Excellent garden! ❤️ When we put in our first front yard garden, I was worried how the neighbors I hadn’t talked to would react. It only took a couple of weeks of working on it before most of the people on our street would stop and check it out. Everybody was extremely positive about it. It quickly became a regular stop for the ones who walked/ran, and a reason to get outside, hangout with the neighbors , and try some of anything in season for the others. Hope your front yard garden brings you as much joy as ours did.

Yes, that's true here too! I was not expecting that community aspect at all. I have given countless tours to passersby. It's been so great getting to know everyone in an age when most people tend to stay isolated in their homes!

I also have a front yard garden but much smaller than yours. I live in a row house and so it is very noticeable by all my neighbors. One nice thing that happened with my neighbor to the right of me-he was so busy that he couldn’t keep up with mowing his lawn,which was very weedy,so I suggested that I would be willing to plant flowers at our adjoining fence for him,and he suggested that I could plant his entire lawn to anything I wanted-so I did!!! It was only 10x10 but between his and mine , and the fact that I put up supports and plastic row covers for the winter, I am able to garden for 10 out of 12 months in Zone 7a

I love stories like this!! It's funny I NEVER intended to put my garden in the front yard, but that was the hand I was dealt with my house. I hated it in the beginning, but I know ALL my neighbors because of it. Everyone who walks their dog stops to talk to me. People ask questions. I've given tours to random pedestrians. I'm seeing other gardens in people's front yards in my neighborhood in the last few years too. It's really been an amazing side effect of gardening in the front yard!

I live in an urban area too, though the sun hits my backyard, my neighbors are close and there's only a chain link fence between us so I was very mindful to build a garden and trellis system that looked tailored, organized and not lower the value of their homes by making a messy garden. I have black painted raised beds as well and my trellis follow both fences to create beautiful 8f tall green walls. I did build a nice 8x10 greenhouse, a smaller 4x6 one for tomatoes (it's very humid here and blithe was a problem so I settled for cramming 9 tomato plants in one small greenhouse). My main greenhouse has 2 shelves for seedlings and microgreens and E shaped raised beds with trellises in the back for winter peas/ summer greenhouse cucumbers. I built a simplified pergola over my deck for grapes and scrarlet runner beans, it's like a cocoon of greens and flowers. I grow 50f of sweet peas, we never seem to have enough. I know this was a year ago but I can't imagine life without my greenhouse. I'd totally add a greenhouse. I did squeeze in 4 fruit trees across the yard, apricots and cherries are so popular with the kids. This year I'm removing my strawberries from the raised beds, we lost so many to moldiness and pest. That's why they grow them on hills with garden fabrics on farms, they rot on the flat soil. I decided to move them to a grow tower so the fruit wouldn't sit on the soil. You have a beautiful garden, wish more people would build and invest in growing food and landscaping with edible plants.
@ReSprout2 жыл бұрын
Yes I'm thinking greenhouse too! And I love the sound of that pergola. I've been thinking of putting something similar over the driveway, like a carport, so I can run grapes and things on it. That will be a "conversation" with the hubs certainly! 🤣

Excellent. I'm jealous. I wish I had the area you have to garden. That said, I'm the crazy neighbor here. We moved to a condo in a semi-urban enclave in Ohio several years ago. We've devoted the foundation-area of our unit not to bushes and marigolds, but to an intensive organic garden. We're mostly in-ground, but grow eight tomatoes and most of our peppers in large, self-watering containers to take advantage of our patio. And I've met nearly all of my neighbors, who stop by, amazed at the bounty.

So excited about your front yard garden. I also have a front yard garden. One year (my best year) I got over 1100 lbs out of the garden. Of course that included alot of heavy crops like potatoes, pumpkin, corn and tomatoes. I have alot of insect pressure and have been unable to grow any squash, or cucumber well. This year I put some turkeys in the garden (I can get away with that where I live) and they demolished the squash bugs, beetles and grubs. I put them in the garden after the seedlings had grown enough that the turkeys didn't harm them. And took them out of the garden by mid August when the tomatoes were ripening (they like to eat tomatoes). I loved the trellis'. When you add all of your growing spaces together, you have a lot of garden. I'm looking forward to your other videos. Another youtuber that has really used his spaces well for growing is One Yard Revolution. I learned a lot from him.

