Thank you for calling it a coop instead of a "Tractor". Tractor the word has roots in Latin meaning, to pull. In English it means "that thing that pulls". Too often any small pen regardless of having wheels is called a tractor wrongly. This goes back to non-English speaking American farmers having a lack of vocabulary with English speakers. It's similar to Australians calling all chickens a "Chuck" which is a specific breed.

Instead of just saying "No" you should teach it as a command. I taught my dog "leave it" followed by "heel" and it works great! He usually won't even approach food on the ground without permission. When he does and I tell him to leave it, he even automatically heels now! You might've already thought of this, but a behavior specialist might be worth looking into! More often then not our animals behaviors are just a reaction to their experience of us. A specialist probably focuses as much on retraining the human as the dog 😂 Edit: I hope this didn't come across badly! I think you provide a great home for all your animals 😊

Hey Morgan I have a comment/anecdote about my own dog, not a livestock guardian, and his prey instinct in chasing the dirt bike. It’s cute and fun and a great way to expel energy. But soon enough, my dog felt that anytime a motorized vehicle with loud exhaust was heard, it was his time to chase and play. Consequently, he would lose his mind for the ingrained desire to chase, and grew unbearable around the dirt bikes. This led to us getting rid of the bikes to prevent him chasing after engines heard say off in the distance. Not that this would happen to you and Abby, just wanted to share an experience I’ve had that could help in training!

I love Victoria and I think she's an an amazing dog trainer, but I find that using balanced dog training has worked personally far better for me and my SDit. I don't know what you mean by saying they can't replace training. Do you think Abby might be more human focused because she spent a full week doing a road trip where she got to really be close to a human, which was then followed by your training that separated her from the animals quite a bit? My theory is that Toby's formative years may have had more exposure to animals throughout, and that your attempt to avoid the stress of flying may have overly focused Abby's attention on humans thanks to that great doggycourier you found. It was after all her first time away from home, and instead of getting to spend it watching the animals for most of her time, she got to experience a human in a car.

The problem with ur idea is even if that was true witch it could be to a certain point. Her first few months was on a farm outside as a guard dog before she went to the farm 1 week isn't gonna fully turn that. You can say that made her more affectionate with people that's very possible but 1 week wouldn't fully overlap the dogs whole life before Also going with ur theory she doesn't need to love the chickens at all she also doesn't need to love humans less honestly it's her prey drive that brings the issues that prey drive would be there rather she loves humans or not that's definitely genetic For example i grew up with a sheltie he never was once on a farm in his 17yrs of life didn't even see a sheep yet he would heard me and keep my 5 - 8 year old self in the yard by using those instincts. Abby is far form the same level as my sheltie was but it's the same thing going on there. Back to the point it dont look like Toby cares about them at all he's more bonded to the Cats Abby and Morgan then the chickens the reason he Defends them is because he's territorial the reason he dont eat them is not because he cares about them he just don't have a high prey drive to want to eat them the chickens are just part of the land hes protecting take all those birds out Toby would act the same remember a chicken guard dog isn't the same as a sheep guard dog or cow guard dog. You raise a dog with sheep they will become bonded because the sheep will eventually see the dog as one their herd and show the dog affection so they do bond chickens won't do that If I was Morgan I'd think about moving Abby in with the cows and seeing how she does and try looking for another dog with a very low prey drive for the birds

I learned years ago that buying a puppy is a gamble but I never realized how much of a gamble until I watched your experience with Abby. You did everything possible to guarantee you'd get the temperament you wanted. I'd noticed very early on that she craved your company much more than Toby every had. Being separated from you while she "guards" the animals may not give her the sense of purpose that Toby gets. Killing the chicken could even have been her acting out because of the unwanted separation. Would you consider getting her spayed and keeping her as a family dog who is welcome indoors and then looking for a female dog in the 2 year range who is already has the temperament of a good guard dog?

Morgan, this is the answer right here. I say that as someone having had many dogs in our family. You need to train her one on one. Bring Dottie into a caged area, and every time Abby goes towards her, you pull her back let her know it's not acceptable. You may have to do it multiple times. But she's a dog. She wants to please you. When you're firm, and consistant, she'll understand what she needs to do.

