@@joshuadoss1955 was deep in the mountains crossing a boulder field. Basically i slipped and leg fell in and ankle bent. Used my garmin to call sar and they hooked me up to the long line under the helicopter. Really painful experience but also super cool hanging from under the chopper

My Basic Ultralight outfit and gear remains the same for one night or weeks. Only real weather and clothing concerns is the rain , it's warm to hot most of the time. Actually a nice rain feels quite good. For me the items that change according to the length of the trip is the amount of food and medications. I 'm in the habit of leaving a spare set of clean clothes in the vehicle for after the trip. When checking into a motel it helps if you have a reasonably clean appearance.

I have the JetBoil: Flash, Sumo and Mini-mo. I use the Mini-Mo burner with the Flash pot in my 2-person camping kit and the Mini-Mo pot and Flash burner in my solo kit. Solo, I only boil water but I want a low and wide pot for my dog to clean the pot. Dual person I generally use the Jetboil to boil water but it must be a back-up stove so carry the Mini-mo with simmer. Regardless,I LOVE Jetboil.

Nice setup as always. You made some great points on the packs. I have struggled with "THE" pack at times. I bought the new bridger but the 55 Liter version. Very robust like all mystery ranch packs are. I was torn at first between buying it or the black hyperlite mountain gear junction 2400 or 3400 packs. Was my gear light enough? or packable enough to fit in the hyperlite? Is the hyperlite comfortable? I dont carry much camera gear myself so i probably could have gone with the hyperlite. So far i am happy with the bridger 55 but i did have some trouble fitting my sleeping bag into its bottom sleeping bag compartment. Mainly my fault because i went back to a synthetic sleeping bag and i'm putting it into a roll top wet dry bag rather than a compression sack. It still fit in the end but i had to unclip the packs divider and put the sleeping bag into the pack from the top drawstring opening and not through its bottom zippered compartment. But i soon plan to try out a down quilt, so packability im sure wont be a problem. Stay safe guys! Hike on!

Been going light for a long time. I own no ultralight gear. I choose things that work and weigh less. Rarely exceed 24 lbs starting out with food and water for 3 days. It's so much more comfortable and not being exhausted at camp gives me time to explore. Try it.

I'm watching as many of your vids ( and few others) as possible currently. My wife and I starting over with backpacking this year. Been nearly 30 years for us both to say we did it much (we're 50 and 55 years old). So this is a loaded question, but I'm trying to decide between the 55 or 65 ltr packs for both of us. They will likely be Mystery Ranch Bridger's. We are planning to do 3 night trips this year. (Havasupai the end of March and Kings Peak in Utah mid August). We will always be splitting the common gear (tent, food, cooking supplies, etc), so that makes me lean towards the 55ltr. I'm twice the size of my wife so will carry a heavier load. But will I wish I had a bigger 65 ltr if we go for say a 5 nighter someday? Would you care to offer generalized advice? Thanks for the vids!! I'm taking lotsa notes & am looking forward to getting back into this hobby.

We both have the Bridger 55's. I'm still torn thinking I should have went with the 65, but too late now. Too expensive to change. On our recent Havasupai trip my pack was 40#'s. I felt like I had the bare minimum too. Not in the whole UL terms, but what I needed for 3 nights and 4 days. That 40#'s included 3ltr of water. The 11 mile hike out with 2700 vertical scared me. I used 2 liters and will work on water loading amounts more. The Mystery Ranch packs are really nice and worth the cost and weight. Onto planning our next one (if it will ever stop SNOWING !)

MSR wind burner style is just a better product if and this is if one wants a system like these. Unless I am in a super windy area I will just go with my 4 oz mini bush buddy and 2 oz if needed alcohol burner and screen. Have a bsr too but I hate hate hate carrying half empty fuel bottles. Alcohol is a always known what you have in fuel alternative.

The quilt review was my question too. I’ve always been a sleeping bag person, but am about to try a Zenbivy Light bed. I can’t get behind sleeping on a rubbery pad with nothing under me, and the Zenbivy has a sheet w/hood that fits over a pad. Maybe you’d like that better?

You I know, I see most bear canisters looking exactly like that. Is that a standard to create them or can you get ones that would be more "fitting" for your backpack? Wow, Eric! 38-42 lbs.? That's a ton of weight. I hope you are able to shed some of those lbs. off as you will enjoy it a lot more. True, the lightweight backpacks aren't meant to carry much weight but that's the idea. Cut down your total weight and your pack won't be so uncomfortable. I carried 38 lbs. up to Colchuck Lake in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness and thought I was going to die! I now have a GG Mariposa with a total load of under 19 lbs. including water, food and fuel. Sweet!

How many calories a day do you each eat? I almost completely filled up my bear vault 500 with meals just for me on a 3 day 2 night. I planned for 3500-4000 a day depending on snacks, but I usually burn at least 4500 calories a day backpacking. I donno how you all survive with 3 days and 4 nights worth of food for in a similar sized can.

A 45lb load out must be heavenly... Try a load out with a PRC-77 radio, Two drycell 12 volt batteries, antenna bag. MRE's about 12 pks, 6 40MM grenades, 6 to 10 30 rd mag fully loaded with 5.56mm ammo, M16A2 with grenade launcher... Spare socks, underwear, field jacket, camo netting, map & compass (no gps or cell ph) and then hump that 65 to 75lbs all day long or until the LT says to bivouac here! 0311's ROCK THE PARK DUDE- SEMPER FI GUNG HO...gotta go!

I am not sure what to make of your gear. You have a light weight pack and a quilt and then a bunch of heavy gear. I don’t own that pack, I am in the Zpacks train but without even reviewing it I am sure with 42 pounds it was not a joy. It’s not the tool for the job. I think your Mystery Ranch pack is the old Dana Design pack company. I owned one back in the 90s and it was certainly robust, but also an anchor. It weighed about as much as my base weight empty. I think your gear all has to match up. I love my quilt but in the winter I prefer my Western Mountaineering sleeping bag, I just don’t think a quilt is the tool for the job come winter. I have multiple tents, packs and sleep systems. My three season gear is all Zpacks and I love their gear. Not so much in the winter. I hike with my dog too. We did this Long Trail in Vermont this year and next summer it’s the Colorado Trial. The Duplex is a palace for one and a dog. My dog loves the trails more than anything. I am much older than you and like to do big days so weight is very important to me. Much more than it was when I was young. I love carrying a UL pack and I could never go back to a heavy pack again. Some pack for camp and others pack for hiking. It’s all good and there is no wrong way. I can see that Mystery Ranch pack being great if I was still rock climbing in the Tetons and hauling climbing gear and camping gear. Their suspension and hip belt are bomb proof. If you do review the Hyperlite pack please review it with a much lighter load. It’s not meant for 42 pounds. Take care
