The same reason that Endeavor is a hero despite his actions, is why we have celebrities around us doing the same actions. The only difference is one gets caught, and the other keeps it hidden from society.

The duality of his character is what makes him so complex and also (one who didn't see the rest of the series might not believe it) likable. Being the number two hero and an abusive father at the same time should be an impossible contadiction. Yet that's how people are, self contradicting paradoxes. Most people are both saint and sinner at the same time. Some more of one, others more of the other, but only few are mostly good or evil. We have villains with likable characters and relatable stories, so it goes without saying, that we should also have heroes with detestable characters and a repulsing history. What will separate them in the end isn't the side they are on, but what they do with the cards they were dealt in life and the unchangable decisions they already have taken. Wether they choose to decend deeper into dispair and darkness, dragging the society they blame for it down with them, or wether they will rise above their own shortcomings and change themselves, while lifting up and carrying the burden of society, is what makes them a villain or a hero.

This fight actually uses a lot of subtle visual storytelling. In the flashbacks from before Shoto uses his fire you only see his mother touching his right side or the ice side. She doesn't interact with his left or fire side at all. And they show his left and right sides in accordance to what part of his past they're trying to tell. Mostly focusing on his right at first and only later his left. And when he accepts his left side and uses his fire it happens directly after a flashback of his mother putting her hand on his left and side hugging him. A subtle way to show acceptance of his left. And in the scene where his mother was on the phone she was talking about how she couldn't look at anything that resembles Endeavour and turns around to see Shoto's left side through the gap. Or the side which resembles Endeavour. It's quite telling of how unstable she was. She probably just saw red hair blue eyes and thought it's Endeavour and panicked. And in the previous episode where Shoto unloads onto Deku they're facing each other but Deku is in the light white Shoto's in the shadows. It's a small thing but animators use these small things to show the divide and opposites and stuff Just thought it's a cool thing to do. And them adding the episode title Shoto Todoroki Origin at the end of this is a reeeeally smart move. Because his acceptance of himself is his origin. Also gives a nice message. And Endeavour is an amazing hero BUT his hero persona is separate from his personal life And also Shoto being confused and hesitant after he used his fire was a nice touch. Trauma isn't a hurdle to jump and "oh we good now" kinda thing. You move forward then and sometimes you end up taking a few steps back. So it's nice that they had him be unsure later.

I always love when people understand WHY she did what she did. So many people, even seeing the entire anime through so far, just take away from it "She was just as bad as him" and ignore the fact that she had trauma that caused her to break down the way she did when it happened. It's not something she'd consciously try to do to her kids if her mind were in a good place, but it wasn't. Trauma can fuck you up and make you do things you wouldn't usually do, sometimes without realizing you're doing it until it's too late. It wasn't good that she did it, but she's not a bad person for it - she's scarred mentally and emotionally just like the kids are.
@deadman15293 жыл бұрын
@@TwilightNecromancer Pretty much. Also, it wasn't shown but the burn mark isn't even because of her pouring boiling water, his left side is literally set on fire when he uses his quirk, he could've taken it. What happened was that after she came to her senses, she panicked and tried to heal him with her ice. That was what caused the mark. She's nowhere near a bad person.

Keep in mind in Japan, families tend to keep these issues to themselves. They don't want to ruin the whole family's reputation. It's a cultural thing (very sad and unfortunate). So actually, no one really knew Endeavor was abusing his family. No spoilers here, but there's way more to the story.

@@relic5752 that doesn't contradict what KenBoCole is saying though. he can change and try to be a better person (and it is welcomed! i'm all for personal betterment, personally), but the thing is that it's not just about their forgiviness. he messed up his wife and all of his children's childhoods, which in one way or another irreversibly changed all of them. he completely ruined ******* on a psychological level. no atonement is ever going to fix that or reverse what's been done to them, and from this point of view his arc really isn't ever going to make up for what he did.
@relic57522 жыл бұрын
@@grinstrashcan I'm not trying to completely contradict KenBoCole, only noting that disregarding Endeavor's arc based on what started it kind of spits in the face of what Shouto's own arc started from, "something small." And also the fact that "making it up," implies some sort of forgiveness from the hurt party, but it is not the point, the point is simply that this character now centers his life around repenting for his sins, not about vying for acceptance of those involved.