My friends dog is a LGD/herder super mutt, he's a great dog, never hurts the chickens, geese or ducks, they free range and raise their babies around him, he's completely safe around them but his one quirk is that everyday he picks one chicken to chase. It's a different one every day and it's not to kill it, I think he just enjoys bossing it around. He stops when you call him but looks smug about the whole thing. Think Pavlov's theory of classical conditioning. Whether it was rough play or instinctual hunting, Abby's incident with the white chicken's sister was rewarding - she now has that positive association, hence the hyper focus on the remaining white chicken when she sees it. You need to think of something that when she alerts on the white chicken, there is a distracting stimulus (positive or negative - either will work).

I offered to buy Abby back, reimburse him $3000 for the cost he paid to ship her to him, reimburse him for the hernia surgery and pay all expenses to ship her back to me. Morgan declined my offer and said he wanted to keep Abby and to get $4000. I was very disappointed in his reply. That does not help Abby. It’s very obvious that Morgan does not have the skills or experience to train Abby and that she is not suited for his farm. She should not be locked up by herself all the time. That is causing her problems. None of Abby’s litter mates have these problems, nor do her parents. Her parents are excellent LGD’s and until Abby came to Morgan’s farm she spent all of her time with other Maremmas and livestock. She was never isolated like she is now. As Abby’s breeder I want what’s best for Abby, for Morgan and for Morgan’s stock. I truly believe what’s best is for her to come back to me and I am willing to pay the price to make that happen. I would say that abby is showing the exact traits you explained she might have before you even got her. Specifically they work well together. If you can turn Abby's aggressive out there ways into a more herding type trait it would be great with toby who can help you manage the main group and she can round up any stragglers. Another thing I want to mention is blanch who managed to escape was found by abby. This means she and toby do different things at night so while toby guards the parameter she wanders more on the inside which covers an unguarded position in the farm. While toby had a fence line to help him out. No one is on the inside until now. Imagine instead of killing chickens she rounds them into place you will find them in the morning. Something you should look into. Try and turn her bad traits into good ones pretty much.

@Bigbaymonstermare
@Bigbaymonstermare 2 жыл бұрын
@@kimberlycrawmer4257 I actually didn’t say that I thought her hips could be evaluated by running…..someone else did. Even if her parents have excellent hip scores, it doesn’t mean automatically that she’ll have excellent hips herself. But he said four of the litter had congenital hernias, and he alluded that there were issues between him and the breeder regarding transparency and perhaps issues he was unaware of, that he wasn’t at liberty to discuss. From his discussions and videos and comments he’s made, I firmly believe he is going through something with the breeder. I love Abby. She’s adorable and has quite the little personality and she’s not a bad dog. But she is showing traits unbecoming if a livestock guardian dog and I do believe Morgan could benefit from working with a trainer. He’s missing some cues and needs to be a bit quicker at times. You need to catch training cues immediately- I’ve trained horses professionally for years and you have to have consistency, positive reinforcement, but we have something called the “three second rule” where any corrections, praise, etc., must all be caught in those three seconds immediately following the action. I don’t know a huge amount about LGDs, but this seems to be a rougher road than Toby and is showing some herding behaviours and has had those undesirable behaviours towards the leghorn chickens, which is concerning. I always like to say that breeding only gets you so far, it’s like as if your parents went to the Olympics; there’s no guarantee that their children will necessarily have inherited the genes that makes them superior athletes. It’s a combination of genetics, training and temperament. When you breed horses, a lot of people put too much emphasis on the stallion and not the mare. They put their so so or nothing special mare up against a premium stallion thinking they’ll get something that’s mostly like the stallion, but 9/10 the temperament is something they inherit from their dam, _not_ their sire. I’ve had dogs my whole life (except for right now, but that’s another story) , they kind of go hand in hand with owning horses. I’ve trained my dogs myself and I’m proud to say my dogs were always well behaved, and had a grab bag of tricks and had exceptional recall, and I rarely ever thought about leashes. Due to some life events, when we got our German Shepherd, she wasn’t socialised with other dogs during her formative years, and only ever warmed up to two dogs for the rest of her life (however, she was the best horse dog ever - we had a horse ball, a Jolly Ball, a heavy duty ball with a handle, and my thoroughbred used to toss the ball and she would retrieve it and they would play fetch for so long I used to have to confiscate the ball from them because the dog would have played until she dropped! Anyway, from my reading and research and experience, a lot of people believe that like with horses, most bitches pass along their temperament to their pups. Temperament is a combination of genetics, upbringing, influence from other dogs like their mother and even litter mates to some extent, but as I said, it seems the belief is that they pick up most of their temperament from mom. If Abby truly has issues that will make her a less than ideal candidate as a LGD, like chasing birds and even killing that bird, regardless if it was through play or actively seeking it out, herding animals, etc., I’m wondering if she’ll pass that along to her offspring? Only time will tell, she’s still young and has so much growing up to do still.

