More expensive doesn’t necessarily mean a “better” pen. So if you love Pilot Metropolitans, Lamys, Kawecos and TWSBI continue to buy them. Breaking the bank does not mean higher quality or a better writing experience. As a newer fountain pen user it is very hard to find fountain pen KZbinrs who are not pen snobs.
@toxmot3 ай бұрын
@@kailahmom1 It's about personal preference. Some people do not like sailor and would prefer twsbi, nothing wrong with that. My choices for favorites pens are not dictated by the price. The only time it is, is when it's too expensive for me 😂 The jump from $50 pens to $200 pens can have a significant upgrade in experience but I've heard that the jumps from $500 to $1000 would not have a huge impact. At that point it's not about the nib, it's about the material that is used like the laquer and such. But in regards to "pen snobs" (not sure what the term is) but I am totally fine with users who only collect high-end pens if that is their preference.. and vice versa. To each their own.

21:23 - That makes so much sense. I said to myself a bit ago, "Hey you have a bunch or $20 pens. If you bought 20 less, you could have gotten a great $400 pen." I definitely stopped my pen purchasing at the end of last year. I now have a couple pens that I love that are on the higher end, but even with those I am waiting until I really feel it's the right time.
@toxmot3 ай бұрын
I wish I realized earlier that I’ll only be needing my higher end pens because now that I have them I mostly only use them nowadays. It is hard to stick by but now that I have many that I don’t use a lot, it seems like a waste though they are still very great pens. I do still love them but dang, I always use my sailor and pilot. In this way, the cost per use really makes it worth it. Good that you stopped purchasing late last year. I also like waiting until it’s the right time.

The sac is in need of replacement on the Parker 75 converter, they go hard with age or if it’s a latex sac you can kill it by using Japanese inks in it.

Such a nice collection! Thanks for sharing! My favourite pens in my collection right now are my Pilot Custom Heritage 91 (Black / Silver) and my most recent purchase, the Sailor Pro Gear Smoothie Series in Wild Berry (my first Sailor and I love it.) (Was that Sailor in your pen case that you no longer use pink? I love pink fountain pens.... :) I'm in a similar place as you with collecting - I have so many Kaweco Sports in different colours and also Lamy Safaris in different colours but in the past year I have moved away from buying the same pens in different colours. I am taking a much more "considered" approach to buying pens and am willing to shell out a bit more to get the writing experience I'm looking for. I have very few pens that I regret buying but I'm not in a rush to buy more soon. (Holding out for Scriptus in October!)

Ah yes, Scriptus! And Fountain Pen Day sales :) Always a tough time lol. Congrats on your first Sailor! After my first one, I haven’t looked back. I hear great things about the Pilot Custom Heritage and just higher end Pilots in general. I’m looking forward to my Pilot Custom 74. It’s not higher end, but such a classic cult fav that I haven’t tried. I also want to stop buying pens in multiple colours. For Sailor, I probably will if I see a colorway I really love but for others, I will refrain lol. Luckily, even with Sailor I am picky. Yes, it’s a pink sailor lecoule that’s sitting in the Galen case. Will update if I part with it.

I was interested in your comment that you are making a transition to fewer, more lovable pens, which will mean spending more on each pen. I made that transition after only two pens! I now have only seven pens including my two starter pens, which were both under $35. The other five pens are much more costly and I love them! I made a mistake buying two more expensive pens and I am returning them because they are not as lovable. I want only really lovable pens.
@toxmot3 ай бұрын
What a smart decision on your part! You must have really good self control to have made the transition after only 2 pens. I probably couldn’t have done that because with all the cute colours they come out with in the lower end range pens, it’s too easy to just click ‘add to cart’. This is why I have 3 TWSBI ECOs which I don’t need plus another 5 Kaweco I also don’t need. It’s time to stop! :)

It's a wonderful hobby and you can take your time to explore or go nuts testing out different pens. For starters, I recommend twsbi eco because it's so fun to see the ink sloshing around and as a newbie, it kept me very intrigued. Secondly the pilot metropolitan is also a great choice. I'll be making a video for this in the near future as I've received several questions about starter pens. Have fun!