Well...hello there.....nice garden and herb area. In my opinion you need to cover your beds from the seedlings to harvest, otherwise you crop will be eaten in a short time or later on! by the pests! You have to water regularly, moisty soil all time. Use wooden trays/bed for your herbs, the water got to get out when there is too much water in the trays, metal is no go.....smiles. You could cover the walking areas with a fiber cloth to prevent the weed, because suddenly the weed will grow in your beds as well!The pests: use predators when you see the pests, they are very effective/useful. Use the covers and you might get close to your goal.....stay safe and enjoy life and your garden....Thomas, Denmark

Looks like slugs or cucumber beetles . . . or, both. I just use the tried and true squish method on cucumber beetles and have found that about a week of every day visits relieves the pest pressure. You don't have to get rid of them. Just knock them back. The slugs are a pain. I don't use Sluggo because I worry about what else might eat it. Friends of mine swear by the beer in a plate method. I just make sure to keep everything clean and healthy with regular harvests. They eat the wilting/diseased/dying stuff. I also found that if I leave a few leaves that are in their delicious zone near the bed, they go to the pile instead of to my plants. Good job all around! Kudos!
@ReSprout3 жыл бұрын
Oh that interesting on leaving the piles to distract the slugs. I'm gonna have to try that!

It looks beautiful and it's kind of my goal. I wanted to do something like this and I'm on my way to achieve my goal. I don't know why people are obsessed with the paved and grass filled lawns that can grow nothing to eat. I sarted growing some veggies during pandamic and now I'm not going to stop.

Leftover charcoal powder after a barbecue works great as a pesticide I save it all the time . Carbon content in charcoal keeps pest away . I usually do it in evening spray water on infected plant and sprinkle charcoal powder and let the plants sit in it and that should take care of a lot of pests. Something I learned from my grandfather
@ReSprout3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the tip! Do you use commercial charcoal, or do you mean the charred embers after a wood fire? Definitely trying to avoid all the chemicals in commercial BBQ charcoal!

I live in a community and supposed to only plant a vegetable garden exactly in the back of my home. I didn't think it would be a big deal if I planted them in the side yard, as it received the most amount of sunlight. Boy oh boy...the amount of push back I received from the builder (who still controlled the HOA) and the other HOA members, made me realize these idiots would never understand the importance of growing your own food, on your own land for which you pay taxes. Fast forward 7 years later, I just bought a different home with no HOA and plenty of space, and looking forward to start my garden wherever I want on my lot!

GOOD FOR YOU!! I would do exactly the same thing!

I can understand why people stop and stare. Your veggie garden looks so neat and well kept, that it deserves to be on display. * One little tip for an empty, harvested veggie bed - don't dig it over! Just clear any weeds, then add a layer of good compost mulch on top. (See Charles Dowding for some no-dig inspiration.)

We are not allowed to plant vegetables in our front yard. It's a stupid regulation in this neighborhood. They said that a front yard vegetable garden would lower the property value. I do my veggies at the backyard which is huge by the way. However, I wish I could do more at the front. Awesome job, lady
@ReSprout3 жыл бұрын
That sucks! You have garden space in the back at least, so that's good! My backyard is 100% full shade and tiny, so the front yard was the only option for me. I hated it at the time, but it's been really great getting to know my neighbors.

For my organic insecticide I use 2-3 clove of garlic in 1 liter of water. But now I use 1 tsp baking soda, 1 tsp liquid/castile soap (not dish washing soap), 1 tsp neem oil (any oil will do) mix all ingredients in 1 liter of water. Mix well and preferable spray on the leaves and under the leaves after the sun sets. Don't use under the sun. Spray once per day until the pests are gone. Hope this will help.

You're so nice Carolyn! Believe me, I WANTED to garden in the backyard, but it was just a cave back there, and it was also a smaller space to boot. So I figured if I was gonna do the front yard, I was gonna OWN it! :-)

You can totally do both a small greenhouse and a bunch of espalier trees in that space! Especially if you choose semi-dwarf varieties. And the blossoms are so fabulous on stone fruit, and on pomegranate, as well as fragrant on citrus, so it makes such a happy place any spot you put them. Also, definitely consider Columnar Apples if they will grow in your zone. They save you the espalier hassle and produce quicker. Put in one each Scarlet Sentinel, Golden Sentinel, and North Pole (if you can find it). Or whichever will grow in NY.

I'm in Chandler, Az zone 9B. I've got a "sort of" plan for the front yard garden. It is more of a walking food garden with paths covered in wood chips to grow the soil and save water in our desert environment. I say "sort of" because I've still got a lot of work to do to remove rock and create burms near the sidewalk to keep any rainwater run off in our yard. I look forward to the front yard garden to be able to interact with the neighbors. Your front yard garden is so inspiring! I watched the video and love the continuity of design and color. The black acts as a frame for all of the color in the garden. It's perfect! Thank you for the tour! P.S. I'm curious to know if you've inspired any neighbors to plant out their front yards for food. I would love to start a food growing revolution in our neighborhood!