Then a raging, triumphant, roaring upbeat when Todoroki finally accepts himself fully and the two (now) friends clash for the finale. The animation by the legendary Yutaka Namakura, the swelling music by Yuki Hayashi, the seamless editing and directing by the same team responsible for several of the *great* episodes to come. Important cultural note for Japan. There are two keep things in Japanese culture regarding family and thats that one's private life is just that and one's family reputation if any does matter for those connected to it. Firstly, In Japan it is considered wrong to delve into someone's family life, even a public figures, basically full stop. There is very limited acceptance of approaching someone's family and even just general rules in place restricting recording and photographing people even in public. Even if someone saw a physical sign of an issue on Shoto it is unlikely for them to pry, even if his father wasn't an influential and powerful man. They basically have an aversion to it and it makes people uncomfortable to even entertain the thought. Second, on the whole family reputation thing, family honor is a very real concept still in Japan. It is not uncommon for people to be judged poorly for something their parents did wrong likewise its not uncommon for a family to express shame and make public statements of literal disown someone over a crime they were convicted of. Sad thing is that if the mom or even siblings went out about the abuse that stigma would remain over the kids in the future, especially with how high profile Endeavor is. Shoto would very likely be looked at with suspicion liike "oh thats the violent Endeavor's kid, wonder if he intends to abuse his power as well". Its fucked up but thats the kind of culture Japan still in part has and its important in understanding not only MHA but other anime with that context in mind.

At this stage of the story, Japan's top 2 Heroes have very different ideologies and motives. 1) All Might - He's a Hero because it's what he believe the world needs, the "Symbol of Peace." He's someone with not only the ability but the moral compass and sense of obligation to help those in need and protect those who can't protect themselves. This is why he was chosen to inherit One For All. He embodied what a _hero_ needed to be, rather than simply working as a _Hero_ (Notice the difference in capitalization. One is a Job and Title, while the other is what All Might is and embodies). 2) Endeavor - He is a Hero as a _profession_ . And he's a damn good one. He does what he does simply because he has the power to do so. While his abilities and actions working as a Hero may have a positive impact (depending on which characters you ask) on the wider world, *at this point in his story* , that is not his driving motivation. He's selfish, power hungry, and abusive. Without getting too into spoilers _(even if this was uploaded a year ago)_ , pay attention to him and his motivations. Endeavor is far and away from a good father or even a good person, but he's an extremely effective _Hero._

I would say that Endevour probably worked harder than All Might, because of the limits of his power....you can see when Endevour is training the three. He has a greater understanding of powers in general. That is why Gran Turino had to take over training Deku. All Might was a prodigy so he skipped steps. Which makes it difficult for him to teach Deku when he never understood his power fully to begin with.

Messed up fact: In the manga is shown that Shoto's mom tried to heal him with ice. So there is a theory that she made that scar by accident. She regretted what she did instantly and applied her own ice while trying to heal the burn but only making it worse and creating an ice burn. Thinking about it, it would be weird for Shoto to get burn with that amount of heat when he can make fire with that side of his face. Edit: I said it is a theory so nobody gets salty

Guys please stop saying this like it's confirmed, it's just a popular fan theory. If that were true, it wouldn't make sense for Shoto to shiver on his right side when it becomes too icy, or for Endeavor to be able to overheat. And we know having a fire quirk doesn't make you immune to burns, thanks to a certain other character. I'm not saying this is wrong necessarily, just please stop treating it as factual.
@naghar98273 жыл бұрын
Being able to make fire doesn't give heat immunity. That's the very reason Endeavor wanted a child like Shoto with both ice and fire to balance each other.
@NanoMp403 жыл бұрын
@@BeyondBlue22 @BeyondBlue it's literally a manga panel... and yeah, fire users can get overheated (shoto, endeavor), but it takes way too much for making damage. But if you are talking about "that character", it was already said it has a weak body since its birth, that is why it couldn't bear its own power due to having an incompatible body. The manga has shown that there is a difference between getting overheated and literally burn yourself while using your quirk.

