I have occasionally thrifted an item, taken the buttons for myself, replaced the buttons with something functional but less decortive, then returned the item to the thrift store.

I've been collecting and reclaiming so much 100% cotton lately, so it's a breath of fresh air to see fabrics that drape so beautifully or are sheer. I used to dressmake when I was younger and like you saw a fabric and could imagine it made up into a garment. I don't think an appreciation of fabric ever leaves you once you've been bitten by the bug. And buttons. And ribbons. And trims. And .... Love this haul.

There's something about how the last one sounded that was just amazing haha. I grew up in the SCA, where bedding, shower curtains, and drapes were often stolen to make period peasant garb and other fun stuff, I have a very nice vest that's made out of a scrapped couch cushion cover and it's firm enough to add extra support to the back from then. It's super nice to see so much! I'm getting back into sewing and my gran bought me a brand new Singer, so I'm excited to get going, and your videos are super helpful.

What a wonderful haul! I would LOVE to make the beautiful, drapey rayon sheet into a draped 1940s style evening gown.💗💗 I've found all sorts of wonderful sewing notions thrifting over the years but I was ecstatic to find an automatic button holer attachment for my 1950s Pinnock sewing machine that was still in its box and works wonderfully for just £1.50. That was a few years ago now and I'm still so thrilled! I've also had great luck with metal and unusual zips too. I haven't bought anything new for myself except underwear for 3 years now so thrifting is completely essential to me! 😁

I feel so validated when I watch your thrifting videos. I have done this since I was a young person. We didn't have much money, so my mom would take me to thrift stores and yard sales. She was marvelous at making alterations, and made many of our clothes. I now do costuming for High School and local theatre productions and use my stash if "stuff" all of the time. My biggest problem is finding enough room to store my supplies and fabric. Happy Sewing and thank you!

I inherited a button collection that includes very old shell buttons ( a few infant/child size). I estimate at least 200-300 but, mostly modern and in ones or twos. It is still the first place I look (sometimes down that rabbit hole for an hour or more) before going anywhere else. I played with many of them when I was a child (circa 1950s). I hate paying so much for new cheaply made, plastic buttons.

Oooh the tape measure is identical to mine from the seventies. Still measures perfectly, no stretch. Plus, mine is 5/8 inch wide - so handy to know as I stick to that seam allowance width since I learned that way as a teenager at school. I stick to the 5/8 allowance also. I like sewing because it's so relaxing and I rarely have to think about what I'm doing, so I can let my mind wander off to other things. If I had to pay attention the seam allowance widths I'd probably never be able to complete anything properly ever again. And yes that 5/8 tape measure is really help now that I have to draft most of my patterns!

There are many of good resources on the web about it. You take a small sample and put a match (or lighter or other flame source) to it. In a nutshell, non-natural fibers will melt whereas natural fibers will burn into ash. Identifying the exact fibers is more complicated than this, of course, but it's not rocket science either.
