My father was a preacher, so I'd only ever heard religious country and western music. So back in the 70's I was on the way to this christian youth camp one time, and I was in the back of this guy's car, and I grabbed a tape off the floor and put it in the cassette player. The batteries were starting to go a bit flat, and the first song that came on was Misty Mountain Hop, and aside from anything else, that monotone he sings the start of each line in was even more pronounced because of the low batteries, and it absolutely *_BLEW MY MIND._* I had no idea there was music like that. I asked if I could borrow the tape and I haven't stopped listening to Led Zeppelin since...

This one of my favorite LZ songs, I love the chanty style in which he sings the verses. I’d drive around just playing this and the next one, Four Sticks (y’all will like that one) over and over. Check the lyrics to this song, they’re great.

Yeah, Misty Mountain Hop is my ringtone... "Why ... don't ... you ... take ... a ... good ... look ... at ... your ... self ... and ... de ... scribe ... what ... you ... see?" *_"AND BABY, BABY, BABY, DO YOU LIKE IT?"_* Genius! As for Four Sticks, people often say it's the weakest song on the album, but I absolutely *_LOVE_* it, and you might be the only other person I've seen give it some praise. There's just no other song like it that I know of; it's a drone, and it's got these crazy Lord Of The Rings lyrics, _"rainbow and dawn, strong shields and lore, they can hold the wrath of those who walk, and the boots of those who march, Baby through the realms of time so long ago."_ (I don't know, I've been listening to it for decades but still can't work out what the words ACTUALLY are!?). I suppose you know IV is a great album if people think that is the weakest song? 🤣

Yes, we definitely can't neglect John "Bonzo" Bonham, who was one of the greatest rock drummers of all time, just as Page is one of the greatest guitar players, Plant one of the greatest vocalists, and John Paul Jones, though often unjustly overlooked, is simply an all around musical genius. The next one, Four Sticks, has a great drum rhythm and riff, and Going to California is a cool sort of psychedelic-folk song. Then comes one of my favorite Zeppelin songs, When the Levee Breaks, which is based on an old blues song, but which they totally Zepplified.

Great song and glad you enjoyed it. It has a very different and very cool vibe. "Misty Mountain Hop" was written by Page, Plant and Jones. Plant said the lyrics are "about a bunch of hippies getting busted, about the problems you can come across when you have a simple walk in the park on a nice sunny afternoon. In England it's understandable, because wherever you go to enjoy yourself, 'Big Brother' is not far behind." The song goes on to talk about the desire to leave all of that and urban life behind, "So I'm packing my bags for the misty mountains Where the spirits go now, Over the hills where the spirits fly." Plant once said that he missed the "misty mountains of Wales" and he eventually bought a home near there, although on England's side of the border. Some people think the title is in reference to Misty Mountain in The Hobbit, but I tend to think it's those mountains in Wales. Could be both. I'm not sure but I think the other guys, or at least Bonham, might have been singing back up on this one. Thanks, and see ya on the next one. :) Edit: It will be fun to hear what Olivia thinks of other LZ songs once she has had a chance to watch the reactions you've done.

Killer response! This song, as do many of their songs, takes time to grow on you. Expecting to hear a song with regular time signature, cadence, etc and then hearing this kinda weirds out the brain! When Presence came out in 76, 9th grade, still have my pink 8 track...I was , not disappointed, but confused and had to put it down for a while. Came back w a different mindset and now it's almost my favorite. Been in the Tacoma for about a month now! Four Sticks is very unique, too! rock AND roll

There was one one Led Zeppelin song that ever had another vocalist besides Robert Plant, “The Battle Of Evermore” on Led Zeppelin 4. The singer was legendary English folk/rock vocalist Sandy Denny, who was extremely popular and considered to be one of the best female vocalists that Britain ever produced. There are also no backup singers on any Led Zeppelin song. It just goes to show how great they were when most people don’t even notice that it’s just Robert Plant singing.

Hello there - is it spelled Alivia? Or is that a typo? Regardless! Welcome back! Robert has said this was about a "love-in" during the hippie era that was broken up by police. In concert, he would say (paraphrasing) that "This song is about what happens when you get caught with rolling papers in your pocket". According to Jimmy: "We were just playing around and suddenly I came up with the opening part of 'Misty Mountain Hop' and then we were off. Jonesy put the chords in for the chorus and that would shape it up. We used to work pretty fast." I love this song from the different cadence of the singing to the slicing guitar riff to the flurry of drums. It's so energetic, you can't help but move to it.

A lot of people don't know that "back in the day" there were multiple tracks laid down on songs. This gets one singer sounding like he's got other guys sing with him in harmony. But in fact it's him singing in different pitch Same with guitars and that's why IMO most studio music is better than the live counterparts. Black Sabbath is one such example because Iommi laid down some of the most incredible tracks ever played. They're amazing. If you have not listened to Sabbath yet get to it QUICK!
