When I was in public school there was a girl in a wheelchair who had a 'guide/help' dog. At the time, I didn't think anything of it, but now as an adult and being aware of everything, I recognize that my grade 8 teacher would do the baby voice and would pet him, and unfortunately for the girl, the dog ended up growling and I believe snapping at the teacher because of this, and the school denied the girl to bring the dog to school after that. I remember the girl and the girls family being really upset and angry over this and the school saying that the dog was aggressive and stuff, but in reality, it was entirely the teachers fault for not being aware of the etiquette of guide dogs and talking and touching them. Sad.

I feel like the special educators were more at fault than the teacher. Teachers aren't familiar with all disabilities, so when a child enters the school, the special education department has a responsibility to educate the staff

As a Mom myself if my child had a guide dog, I would have a meeting with the teachers before my child started in their class and educate them on any needs my child had including the guide dog. My son does have severe ADHD and I always meet with his teachers before the school year starts and explain what helps him and what can trigger him to behave in a way that could interfere with his education. Not an excuse for the teacher but yes both the parents and the school should've made sure the teacher was educated on guide dogs.

Awwww the teacher had no business touching the girls 🐕‍🦺!! The 🐕‍🦺 was probably telling the teacher to back off and not bother him because 🐕‍🦺had work to do... the girl was probably too young to voice to not touch her 🐕‍🦺

My dad suggested I follow you... He was suddenly being recommended KZbin videos about Service Dogs, probably because he's been secretly learning about what my dog(s) do! Anyway, when you mentioned the custom guide handle sign, I knew immediately it was a Patience and Love. Love her gear so much! I've wanted to start a channel focused on my Service Dogs--one retired, one in training--and mental health awareness, and you're definitely inspiring me to follow through 👍

Caitlyn Debauch there’s actually a difference. A service dog has specific tasks they need to perform for the owner, and they are required to go through years of training and certifications. They are also allowed to be anywhere. As for ESA’s, they are not required to go through training and they are not allowed in placed where dogs are not allowed(as for service dogs are). The only difference between an ESA and regular animal is that they are protected by the home pet law (don’t know the specific name of the law) which means if you live somewhere where pets are not allowed, your ESA is allowed(even a dorm room, my friend has one in her dorm).

I don't get why people feel they have the right to touch and talk to any dog or sometimes even small children without asking permission first. If someone did it to them, they would consider it harassment.

I'm sorry the dog didn't work out andthe teacher shouldhave been taught or known bettter but a properly socailized/trained service dog should never get agressive they may ot nessarily "enjoy' something and its the responsablity of the handler to read therer dogs and know when there thresh hold its getting reached but but being cooed at petted unexpectantly, or paws stepped on etc even hit in the ass or kidded in the face are allthe reality of life as a service dog, (we of course "check in to make sure our dogs are okay (give them a minute lots of encouragement checking for injuries etc)( you of course don't allow it to keep happening but if the teacher was just "talking" and "petting" the dog that should not have been enough to cause it growl and snap. sadly though there are alot of programs now (less back then) that pair su par dogs with desperate parents willing to do anything forthere child. IMO 13 is the YOUNGEST a service dog should beconsidered to be paired .it takes a lot to handle and steward specifically in a school setting

Molly Burke Thank you for this informative video. I am considering an emotional support dog for my anxiety and I may possibly need a hearing dog in the future. I have a question, say I get an esd dog and then a few years later need a hearing dog. Will I be able to have both or will I need to give up my esd dog? I have ADD and I'm hard of hearing. I appreciate your closed captions, but I agree with DB, the music throughout is pretty distracting. Thank you for listening.

Thank you for your video. I am legally blind and have other health issues which require more customization in training for mobility and psychiatric problems (PTSD and panic attacks). My first service dog Lucy (small statur) ed German shrpherd) was trained as a guide dog and learned other tasks as I worked her. (Only thing she didn't "learn" was pulling my chair, I haven't used my chair in 2.5 yrs but know that I will most likely be using one again in my future) Lucy was retired in 2013 when her hearing and sight became problematic. (She's 15 years old) In 2011 I began training my chihuahua Sammy for PTSD and panic problems. (I wasn't in my chair until early 2013 around the time Lucy retired).Obviously Sammy's too small for mobility, brace or pulling...and my degenerative disc disease on my cervical and lumbar spine is worsening, this means that I will be back in my chair in the coming months (I'm hoping for years but I know that's not realistic). So, due to my special needs I purchased a chocolate lab pup mid-June (she's 7 weeks at the time of this post) and I will be having her and I train for my specific needs; bracing, assisting if I fall (cervical spine is compressing my spinal cord which causes me to stumble as if I'm drunk as well as get severe vertigo), pulling in a wheelchair, as well as offer grounding during a panic attack or PTSD episode. She will also learn some guide work but that will not be her key focus. I'm going to document her training on her channel: TrainingSDBailey and her facebook page of the same name. Again, thank you for your videos. I hope to see more on your adventures with Gallop!

