Most of those free standing ATMs are so expensive they are basically scams. You can find mostly free ATMs in bank branches.

@@alice_hml The bad thing is they aren't few. They are just distributed like the proverbial ice cream vendor at beaches, aka "all clustered in basically line of sight of each other, but rarely somewhere else". Because despite several of them having "cooperation agreements on atms" they still plop the bank branches where their main customers have "median access" to it, which usually is "in the city center" for all of them alike. Making the cooperation almost pointless.

oh hey, the cafe in the beginning is just a couple of blocks from where I used to live in Berlin. It's also the street where Technoviking was filmed a few hundred meters down the Rossenthaler strasse :) And that Kaufland later is where I used to shop. Very nostalgic. I miss Berlin.

You don’t need a bank in Germany, you can go to any supermarket, buy something and then ask for cashback, in English, yes they say cashback, and then say how much you want and they just charge your bank for it except you don’t have any bank charges like at an ATM. It’s absolutely pouring here in Rheinland-Pfalz too. Scheiss Wetter!

Amazing getting see your travel channel back in Germany! I've been waiting for this ever since I saw you were heading back to Berlin for a minute. You were a big inspiration for my own move to Germany, and the creation of my own travel channel too that I make with my wife. If you find yourself in Munich before you head back to the UK I'd be more than happy to buy you a litre!

The cigarettes at the cashier blows my mind. In my part of Canada, it’s actually illegal to display cigarettes for sale. All the cigarettes are behind shelf coverings so you can’t see them. You can’t even see what kinds they have. We have strict rules about what kinds of stores they can be sold in, too.
@evan

@KonradTheWizzard
@KonradTheWizzard Жыл бұрын
It's so that you have to be at the checkout before you can get them and the cashier has to unlock the machine or cabinet (presumably after checking you are over 18). It's also no longer legal to post public ads for cigarettes. It does actually limit the amount of cigarettes sold - ten years ago Germany was a smoky kind of hell compared to today. However, I would also prefer for cigarettes to be available in specialty stores only or on only one or two of the twelve checkout lines. Personally I don't mind the guy who wants a really fancy cigar once a week or the one who occasionally smokes a scented pipe, but cigarettes are worse than a bucket of ammonia.

You just have to find out, which Bank has a deal with your Bank, if so, ATM is free. Just find the "connected" ones. Also, normally, as a German you would barely take only 100, it is more popular to take 400, and that would last a while. Using credit cards, you often times get later to know, that they have put a "using"-fee added on on your bank account. Thats, why we use only certain ( the right) ATMs and do not pay small items with cards.

Tip: You can also get cash (up to €200) in the most supermarkets without extra fees. If you pay your shoping, you ask for cash and the card will be charged with the shoping bill + the cash. It is a service for customer, so you have to also buy something. Currently 86% of the German supermarkets offer this service.

The reason why the cigerattes are right at the register is not because they are offerd specificly but because you have to get them right next to the cassier. This way underage teens can't try and steal them as easily compared to if they were some random place in the shop.

Coming to Berlin to learn German is probably a mistake. Almost everyone here (I live in Berlin) will automatically switch to English when they notice that you're a native English speaker. Even the mail men here speak English. My 12 year old German nephew likes visiting me in Berlin because he thinks it cool that everyone speaks English.
