When I bought my Heathkit CG-1006 clock recently, it had options for 'orange' displays; I think there was still a green option, but I don't recall seeing a red option. The orange LED displays produce a color that is darn close to a typical neon glow.

You're correct, "21st century" Heathkit eventually replaced their red option with orange. Perhaps they noticed the lust for neon and wanted to be closer to the GC-1005. My Neo project predated that change, thus the GC-1006 I show at the end originally came with red displays (Kingbright DC56-11EWA) and I have an additional unbuilt GC-1006 with green LEDs (LiteOn LTD-5623AG). I've spent way too much time re-engineering the GC-1006 as well. Have a look at my GC-1006 "Neo" teaser #short. I might buy 3 of the orange to see how they look in the 1005Neo. Any chance you could share the part # of those oranges in your GC-1006? Digikey has some by Rohm... Feel free to PM. Oh, and thanks for the comment! I much enjoy your work as well.
