I think you articulated very well what makes the villains great in Spiderman, Sandman isn’t just a sand guy, he is the anger that Peter Parker has to let go of, and the forgiveness that he has to embrace, Venom is the ego and jealousy he has to learn to not let override all other emotions, and Harry is the guilt for the way his friendships have been impacted by being Spiderman. It’s interesting to think about how the feelings each villain bring out of him are then enacted against other villains, like how the Venom part of him makes him belittle Harry

You really captured what makes the Raimi trilogy so great. Spider-Man 2, especially, feels like a character study first and superhero movie second. Easily my favourite in the trilogy because half the movie is a grounded drama, fixating on a side to Peter we don't see in the newer films. And when it does fall back on those conventional genre notes, it exceeds on all fronts. The train scene and hospital scene are just masterful and hold up amazingly well by today's standards

I appreciate the dark spiderman "cool" scenes as a representation of how out of touch Peter Parker is with cool. They don't really talk on others reactions much save from Betty Benson but that can be seen as one to sheer confidence, regardless of the quality of the personality. It's iconic and doesn't completely change the character from what we expect. Really well executed, imo.

Your discussion on Zucker/Abrahams and what makes good comedy was spot on. The number one thing that kills a comedy is the complete acknowledgment that they're being funny. If you make a joke, and then act like "haha that was a good joke right" and give the audience a beat to laugh, it just kills any and all humor. Or oftentimes it's like the humor is more in some overreaction to the joke than the actual joke itself. What makes comedy truly hilarious is to take it all 100% seriously, and that's what they were so good at. In Airplane! when they discuss the plane dinner being either steak or fish, when Leslie Nielsen goes "Yes, I remember, I had the lasagna..." there's no eye-popping, eyebrow-raising or any form of acknowledgment that "Oh you silly! That's not part of the menu you doofus!". The conversation just keeps going completely naturally as if nothing happened. I think a lot of comedies go for cheap reaction humor instead of crafting well-written jokes like these guys did.

Have you seen Loaded Weapon 1 and Last Action Hero? Wonderful sendups of the deluge of action films in the 80's and 90's. Honestly, I think people don't acknowledge that films like First Blood, Die Hard, Rocky, etc were all films about characters that overcome the odds and expose a lot of emotions about themselves, and then every sequel was basically a parody of that first one (especially the propaganda heavy Rambo III), but Loaded Weapon 1 and Last Action Hero are a wonderful paring of parody and genuine appreciation for the format

Really like this. I also like funny movies that to connect with people, like on an emotional level too. I feel humor can bring us together. If we can share a laugh, we are on the same page for at least the length of the joke. There can be a beauty in comedy that I feel gets underplayed sometimes. (not knocking a personal preferences/what connects with someone). Also, Top Secret is so underrated

I used to work at a movie/game store in a mall and I would always have Spider-Man 3 playing on one of our TVs. People would make negative remarks about it all the time. Love the video Joel. It’s nice to hear what someone looks for in comfort movies/film. Personally I’d rather a television show like modern family. Even though it can be over the top (especially the constant lying between characters, every episode follows the exact same structure) but, the show always ends with a happy family. The comfort in that show is the envy of having a close bond or a family one day. Which strikes a more personal cord in me despite it being a comfort show. Which I find cool considering you look for movies that take you more so away from reality. I love those kinds of movies too and often look for them for comfort too, but i can also find comfort in something that strikes a personal cord in me.

I have a deep appreciation for films that manage to hit both "tracks". I recently watched Superbad, which is a fucking funny movie but also a really beautiful bromance. On the indie track there's The Little Hours, maybe my favourite comedy of all time, which sneaks up and smashes you in the face in the last minute with just how beautiful it was. Your feature films (the ones I've seen) tend to lean toward the emotional connection, but a lot of your shorter skits really sit in the middle place, largely thanks to the cinematography.

What I love about Raimi's trilogy is they're campy and fun, they're serious but not so serious as to forget it's a movie about a man in spandex called spider man. Yes Marvel has jokes but the entire 'multiverse' is a very serious thing, worth billions. Raimi's are from before superhero movies got super gritty and tried to be the Dark Knight. They're just fun. Great films.

it's hard to talk about comedy because it tickles your brain in a weird way, feels like a shortcut in a way like, you can intellectualize and analyse how tense a movie is or how well written the story might be or how realistic the emotional connections between characters are portrayed, but when you get to the jokes of a movie it's different imo but there's value in that too that's why i like your funny short films so much, there's experimentation and creativity and you can feel it, even when you don't fully understand why it's new & cool & sick in a good way also that's why i'm still unsure whether i agree with the term "absurd" because it seems to be used for so many different things and more often than not it's just about experimentation anyway joel if you got to the end of this comment please pet the doggy and thank you and also anyone else who is near a doggy
