Love your comments about 2X vs 1X. Had the pleasure, back in the day, to ride with Andreas Hestler on the North Shore - he told me the best thing about 2X was being able to change directly between big and small front rings and make that huge gear jump either going into a steep climb or coming over the top of one. I never really considered the cross-chaining impact but it makes total sense to me. 1X is waaaay over-hyped IMO.
@joshuahunt12102 жыл бұрын
And yet many pros are still racing with 1x rings... I like Chevy trucks by the way. I find their engine is more efficient and lasts longer than the Ford. My dad likes the Ford though, since he prefers the transmission of the Ford.... I hunt with a 270 Winchester but my cousin prefers a .308 Winchester. He likes bigger bullets. I like more speed. I was using a 1x setup before they came out with 1x setups from the factory (removed rings from my 2x). I prefer to have one less thing to think about in our hilly terrain. Truth be told, 2x is more of a pain in punchy climbs and elevation while it's more advantageous for flatter races..... 2x on the road bike all day though.... Also really appreciate Dylan's input. He always puts out great videos!

I would love to see the video regarding saddle position in relation to femur and tibia length, I have went back and forth between 54 and 56 for the past decade and am still not 100% confident I or my bike fitter are any closer to the ideal setup. Congratulations on the race and the channel, the best in the business!
@adanielweaver4 жыл бұрын
Squirt for the win. I am totally sold on it as well, especially how long it lasts. I used to have to lube every ride but now can go two or three between applications. However, not sure about applying it mid race. It says on it specifically to allow it to fully dry before you use it. You want the wax on the chain without the water to attract grit. Seems like adding squirt mid ride just gives the chain more of a chance to attract grit while it is drying.
@workingguy-OU8124 жыл бұрын
In the low-humidity environment that seemed to be, it may still work as intended. I watched another race-coverage video from a racer who also stated that, by the middle of the race all of his chain lube was gone. One has to do something in that situation.
@whip1134 жыл бұрын
There is the ideal setting, then there is "better than nothing". The excess on the outside of the chain doesn't do much to lube the chain though, its what wicks into the rollers that matters.

Just a suggestion that is easily provable, Having your saddle forward lessens the amount of quad muscle use and isolates the muscle you do use, tiring it out quicker. It also makes for a shorter power stroke and limits the use of the saddle as an anchor. You should do a FTP test with your saddle back placing the saddle center at 73°, and don't forget to lower it. If the stem needs to be shortened below 60mm the bike is too big. I've seen the article on moving the saddle forward for aero but then you have to raise it, raising your whole body into the air, increasing the bend at the waist. It also ties up your hips and thighs when bent over so far. Saddle placement and rider position over the BB shouldn't be determined by the length of your femur. Checkout Keith Bontrager, the myth of KOPS. But everybody's different.
@peteranderson69353 жыл бұрын
I'm with Dylan on this one, I've changed all my bikes for in-line seat posts after trying it on my track bike. More torque, better cadence, just felt smoother. Can use more of the saddle as well.

Great video Dylan! Love that article on VeloNews about 1x drag. To drop some more weight, you should get a Quarq Dub crank which you can move your power meter over to. They are about $199 now and considerably lighter than almost anything else out there. I used to run SPD on my road shoes but felt it added a good bit to stack to the shoes and didn't like that. I'll have to check out those egg beaters adapters, they look lower. I know many are talking about your bike size, I have looked and there are several studies on seat tube angle and almost always the crazy steep seat tube angle is faster but usually it's a position that cannot be held for long periods (20 minutes).

dude, the aero cost of that second ring is circa 10 watts, and that's over the whole course. Also there's been research into the weight of shoe's and their influence upon performance and basically there isn't any significant measurable amount ( i seem to recall the that a few hundred grams equated to approx 0.002 watts or something ridiculous ), except in aerodynamics of the profile.

Hey Dylan, nice vid and setup ! Few questions : Do you put tubeless sealant with your tubolight inserts ? If yes, which one ? Do you know the rolling resistance numbers of the specialized pathfinder tires ? I checked on bicyclerollingresistance website and couldn't find them. Thanks
@againthebegin4 жыл бұрын
BRR hasn’t tested them. He’s been slow to the game with gravel tires and worse yet is testing a lot of smaller sizes which aren’t that helpful. I think I’ve seen most or all of the tests out there, and the only data on Pathfinder I’ve seen is from a German magazine, and it only tested the 38mm size. That said...It did come out pretty well on rolling resistance, about three watts slower than the fastest, the Continental Terra Speed. 22.1W for Conti, 25.2 for Pathfinder. The Conti is the fastest thing going in a lot of tests, at least for a real tire with some protection against flats, but it measures small, usually about 38-39mm for the “40” size, depending on your wheels. So if you need more volume -- and this course absolutely did -- Pathfinder 42 is a good choice. I ran one in rear and a WTB Resolute in front for a little more bit. Both measure out at 43mm-plus on my wheels.

Interesting stuff, especially the tyre insert and how low you drop your tyre pressure. I don’t like the soggy feeling you get when the tyres have very little pressure, especially if you hit a rock and you can feel it hit the rims as the tyres deflect. I wonder if this in some way goes towards counteracting this.

Loved this, but I do have one disagreement - unless you have immaculate timing with breaking going downhill, I've found the 700x38 Pathfinders to be extremely unpredictable and squirrelly on loose over hard. They may be great on flat gravel and pavement, but they have terrible traction both going up and going down on gravel surfaces.

Great video and detail explanation. I like your pedal and shoes combo. I rarely see the eggbeaters being used outside of the Crankbrothers sponsored riders. Even if they are extremely light, shed mud the best and I find them also easiest to clip in and out of.