With Abby I would put her on a leash and do one on one training separate with dotty. Get her associated with her. Since she’s well food motivated take advantage of it. I think it’s literally cuz Dotty is traumatized and is afraid so she acts as prey as well. You need to do this for both animals. Abby definitely needs more work and I wouldn’t write it off as a white chicken problem.

So I would take her (on leash) up to one display and tell her “it’s okay”, to “sniff it”, and “it’s fine”. I acted as calm as possible too, no excitement just observation only. Abby should have been sent to the farm at 10-12 weeks old and raised with the chickens/ducks to have avoided any attacks. Frustrates me. And as of now from what I’ve seen she may not be the best match for his farm especially if he doesn’t plan on really getting on her about chasing or her “ prey drive” 😕

Overdoing it might make her more placid for a time but it skirting around the root of the problem. It's a hunting issue now, not an energy issue. If she was playing, maybe? I want Abby back because I think she is being treated unfairly. I offered to buy Abby back, reimburse Morgan $3000 for the cost he paid to ship her to him, reimburse him for the hernia surgery and pay all expenses to ship her back to me. I think Abbie has the makings of a herding dog vs purely a guardian. I think that may be why she loves running with the ATV. I also believe Toby is so good with everything on the farm bc you got him at a much younger age. With your relatively unique type of farm I believe you should’ve gotten Abbie at a younger age. Bc then you would’ve had the chance to correct any such behavior before she was truly large enough to chase down & truly harm any adult birds. When dealing with dogs who get so large & powerful around birds as fragile as chickens it’s best to start as early as possible with exposure & training. Also by staying with her siblings for so long she became accustomed to frequent rough playtimes which likely included both chasing & pouncing. Even when her & Toby play…I’ve noticed he tends to mainly want to wrestle like he has grown up doing with you when y’all play. While Abbie clearly wants him to chase her, let her chase him & she tends to jump at him much more. Which is *exactly* how she likely tried to play with the chicken she ultimately ended up killing. I still don’t believe she killed that chicken on purpose or it would’ve been far more bloody from forceful bites. Rather I personally believe she tried to play with it in the same rough & tumble way she was accustomed to playing with her siblings, mother & other dogs for so long. I know the farm she was born on had free range chickens but…with her siblings/other dogs to play with those chickens were less interesting by comparison. Plus I imagine those chickens would give the puppy area plenty of space whenever they got to playing. By contrast on your farm Toby(& you) refuse to truly play while in the main yard or anywhere there is a group of birds. Which from even the brief videos you showed of her with her siblings wasn’t the case at that farm as they were all playing with chickens around them. 🤷🏻‍♀️ It’s just something that she likely finds difficult to adjust to after spending so long at her birth farm. Versus Toby who didn’t have to make such an adjustment. That being said…I do understand your reasoning for believing that getting Abbie at an older age would be a good thing. But I just don’t think it worked out in her favor on your specific farm. 😕 Of course that just means lots of extra training & oversight to correct any bad/negative behaviors & that you likely won’t be able to fully trust her loose 24/7 until she gets much closer to the 2yr old mark when most of that extra puppy energy ends. I *do* believe she will ultimately make a great working dog for your farm eventually. I especially believe she could be fantastic with the cattle as your herd grows & they become less fearful of you. - As for why only the white chickens… I would say it was bc it was the same color as the siblings she played with except that the chicken she killed was the ONLY chicken out at that time. Now whether she truly wants to kill your other white chicken or if she simply remembers how fun & exciting it was to play with the first white chicken…I don’t know. But I’m leaning towards the 2nd option. Mainly bc if it was truly the fact that she got a “taste” for chicken her nose tells her that ALL the chickens smell the same & thus would taste the same. Thus why I think there has to be more to it than simply that. Which is why her possibly viewing white chickens as the ultimate interactive & exciting toy/plaything would make sense IMO. Dogs don’t see colors as vibrantly as we do so all the other chickens likely look similarly dark…making the lone white chicken stand out more as well making it catch her eye more easily too. Thus making it more difficult for her to resist the urge to chase & play with it. Those are my thoughts on it at least.🤷🏻‍♀️