I live in ND, I can attest that the salt can burn dogs paws. I need to get boots for my SD to protect his feet from salt, ice, and hot concrete. In winter when I get home from a trip I always wash his feet. Aloe vera straight from the plant on his paws every couple weeks helps keep his paws healthy and moisturized without making them too soft/easily damaged.

Hey Molly the harness for service dogs link does not work. Do you know why? Have you got any other harness' to recomend? I would like to know cause I'm laying in an application for getting what in Denmark is called a service dog for the mentally ill (but I think you guys call it an ems dog?). It's to help me with my anxiety and anxiety attacks. I do have a kinda bad sight and I can't figure out what distance is to different stuff. Also I've got moving blurred stuff in my eyes and I've got strange shadows that come and go also I sometimes got colours floating around. I've been to the ophthamologist who says that nothings wrong with the eye but of course she can't say if soemthing is wrong in my nervous system behind my eyes in my head. I've had this since I fell off my old horse 2 weeks ago, should I tell this in my application? Thank you Molly you're such a strong person I really do admire you.

I'm fairly sure they are tested, as a puppy, to see if they want to learn and are ok with the training harness, they get trained, if they just don't act interested or don't stay focused, they get adopted out so they need to enjoy the training to progress to being chosen for a blind person.

@rilee5275
@rilee5275 8 жыл бұрын
When a guide dog is wearing its harness, pedestrians should not distract the dog at all. The guide dog realizes it is working when its harness is on. If you distract a dog while it is wearing its harness, you may break some of its training and put the handler in an unsafe position. When a guide dog is not wearing its harness, it is like any other family pet. The dog may play, bark, and do anything else any pet would do.
@RedpandaUndead
@RedpandaUndead 8 жыл бұрын
Once the service dog is considered "off duty" by the owner then it is in a pedestrian's best interest to ask if they can pet and interact with the dog, just like with any other animal. You don't go petting a random person's pet.. Or well you shouldn't go petting a dog you don't know. You should always ask the owner because some handlers will work their dogs "naked" and that can be confusing for those who don't have SDs if the dog is working or not, or if it is an SD at all. Hope that helps :)
@CologneCarter

Not to touch or distract the trained dog is not the first thing that pops in your head when you see a man with a dog is special gear. It should be more spoken out (for the younger ones and still... I'm watching this video simply because I'm curious about training dogs ♥@♥ I also think that #MollyISaDolly is very elegant ♥@♥). Thanks to all the comments I know feel double embarrassed, since I recalled an episode of when I was 9 or 10, a few seconds after I got my very first tiny bit of explanation. Of course the math of : dogs LIKE work, you don't learn it in school because that would be a "dive" into Mythology not Biology ("they give us milk and wool and we work so that they spend the night in a shelter" is all that seems relevant to the science of killing #BoringEarth). Dogs like work because they are naturally over excitable, it motivates their ego, that's exactly why they sometimes seem to be begging for attention. Not to mention how that's kinda (or for real) very personal... between you and the cosmos, who happens to be the only possessor of LIFE. So, people "jumping" over your pet might be an offense only if you got reasons to believe they had that motivation, I mean it like "What's the point of calling it a member of the family if he's not allowed to socialize". I also believe that because of these general #FatLines of ownership of joy/life + information retention, we have an issue living with other creatures, macro or micro.. We should have moved to #HappyMonkeys #HappyRaccons #HappyAnything... at least for this kind of service, a long time ago. #JustBeingCreative

A guide dogs job it to protect their owner. The dog keeps their owner away from harm, that's priority. If the owner is blind, they could easily get robbed jumped etc. Mainly if the dog feels that you're a threat they might attack and that's not what you want. They also might feel like you will take them away from the owner and Leave them abandoned. Correct me if I'm wrong but this is how my friends guide dogs works.
@kaseywhite5887
@kaseywhite5887 9 жыл бұрын
Another reason is it can be a distraction for the dog and if anything happens to the owner (usually) it's blamed on you :/
@rilee5275

If a guide dog is wearing its harness, it is working. A pedestrian should not pet the guide dog because it is a distraction. If the guide dog is encouraged to behave as it would without its harness on, it can break its training or create habits for the dog. Distracting a guide dog may also put the dog's handler in an unsafe position. If a guide dog is not on its harness, it can behave like a family pet. You may pet the dog, when it does not have its harness on. The dogs are trained to know that the moment they put on their harness, they are working.

Tierra Nauman this is because typically people under the age of 16 or 18 do not have an active enough lifestyle to warrant having a guide dog. Usually children are not really in need of this kind of assistance. They are typically going to school and small events, not busy cities or things like that.
