In today’s video I will show you the steps to make a flag cake for the 4th of July!

American Flag Cake
Ingredients
Cake:
2 1/2 cups flour
2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
1 3/4 cups sugar
3 eggs
1/2 cup sour cream
3:4 cup butter
1/4 cup vegetable oil
1 tbsp vanilla extract
1 cup buttermilk
Almond Cream Cheese Icing
1/2 cup cream cheese, softened
1 cup butter
2 1/2 cups powdered sugar
2 tbsp heavy cream
Pinch salt
1 tsp almond extract
Toppings:
25 strawberries
50 blueberries
Instructions
1. Preheat oven to 350*. Line a 12x 27 inch cake pan with parchment paper.
2. Cream the butter and sugar with a paddle attachment in a stand mixer for 4-5 minutes on medium speed until light and fluffy.
3. While the butter and sugar are creaming whisk together the dry ingredients.
4. Beat in the eggs one at a time. Scrape the sides of the mixing bowl after each addition and then add vanilla extract.
5. Add the sour cream and veg oil and mix until combined.
6. Alternate adding the dry ingredients with the buttermilk 1/3 at a time, beginning and ending with dry ingredients. So not over-mix!
7. Spread the batter into the pan and bake 15-20 minutes. Check at 15 minutes. Keep baking until toothpick comes out clean. My cake took exactly 35 minutes with the baking dish I used.
8. For the icing, mix the cream cheese and butter on medium high speed for 1 minute with whisk attachment.
9. Add the powdered sugar all at one and turn the mixer on low to combine. Once combined add the cream, salt, and almond extract, and mix on medium high speed for 4-5 minutes.
10. Ice and decorate the cake with strawberries and blueberries. You can use a star tip to pipe between the blueberries if you want to. You can also pipe a shell border around the cake to finish the edges if you wish.