For the vintage Parker, pay a visit to Fountain Pen Hospital, and Anderson Pens. The hardening mechanism might need some lubrication. Good luck. Just avoid bladder mechanisms to avoid the hassles, Parker uses the same converters between vintage & modern fountain pens.

Hey, I think if you don’t like your writing, then a fountain pen is perfect for you. I actually don’t like my writing either but the fountain pen makes my writing look smoother and nicer. That is the perks of using a fountain pen :) I started with TWSBI ECO because you can see the inks sloshing around in there which is fun. So I recommend the TWSBI ECO or TWSBI Diamond Mini. Both are demonstrator types where you can see the ink inside. Another great starter pen is Pilot Metropolitan. It’s not pricey and looks good at the office. Hope that helps! Oh a good place is to order from Goulet Pens if you are in the States or Wonderpens in Canada.

I started collecting pens this year. My goal was to always have a smaller collection of pens. No more than 10. But now that I have tried pens, some sold, some returned. I only want 4 fountain pens. 5 tops. And these 4 I have spent considerably more on but I feel comfortable doing so. I've also done the same thing with planners and journals. Just using 2 Plotters. Quality over quantity. Everything is more streamlined and minimal. I love it. It is too easy to go down that rabbit hole with stationery or any other hobbies. I have to set parameters for myself.

Thanks for the recommendation. Is the water used to keep the shape of the sack? Or the integrity of the plastic? I guess I should try to clean it to see what is happening to the sack.

Keeping water in the sac does nothing to stop the degradation of it. The only time storing pens with water in them is a useful function is in vintage piston fillers that use a cork seal

Why do you like smaller nibs? I thought the larger nibs wrote smoother.
@toxmot3 ай бұрын
Hm…I’ve never thought of it that way before! One main reason for me preferring smaller nibs is because my handwriting is small and I like the easier control that comes with smaller nibs. You could be absolutely right about the larger nibs being smoother. I think the smoothness of larger nibs would come from it being wetter.

"Collection" means special items (for you at least); what you have there is generic uninspiring items. Nothing wrong with generic pens, if you use/need them, but most of them were/are never inked... What you do is not collecting, but hoarding. Most of the time people don't tell you the truth (or are too stupid to know the truth) and I hope my message is helping you in your quest.
@toxmot2 ай бұрын
You are saying that I am hoarding pens and that they are all “generic uninspiring items” but to me, they are special items because they were gifted or have a memory attached to it. :) Sure, there are other pens like TWSBI Eco that I have 3 of which the only difference is the colour - if you want to call that hoarding, then that is fine. To say that I have hoarded all my pens and that most were uninked would be an oversight on your part.
@iscse2 ай бұрын
@@toxmot , I might be wrong, but didn't you say that you don't even know the model of the pen you got from your grandparents? Also, when every pen has a story, you should know the big sizes - yes, you should know the nib sizes - 10, 50 or 100 it shouldn't be a problem - of all your pens (with the exception of those you haven't inked and never intend to), if you are a collector and not a hoarder (nothing wrong with being one). Of course I'm not saying you have hoarded all your pens - if that's what comes out of my first message, I'm sorry, it was not my intention - I'm just saying whatever generic pens without a story that is relatable (fi, "my favourite author used a X pen to give me an autograf and I also got one to feel the vibes") are not worthy to be considered part of a "collection". Have a great day!
@hannahnfvideos10432 ай бұрын
I’ve done research on hoarding. Hoarding usually is not organized at all (ex: items everywhere on the floor etc) and can pose safety issues. It can also cause overwhelming stress and isolation. I wouldn’t call having a few organized cases of pens hoarding. Also, usually hoarders are ashamed of their hoarding and will try to hide what’s going on. I doubt a hoarder would post their house on KZbin to show everyone.
@iscseАй бұрын
@@hannahnfvideos1043, hoarding is usually a compulsion to accumulate useless or - in this case - worthless things, but it's also a simple practice of accumulating such things.
