I got to work with John while he lived here in Houston. What a great player and a guy with a cool sense of humor. Wonderful musician.

Listen to that tone. John Park can make you cry. Listen to that technique. John Park can do anything he wants to do on an alto saxophone. How is it that John Park did not make his way to the top before his early death. He is a major figure in the world of modern jazz.

It was asked how a talent like this went unnoticed for so long...... John and I were friends, and we played together for awhile. I was at his funeral, and asked the same question. A relationship he had been in, restricted his performing, and when the relationship ended, he began to branch out. He was in the process of recording a solo album when he died......way too young!

"If Winter Comes" is so appropriate. It's pretty cold over here in New England. If John Park's playing doesn't warm a heart, the pulse should be checked next.

No, it's not on CD, but I've posted all the songs on the album, so you can just download all the songs at 480 p (near CD quality) and burn to CD. I also see that Park's son posted a msg on my posting of John playing Autumn Leaves watch?v=U1Pj9-3DDTc. He said he has some of the LP's and offered to sell copies to people.

Cooljazz, i just came across your post re the late, magnificent John Park. I play Kenton's Street of Dreams regularly so I can enjoy John's achingly beautiful solo. Any way to get in touch with his son re acquiring any of John's music? I'm Dick Avery @ djaverytx@gmail.com....many thanks.

"achingly beautiful solo". I've been searching for words to describe what Mr. Park's solos do to me. Thanks.

No, he has no resemblance to Cannonball. He was himself and unmistakably so.

Does any one know whether this track was recorded in Kansas City? I go there from time to time to dine and listen to jazz at the Majestic Restaurant. Is there even the most remote possibility this could have been recorded there? If not, any ideas about where? Any information that can be provided, would be greatly appreciated. Absolutely love this soulful interpretation of this old standard. It would have been a wonderful thrill to have heard John perform this live. His early passing was a tremendous loss for the jazz world at large.
@cooljazzr5 жыл бұрын
Yes! It was recorded at the Kansas City jazz festival on 3/16/1975. According to his son, John recorded it himself.

Hello, I'm Byron Atkins and I play guitar on My Funny Valentine, with John Park. Unfortunately the main content of my guitar solos was cut out of this version. This is basically my own arrangement, my intro that we used. John Park was a wonderful alto player and a great human being!! I loved playing John Park!!!

John Park is an amazing Saxophonist, but he played over the melody so much, you couldn't tell it was My Funny Valentine. He pretty much just soloed over the entire song. I think I would have preferred hearing the actual proper melody, then a solo
@cooljazzr4 жыл бұрын
I think he played enough of the melody to hear the song, but added so much more to make it his own.
@byronatkins6425 Жыл бұрын
This was a casual almost spontaneous session created for John Park when he was in Texarkana. Jerry Loveall and my father Jerry Atkins made it possible.
