I was never in the military but grew up near a couple huge bases so I learned alot from veterans growing up, and some of the best advice I ever learned was "lieutenants always need to listen to their sergeants". It carried over into my career since at my last job I was basically a middle manager/specialist but the people who were "under" me were more experienced then I was. Experience trumps rank any day in my book.

Congrats BUTTER! Er.. Sir! Glad to hear that the windmill treatment is still around! Go Army!
@480pilot4 жыл бұрын
@The ReflexBoxer Several names for it, but it's where a new officer gets ganged up on by enlisted. Since officers are obligated to return salutes (sorta), you get a bunch of enlisted about 6 to 10 feet apart and make the new "Butter" keep saluting. hence if they keep returning salutes it looks like a windmill.
@480pilot4 жыл бұрын
@The ReflexBoxer first Congratulations! Lead well! Second, er.. Yeah, that's why I was hinting "Butter" , short for "ButterBar" 2lt/Ensign. That's exactly who's supposed to get nailed. And third, if you space everyone out correctly, holding the salute looks even sillier!

What did I do wrong? Nothing, we talked for a while then he said that the Army wanted me to go to West Point. I declined as that type of formal education doesn’t fit me. Hey Dom - I have a question for you that is burning me. I have been trying to decide between commissioning into the Army or the Air Force. I'm toward Air Force due to lifestyle and job choices and leaning toward Army for the culture and loan repayment. My main concern is what the Army recruiters have been telling me. They are basically saying that if I choose to commission, I will have no idea what my job field will be in or even the commitment time I will have until AFTER I've committed. The Air Force allows me to apply to specific officer positions and go that way. Is what the Army recruiters telling me true - do you really go into commissioning completely blind? It sounds kind of crazy.

Welcome to the club. You will never get permissive TDY if you show face at your unit while going through in-processing. PLEASE let others know - Your origin station should have approved permissive TDY on your DA 31. It needs to be signed off by an O-5 IIRC, but those are easy to find at schoolhouses. Once you reach your destination with your preapproved DA31, report to housing. They will stamp it. Easy 10 days to "house hunt." Learning the bureaucracy is your job.

So what exactly is your purpose as an officer? And how does your purpose change as you rise in ranks. I’m thinking about going to college for mechanical engineering so I can use that hopefully in the Air Force and for my love of building things and working on cars after the Air Force (Air Force maybe). But I want to go to Syracuse university, but that college is incredibly expensive and want to use a scholarship to gain a free education. I figure if I decide I enjoy work in the Air Force (which it seems like work I’d enjoy) I might stay rather than working for the minimum required time. Also, if I’m not making sense it’s because no one in my family besides my uncle who I haven’t spoken to in a while was the only one in my family to enlist in the modern military so I don’t know how anything goes or any codes to anything. I’m basically starting a brand new career path my entire family has never entered before

So I'm considering going a similar route as you. I'm a female and interested in going to Med school either while in the military or after. There are so many pros and cons between the army vs marines but I'm really drawn to the Marines. Sure i could go to med school in the army and be an army doc, but it's something about the Marines that's more appealing as far as the medical route. It'll take me LONGER to reach my goal but i think going the Marines route may be worth it in the long run. Do you have any advice regarding that or do you know anybody who has gone to the Marines and then med school after serving their 4 years?
@kidthndr26 жыл бұрын
I dont know anyone personally , however I do know that if you decide to go to Med school make sure you have time to study for the MCAT! Look into the military's medschool in Bethesda!
@markmccormick43546 жыл бұрын
I went to West Point for 4 years, got accepted to Med School in my senior year and did the HPSP scholarship in the Army directly after graduating USMA. Long story short, I didn't have a strong medical background prior to med school and struggled A LOT throughout my 3 years in medical school (really 4 years though because I needed to repeat a year). Over time, I realized medical school was not for me and I chose to resign from school and go back to the army as a fresh 2LT. In hindsight, if your top priority is to be a DOCTOR in the Army, the best route you can take is to go to a civilian school for undergrad with a strong pre-med program, accept an HPSP scholarship for medical school around the time you're applying for school, and after completion of med school you will serve in the military as a physician (To be honest, there is very little difference in physicians commissioned in the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, etc they're all essentially doing the same job). Personally, I felt that the Army and Medical School were two entirely different beasts, and in my experience training in medical school at Army hospitals, the culture of military medicine is COMPLETELY different than the basic Army. It really takes a special person who can succeed in both environments. I don't regret going the route I did - I really enjoyed West Point and I learned in medical school about what I don't want to do in life, but its definitely worth taking a hard look at that before you make a decision. Feel free to message or email me if you have other questions
@JAH.11035 жыл бұрын
The marine corps does not have its own medical corps. They use the navy's. For instance, my father was a marine and I have always loved the marine corps. But I am in nursing school now and want to be a military nurse when I graduate. If I do that I will probably choose navy nurse corps. They still serve with the marines but I'd still be a naval officer first. So if you want to go medical route, I'd say join the navy.

Everyone wants the LT to be humble but the people requesting humility are wanting of the same humility. The army made the rules. Not LTs. Its envy and jealousy that compels enlisted personnel to be enthralled with animosity toward an innocent LT. A degree means you are capable of learning exotic and large amounts of knowledge in short periods of time. It means, in general, your open minded. Can you say that about yourself as an enlisted member? A degree means you have the potential to communicate well. Communication wins wars. I dont remember meeting drill sergeants who were exceptional communicators. It was mostly, " figure it out!" or " ask your battle buddy" who doesn't know anymore than you. Privates and sergeants alike don't usually seem like critical thinkers or humble enough to admit they were WRONG.
