I got cursed out for being BLACK and making that exact same statement about the Ferguson situation I asked "why is it when black on black crimes happening black ppl are so quick to yell #freesuchnsuch but when a cop do black ppl tear a whole city down?" I also stated "That its fucked up that black ppl seem to be OK with black on black crime" I was called an uncle tom, a sell out, and a few others.

The percentage of black men/people getting killed by law enforcement is pales in comparison to the number of black men/people being killed by their own everyday. If there is an exoneration of the 27% of black men/people being killed by police, what is going to be done about the other 63%? These black kids are honestly growing up in war stricken, 3rd world type environments that don't involve the police.

lilbaby245 Its more about injustice than the numbers. A black man that kills another black man is going to jail and that is that. A cop who wrongfully kills a black person gets off scott free almost all the time. Like I said there is a difference.
@dnicole42369 жыл бұрын
Besides segregation amongst races in the US playing a factor in that a lot of the cops who have killed black people (most of the time who are unarmed) are not indicted and are protected by the law. Whereas as a black person who kills another black person goes right to jail

Dominique Benton exactly and this is why I hate when people bring up black on black crime. Honestly we care about it all but sometimes topics like racial profiling and injustice have to take center stage.
@valgar2000vg9 жыл бұрын
Ms. Dineva, I hope you are open to views that oppose your own. Keeping in mind that if, according to the 2010 Census, there are 38.9 million Americans who identify as black, then there are 38.9 million ways to be black. Apparently, we both watched last night's Scandal episode and have much praise to offer Shonda Rhimes, Zahir McGhee (episode writer) and Tom Verica (episode director). However, we took away very different messages from the guilty cop's monologue. IMHO, the speech crystalized some of cop culture's negative views about blacks: infantilizing POC by saying we need to be protected from ourselves and generalizing that we have no respect for authority/police. All of this coming from a "fictional" police officer whose prejudice views led him to shoot and kill an unarmed, innocent young man. He then proceeds to frame this boy with a knife from a white criminal (whom the cop enters a conspiracy with, lets go and is later apprehended in the commission of another crime!) and colludes with other officers to hide evidence that would expose his crime. Olivia is labelled as incompetent by the officer for having gone native and "failing to do her job". The officer fails to take responsibility for his CRIMES, has a mini pity party for himself, no remorse, and is spittingly, literally, angry that his cover up failed. Yet, somehow this translates to empathy for this fictional police officer and scorn towards protestors? It was MLK who said "A riot is the language of the unheard." Peace.

I love how you framed your argument. You are right, we did walk away receiving 2 different messages. However, after reading your thoughts, i see your point. I didn't see it like that at first. I guess all the complexities of the episode made it so great.

Here's the issue with cops killing blacks vs black/black crime: what is the likelihood that cops know with 100% certainty that one black man killed another, yet they wait weeks to arrest him or wait MONTHS to question if a crime has even been committed at all? No one is OK with black/black crime; there is a system in place to bring justice to victims in those situations, but the same system does not work when it's a police officer behind the gun. Police officers are sworn to protect and serve the community as agents of the government, so a justice system failing to actually pursue justice in cases of cops killing citizens effectively turns these incidents into public policy. There's a difference between street crime and government-sanctioned executions.
@ericaf79459 жыл бұрын
I get your review but also the fact that some police officers have a superiority complex. Because they work in our communities there's an expectation that they should be reverenced and respected even if they don't treat us with respect. I think we all would get from the episode whatever experience we have had with law enforcement. Great job on your review. Keep up the great work

