though I've heard it's a little rough in some places. If I could choose to live anywhere in the world, it would be in Menton, France, but that's too late for me now. Thank you again for your advice. Stay safe.

The big house over the arches used to be the Eversfield chest hospital which my grandpa Dr Vaughan ran…They used to have some beds in open ended beach huts that would turn on a turntable so the TB patients could face the sea and overlook and breathe in the fresh sea air! It later became Hastings & St Leonard’s Children’s services where I worked until it shut in 2011….It was such a beautiful place. Wish it could be made safe and reopen!

Hi from one of those "grand houses just under the cliff"! Thanks for making it out to West St Leonards - I haven't seen another video of this kind come out of this far west. I think the abandoned house on the hill was some kind of sanatorium. What you missed was the part called Burtons' St Leonards, which is hidden away round the back and is the part of the town that was built first as a luxury holiday resort for the rich; that part is stunning. Plus there are lots of art galleries on Norman Road. But this part, around West Marina Gardens, is very special. I moved here a year ago and I absolutely love it here.

There's some very trendy areas of st. Lens, that are now quite expensive compared to what it use to be...There's also a large Park called Alexander park, so st. Lens does have a bit of everything. That was an interesting and upbeat video. We used to live in Bexhill, but stayed at the Royal Victoria Hotel in St Leonards,while looking for a flat. We had a great large bedroom and seperate bathroom, but the best part was the breakfast next day, in a large dining area on the 1st floor, with large windows with panorific views of the beach and sea.To best honest though, after 4 years, we got a bit bored with the area, after going for local walks almost every day. Hastings was good for the fish and chip shops and the shops in the old part, but not much to do in St Leonards.

Another interesting video. I really enjoy your videos and your comments. I had seen your Hastings video some time ago which interested me very much as it's where I hope to retire (if I can). I learned that my ancestors came from Hastings. St.Leonards is another interesting place for me as it's just nearby. It looked quiet, peaceful. The cafe looks nice on the seafront, a nice place to relax with a coffee, and Warrior Square also looks nice. I agree that seeing the sea at the end of a street or road as you are approaching it is a great feeling. The weather looked very English, but it doesn't bother me at all, it helps give that peaceful atmosphere. After living abroad for some time, it feels nice to be back, English weather included. As you went further you came to another green area next to the sea with very nice houses facing the beach, that part looked really nice. By the way, that beer garden looked great.Your drone shots of St.Leonards also gave very good views of the town. I hope you can do a video of Bexhill sometime, I'm curious to see what you think of it. I really do appreciate what you are doing with these videos. See you on the next one. Take care.

Thanks for this great video Jack. My mother lived for 22 years next door to Marine Court up until 2007. It was only recently that I discovered David Bowie had played a few gigs at a music club called The Witch Doctor back in the 60s, which was actually in Marine Court - worth looking into. St Leonards has definitely got more "funky" than it was when she lived there, with all the colourful murals and crazy cafes. The beaches have always been great and fairly quiet even in mid summer. Makes me want to check out the Goat Ledge cafe - such fun!

I think the biggest transformation is in Norman Road. It used to be a backwater with dusty shop windows and eccentric handwritten notes giving opening times - antiques and bric a brac mainly. The marina court, look at it again. It was built to look like a ship from out at sea. The building high up on top of the arches is the old eversfield hospital. There were huge buildings all along there, including the children’s home I grew up in, but they are gradually being pulled down due to subsidence. The children’s home went first in the 80s. St Leonard’s is only residential, it’s not favoured but locals, it’s just a walk through to Hastings. It’s been cleared up a lot and was starting to be known as the new ‘Brighton lanes’ due to a number of bohemian shops that started popping up a few years ago, but sadly they didn’t last due to lack of foot fall. Prior to that, it was full of drink and drug users, so it’s come a long way.