Morgan, if you get another puppy, perhaps pursue getting one from Toby's line and get her at a younger age as had been the original plan. Abby does not seem like a great candidate to breed for several reasons, are you considering having her spayed? That seems like the best way forward and that new puppy would be more like Toby in all likelihood.

Teach Aby "Leave it" to change her attention span on something rather than "Sit" as sit is just a temporary stall, learning leave it and you carry on with what you're doing will teach her that paying whatever her target is doesn't need to happen and to be "Normal".

I have a friend who trains dogs. He says some are hard to break of a bad habit. If it is a bunch of things you probally need a different dog. If it's just one thing the dog can't seem to understand he uses a shock collar for just that problem. No worse than training your cattle to the electric fence, they learn quickly.

I want to agree that she thinks its a "litter mate" but unfortunately she knows its not a dog. They are smarter than you may think but simply because of that well executed sniffer they are supplied with.. The pray drive just kicks in when she notices the chicken reacts to her ever so faster movements with each step creating more energy between her and the "white chickens". I've been training and observing dogs for about 11 years now and this behavior is unfortunately something that will just have to slowly be a training and improve situation, shes still young, new and definitely quick to learn. Some patients and A LOT more exercise with time to grow and shell be a perfect livestock guardian dog with a fantastic owner!

Question: why not fence off the trees, and free range the cattle? Allows you to use a more permanent water set up, cows will migrate on their own, trees will be safe.

He's doing rotational grazing which has a few benefits over free ranging like increased drought resistance for the land
@dairyfarmer726
@dairyfarmer726 2 жыл бұрын
@@excuseyou1526 I have never seen anyone do rotation grazing at such a ridiculously small scale. We usually do several acres at a time. But if it makes Morgan happy to spend a lot of time setting up and tearing down grazing lots, so be it. We are too busy on our dairy farm to be "piddling around". Also, we bring our livestock into the barn every night and let them out in the morning after milking.
@excuseyou1526

@@dairyfarmer726 I assume you two have wildly different incentives which dictate how you set up your operations though. You probably want maximal dairy production for minimum work, which makes perfect sense in a context of a regular dairy farm. That however might not lend itself for the most engaging content. Morgan benefits from daily pasture moves because it gives him a lot of daily content to upload to his social media, which is the primary revenue source for him. That's my read anyway.
@dairyfarmer726
@dairyfarmer726 2 жыл бұрын
@@excuseyou1526 I think your assessment is probably correct. I had not considered Morgan's need for KZbin content, which upon further thought, does seem to be his number one priority. Our focus is strictly on the welfare of our herd and the running of our business.

My uncle trained his work dogs (sheep/cattle) to jump onto and ride on the back of his atv, to avoid having them chase him. Sometimes he has to swap dogs out at lunchtime (or they get injured), much easier than walking them back to their pen to exchange dogs. He discouraged kids on the ranch from trying to get his work dogs to chase them too....he really didn't want kids playing with them anyway - he has two house dogs that are for that (belly rubs, chasing balls, etc.).

Love Toby. Just not feeling Abby no matter how much Morgan gushes over her. She's pretty wilful and Morgan's energy is too weak to manage her. I should say "too soft" instead of "too weak". Morgan isn't weak, just too soft to be a pack leader for Abby.