I loved last night's episode. I was moved to tears, honestly. I do think they took some liberties and based it more on what SHOULD happen, not what actually does in cases like these. For example, we all know that in reality, Clarence (the victim's father) would have been dead right along with his son after that scene with the shot gun. Second, as soon as cops pull that "I feared for my life" line, it's over. There's no cop behind bars or justice for the victim. But did y'all peep at the end, the cop didn't even go to jail for killing the boy! His charges were "altering evidence, perjury, filing a false police report, and conspiracy to obstruct justice"
@lucianbrown92049 жыл бұрын
PLEASE REMEMBER.....when situation arises and someone goes to court for doing you wrong...the wrong thing to do is to make a case for them not getting the charges you want....the goal is to get them behind bars long as possible...emotions in some settings blurr the goal...it's not settling either it's understanding the world and how it works...if I may open a can of worms...what do you think Nicole Brown's family thinks of OJ being behind bars...happy or unfulfilled?
@brunette12349 жыл бұрын
Lucian Brown I get your point, but to me it was very telling of our so called "justice system." You can kill a Black person, but it's the other things you were charged with that will get you locked up. And I'm sure the Nicole Brown's family were satisfied getting OJ behind bars, I'm 100% sure they would have been even happier if his charges were directly related to her murder.

No one forced that man or Darren Wilson to become police officers. I'm sure that most police officers want to SERVE AND PROTECT citizens. However, there are others who join the police force to exert authority and power over others. The kid was shot not because he was attacking the officer or resisting arrest. He was shot because he was sassing him. Are we supposed to bow and scrape and not make eye contact with officers?

Seriously dude, I don't even know you in real life and I still love you! You took the words out of my mouth! It's so beautiful to see such a culminative moment as was seen last night. I couldn't stop acknowledging to myself how much of a genius Shonda is tackling this the way she did. To wait until the dust from last year's events begins to settle to bring a more universal perspective to a national audience really was too extraordinary for words. Thank you for using your platform in moments like this to bridge the gap between those who are in the "trenches" and those in positions of power who have to be more calculating about the stands they take.

Courtney B. Vance was incredible!! However, I have to disagree with in regards to the view point of the white officer. Nobody asked him to work in the hood. He lived in the suburbs, why couldn't he get a job in the suburbs? His anger towards blacks because they refuse to respect him. His attitude of entitlement is what we face constantly when dealing with officers. I do not believe he was justified in his anger and do not understand how you feel he was as well.

It is SO irritating to continue to hear "why don't African Americans protest when they kill one another?" It's because the person who committed the crime is not released to go on about their lives as if they did not just kill someone. The Black on Black crime is not left unsolved. The police do not just allow the killer to walk away; they killer is usually arrested and charged. The reason for the protests when a white person kills a black is because they are not arrested or even charged sometimes. That's why we protest. No one is saying everything is perfect in the African American community, but the police don't seem to have an issue doing their job when the killer is black.

I absolutely agree with everything said. It's tough when you're one of the few African Americans that agree with statements about our race when it comes from someone of a different background (more so white folks). Whomever wrote the monologue for the white cop deserves an emmy for hitting the nail on the head. It saddens me to know that we as a people don't feel the same outrage when our young men kill each other. Just recently in my city a young mother and her daughter were shot in cold blood ....I haven't seen the black revolutionary marching for this. And another valid point made was the fact that some of us were indeed trained to hate the police. I've always had a soft spot in my heart for the boys in blue because my brother was on the force, and you see it daily how people bash the police for doing a job they won't get their black asses out there to do. But that's a different post for different day.

That episode of Scandal was Written so that we can get some type of Closer. Scandal writers knew in their Hearts that what has been transpiring around the country in regards to police shooting, and NOT getting JUSTICE is absolute horrifying. Which other way to get some type of closer, is to write a script about getting JUSTICE. I thank Shonda and the writers for this Story & ABC for Allowing to be played. Cause we all know that ABC could have shelved that episode.

Us black people do not need the police to protect us from ourselves. That white cop was just trying to justify him framing an innocent black man. I appreciate the writing of this episode exposing how white cops feel that black people should teach their children to respect the white cops no matter how the cops treat them. It was no reason for that cop to kill that man and then frame the man as if he is responsible for his own death.
