My comment to Tom ------- Damn bro, I felt this at a visceral level and was brought to tears, for 2 reasons: 1st: because I don’t enjoy seeing anyone this depressed and I wish I could do something to help 2nd: because I’ve been there, not with fame but feeling that I failed my wife and 4 kids. Thinking they would be better off if I was gone is a very bad place to be. I felt this! I feel all his songs, but I feel this one deeply. In my own mental health journey, one of the things that helped me was to write out my pain, so I didn't keep holding it. After 2 years, I realize that I'm a bit late to this reaction, but... Tom has never apologized to anyone for any of his songs. However, the reactions from a great many of his fans - many fearing that the "bad thoughts" had come back with a vengeance, and strong enough to drive him to a "permanent solution to a temporary problem" - were enough that Tom felt he had to issue an explanation for Balloons. He did not apologize for it (nor should he have), but he did say that it was inspired by the fact that even though he's living [relatively] good now, the bad days don't really stop coming around, and he just happened to be at a low point when the inspiration for Balloons struck. The bad times are there along with the good times, and we've all got to work through them. He reiterated that he's grateful for the good things that have come his way and appreciates the love of his fans beyond mere words. This is why we love him.

The question.. Famous Life vs Normal Life.. it's all about balance. Just know if you are walking around the streets of LA, you are famous and you will get noticed. The solution is to get a second crib in the middle of nowhere. Yeah for the first couple of days the fame will still make you famous.. but after that you're just "that guy with the tattoos" or "Tom? he's a nice guy". When things start to get you down, go to the country, breathe some fresh air. When you get recharged and you're ready to embrace the fame again, then come back to LA.

the chorus to me sounds like it might be about the media and certain experiences tom might've had with close calls and death threats. if you build a wall there's always someone who will want to break it. but its not in vain and its never something fought against alone. HOG can be the foundation and support beams tom needs but there's always things we don't see or hear in order to help.
