ABOUT ME:
Hi!! I’m Lydia, I'm 25, 5'2 and an Aries. I'm originally from Poole in Dorset but right now I'm in my 3rd year studying medicine in Southampton after being rejected from multiple med schools over multiple years. Before this I did a Biology degree and then I trained to be a science teacher (both in Southampton) before finally getting a place at med school! I make weekly and daily vlogs documenting my journey as well as uni and study advice.... outside of medicine I work in a pub to fund my uni costs, love love to travel and explore new places, binge watch netflix and go out out :) Thank you so much for watching xx

The fact you still have to work at a pub whilst putting all this time into your placements is so sad. I think the government should really help out people at this stage of their career. There needs to be a post-grad apprenticeship system for what you're doing, so that you actually get paid for time in the GP/Hospital. I know it works towards your final qualification and all that but it still low-key seems like an exploit of your time.

Agree - training to be a doctor must be a fulltime job in itself. The government really should be supporting students like Lydia instead of being obsessed with tax cuts all the time.

The hardest part for me is when I did my teacher training in 2019, I had to do a similar amount of placement hours and the government paid me the equivalent of a full-time salary. I think it's because they don't have problem recruiting medical students but we have a teacher recruitment problem so it's all about demand which means I sadly don't think it will change any time soon :/ x

I'm a vet student in Australia and our course requirements ask for us to complete 7 weeks of extra-mural placements/pre-clinical placements, where we essentially must go out to farms to help out, and get hands on animal handling with farm animals and learn about the livestock industry and common practices. We are essentially free labour. Depending on the type of farm, we must sometimes stay with the farmer for the week (sometimes alone and most of us are girls! talk about dangerous! in the middle of nowhere and with limited reception if shit hits the fan) Don't get me wrong, lots of the farmers are sweet, very knowledgeable and teach us lots, but some definitely take advantage of the fact that they now have free labour. And no, we are not paid. Depending on the farm ie dairy, I had to wake up at 4am every morning and work until 7pm at night. The people were great, extremely informative and taught us so many things, let us castrate a couple bulls, do injections, etc. But man, those were long hours. Then in 3rd - 5th year we must then complete EME clinical placements as vet hospitals and clinics. 14 weeks! And they must all be completed within our semester breaks (the 7 farm placements must also be done during our holidays). To make matter sworse, 4th and 5th year we go into trimesters with only 2 weeks break between trimesters. Its fucking tiring. Its exhausting. Not only are studying and have class from 8am to sometimes 7 or 8pm, we also have placements during our much needed holidays. And as if it couldn't be worse, to get into vet school in the first place you need work experience at clinics, hospitals and farms with all sorts of animals (smallies, largies and wildlife). And no, we do not get paid for any of it. In fact, the uni pays the places that take us in 💀 And 5th year year we do nothing but hospital rotations around our unis hospital, which is great because we get hands on in all the specialities and do a couple surgeries and consults ourselves, but mannnnnnn

Quite surprised they didn't provide transport from the uni to the placement. Med schools usually do that.

In first and second year we had 1 day at GP a fortnight and they provided Taxis, in 4th/5th year they provide accommodation if you're placed out of Southampton but 3rd year is weird. We do get reimbursed for transport and those driving get petrol money so I'm having to keep a record of all the buses I catch.

If you're studying asthma and COPD, why not go whole hog and also toss emphysema into the mix?
