Longtime Tampa resident. The area where these pictures are coming from are in a non-evacuation zone. If you're in a non-evacuation zone, the line is that you stay the hell off the roads so that people in greater danger can get out. Damn right nobody expected this. And would one of you geniuses please tell me how 22,000,000 people are going to evacuate the peninsula in three days, and where they're gonna go?

Seems people do not know the difference, these are floods from the rain not the storm surge, these people stuck are dummies that decided they could drive through after the storm. mostly sight seeing dummies, that want to tour the damage. I have seen it after every storm here in Florida. rubber neckers making life difficult for actual emergency personnel.

You cannot be "blindsided" by flooding when you were told a hurricane was coming. A "safe zone" is the minimum distance a municipality has to give to leave the most emergency services for the areas that will need them the most. If you are told you are in a "safe zone" you might not get the worst of it but you will get some of whatever disaster is headed your way.

My heart breaks for those affected in this horrific act of Mother Nature. Especially those in the Assited Living Home ... It is beyond heartbreaking. I could not imagine having to go through this once let alone twice in 2 weeks. It has never been a dream of mine to visit Florida for many reasons, weather being one...after seeing this yet again, I know Florida will never be a place to visit. I was infuriated to see so many people not leaving before this storm hit...HOWEVER, I then realized not everyone has the ability to do so or the money, they have pets etc... not every hotel/motel will allow animals in... whatever their reasons, I do understand. For those that DID have the ability to go but did not.... I have no sympathy. Good Luck to everyone that truly need it.

Being able to access this terrain takes TIME.

I live in Florida and I lost my home to Charley here in 2004. I live in SWFL by Charlotte Harbor and Charley was a direct hit to us as a Cat 4, we lost our home right in front of us and had no power for six weeks. We just had Helene two weeks ago and my Mom’s home and salon flooded so they came to stay with me last night. We lost power overnight but somehow someway got it back today. A few times we almost lost windows. Her house is flooded a second time and it has to be totaled. Losing two homes to hurricanes in less than twenty years is hard to digest. The saving grace is that because our small town has been through this before, including my high school being blown to bits four days after my freshman year and our whole town of Punta Gorda being flattened and taking almost a decade to rebuild, we at least knew how to prepare. Some of us couldn’t evacuate (mostly for financial reasons - I have a three year old son and could not afford to not work through Tuesday and my Mom’s salon has been here 25 years so she had to prepare it as she’s responsible for four other stylists having a place to earn a living), so we had to bunker down together in places we knew were safer. I noticed that people from here were less panicked, although we feel serious PTSD from Charley. But we were more prepared ahead of time with gas, water, non perishable foods, batteries, lights, cell charger banks, etc. We know not to hoard. After Charley, we couldn’t get gas for almost a month and had to go out of town to get it, so we all knew to gas up beforehand this time, but it was bad to see some people filling up entire tanks and emptying the gas stations here as early as Tuesday. I saw many out of state plates acting the worst. I understand people were scared but it was a far worse panic and attitude than I’ve seen in my decades here. People weren’t nice about it either. Luckily, some non-locals noticed who was from here and asked our advice and we were able to help as best we could. The biggest change I noticed was how alarmist the news was on certain stations (specifically Fox, awful how they incited so much panic). I really respect the meteorologists and news casters who stayed with us all the way through and did their best to report the facts, keep people sane, while still maintaining the severity of the storm. Anyone writing comments or sharing posts with misinformation should be checked and realize these are our lives, our homes, our families. This fake news is truly damaging and puts people in a state of panic. I give credit to our state agencies for being prepared this time. It was unbelievable and almost unheard of for my area to get power back so fast, our local shelters were in constant contact, schools did a great job, FPL did great, even Xfinity truly surprised me with their efforts to keep us updated and I somehow never lost service which is one of the scariest things that happened to our town after Charley. No cell service for weeks. So I’m grateful to our state for being prepared this time and thankful for the meteorologists and newscasters who treated this like a human experience rather than a disconnected issue. A news reporter named Dennis was on a lot, I forgot which channel but he really helped calm nerves. Hope everyone made it through okay and just remember, this is not the time to think “every man for himself”. We need our neighbors and need all hands on deck. If you’re able bodied, go help those who aren’t. It makes the difference between years of devastation and a destroyed town and economy vs a disaster we survived. #FloridaStrong
