Hi Molly! I'm an American that spent a year living in South Africa on a research station in the Kalahari Desert. I not only came from the other side of the world, I went from seeing the same 30 people every day for a year to being back in a metropolitan area. The adjustment coming home was rough. My friends back at the research station were sending me photos of the animals we worked with, and I missed them (the humans and the animals). Getting back into a routine was the most helpful for me, but not the same routine that I had before I went to South Africa. I got a job at a restaurant while I worked on my next steps, and set some new goals for myself that I could feasibly work towards in a few months time. I still cried on my one year anniversary of coming home lol. It takes some time, but keeping busy and building that routine is so helpful!

Hi Molly, the purple is no more 😂☹️ I just wanted to say, I haven’t been abroad but I feel like I can relate to what you said about feeling like nothing has changed and everything has changed. I’ve just moved back home after being at uni for 3 years and I totally get what you mean. Where I live is in the countryside with nothing around and everything is shut so early but I went to uni in a city where there was still life late. My friends are spread all over the country, at uni we did everything together and now I’m home I kinda do everything on my own. I dunno I just feel so odd like I’m just back home again like I’m 18 but I’m not I’m 22 and so different to when I last lived here. I don’t know how to explain it but what you said just kinda resonated with me! Xx

I went to spain for 9 months to teach English. I think coming home just took time. I enjoyed seeing old friends and having a sense of community again. Also being able to eat certain things which i couldnt find in spain haha. I think youve just got to keep busy and have things booked to look forward to. And also reflect and notice around you what you enjoy about home and what you missed and spend time enjoying that

I studied abroad for five months away from home so obviously not as long but I found it helpful to talk to people who had experienced the same travels as me. It was a reminder that part of my life happened with people who could also relate to the same lost feeling I felt. I also had to find joy again in things that had brought me joy before I left but hadn’t sparked quite the same feeling on return. It’s definitely a weird in between state so I’ve been there. I found working towards my next big goal was helpful as I adjusted back.

I haven't been abroad for a konger period of time yet but some of my friends recently have and many of them were really struggling. I think the best thing you can do is keep yourself busy, spend a lot of time with friends and family and in your case especially: remember that it's not the end :) You can always go back or explore new parts of the world! Being able to work remotely from anywhere in the world is such an amazing opportunity and I'm sure this will not have been the last longer travel experience for you :)

I lived in Asia and the USA for 12 years, coming back to Australia was extremely weird. I went back to my hometown (Sydney) and felt so unsettled. Slotting back into my old life felt wrong. I had changed, it seemed like no one else had! I have moved to Melbourne (never lived here before) and it feels much better!! I dont think we are trying to copy UK pubs here - we do it our own way!!