I so admire Sam for being able to see the fact that both parents were abusive to Todoroki, so many people/reactors blame his father solely. Love Midoriya for pushing Shoto to embrace himself fully, and their relationship only gets stronger! :)
@zigsteenine8650 Жыл бұрын
Well I mean it’s a bit more complicated than that cause his mom was very mentally unstable when she did that to Todoroki. Which is why endeavor admitted her to a mental hospital. So yes she was a danger to her children and “abusive” In a way but endeavor is 100% responsible for her mental instability.
@sydneypeck2488 Жыл бұрын
People like you baffle me. In the Criminal Justice world there are concepts called mens rea and actus rea. Actus rea is the actual action, whereas mens rea is the intent, and if there is no intent (mens rea) then no crime has been committed (a person can be charged with a lesser crime, voluntary or involuntary manslaughter, if someone died though, even if it was an accident). If you do something bad but you didn't mean to do it, then you aren't a bad person. Rei at that point in the story went completely insane, and Endeavor IS responsible for that because he was the one who pushed her to that point through all of his abuse. In the scene, Rei was talking on the phone about running away and she seemed very nervous. Then, she realizes that she was overheard and turns around. At this point there are two possible things that could have happened: 1. She threw the boiling pot of water without even thinking or realizing who it was. 2. Shoto's left side was the part that was showing behind the door so it's possible that she thought that it was Endeavor and he had heard her talking about running away, so she got scared and reached for the first weapon she could find, the boiling pot of water. Hallucinations are common in people with PTSD so it is entirely possible that that is what happened. We don't see this at this point in the story, but after Rei realized what she had done, she was very upset, "What have I done? I'm so sorry Shoto!" and she uses her ice quirk to try to make it better. She was panicking because she didn't mean to do it. In every scene that we see with Rei, it is SO obvious that she loves her children. Every piece of evidence that we have shows that Rei would never intentionally hurt one of her children. Maybe it's because I'm an empath or maybe it's because I've studied Psychology extensively, but it was so obvious to me pretty much right from the beginning how broken Rei was and that she did what she did without meaning to. It is absolutely insane to me that there are people like you who are so unaware of basic human psychology and so uncaring about human emotions. Come on, just for one minute think from someone else's perspective, put yourself in someone else's shoes, and try your best to understand that person.

He was punished simply for being born and inheriting genes he had no control over and while it's great he doesn't blame her for that it's not fair to just sweep her actions under the rug. He even kept himself from visiting her for years because he felt as though his mere presence would put pressure on her. It's obvious her actions affected him just as much as his fathers.

His actions are abhorrent, but also hidden from the public both due to his power and status (and inherited wealth) and due to the culture of not talking about issues like these.

It’s kinda cool how unlike in a lot of comics, in mha, the heroes’ identities are known to the public. I’d imagine that besides that, heroes probably have people to prevent info from getting leaked and such. If people knew what endeavor has done, he would not be in the spot he’s in right now. Info getting out could effect society in many ways MANGA SPOILERS⚠️⚠️⚠️: Which is exactly what happened when everything about Dabi came out.

just one clarification because it seems like a lot of reactors get it wrong. as abusive as endeavor is when he says "i put her in a hospital" it doesnt mean he beat the shit out of here and because of that she had to go to a hospital. it means she was put in a clinic because of what she did and the mental issues she has which of course were also caused by endeavor but just to be clear because it could be interpreted that way.

I mean if you look at it... Endeavor is basically the person Bakugo could become. Just like Endeavor, Bakugo hates being anything that isn't the top or the best. If he sees Todoroki/Midoriya or anyone always stay one step ahead, as he grows up, he could become just as bad Endeavor, even if he continues being a hero. Both Bakugo and Endeavor understand the need of being a hero. There is a part of them that wants to be a hero... but their selfish/jealous immature side is what causes them to behave in a very toxic way. So if anything, Bakugo needs to get better not become another Endeavor. Not saying its a certainty with Bakugo, but there is always a slight possibility.

Minispoiler The reason of Endeavor and todoriko is presentend until the season 6 or 7 of the anime, in the manga is done
@theelite37923 жыл бұрын
By not using his fire, todoroki is actually being mad disrespectful, he says he's doing it to spite his dad, but every person he beats, he does so using less than half of his actual power (his two sides are equally strong but because they cancel out each sides weakness, I say he's more than twice as strong using both). As an opponent of his, it would suck knowing that you lost to a guy who purposely handicapped himself just so that the could spite a third party.

I love the uraraka hype from last episode, but even if she did tough bakugo, there is no scenario where she wins. She can't control things she makes weightless, besides choosing when they have weight again. Bakugo with his explosions would actually be near unstoppable if he was completely weightless.

If you're curious why Shoto got his face burnt on the side that's supposed to be fireproof, it's because his mom panicked when she realized she probably boiled his face and clumsily used her ice power to cool him down, and in fact his scars are from the ice burn, not the boiling water. It's not shown in the anime, but it's explained in the manga if i remember well.
@zigsteenine8650 Жыл бұрын
It’s not. This is a fan theory. Has never been confirmed. I like to believe this theory as well but let’s not present it as a fact…
@sydneypeck2488 Жыл бұрын
@@zigsteenine8650 Boiling water has a temperature of 212 degrees Fahrenheit whereas the coldest that a fire can burn is 400 degrees Fahrenheit. The left side of Shoto's body is meant to be able to withstand flames without burning himself, so he was likely able to withstand temperatures much higher than 400 degrees even as a kid, so there is no way that boiling water could have burned him. No, it is never spelled out directly that Rei used her ice powers, causing the burn, however it is the only thing that makes sense which makes it a significantly stronger argument than just a "fan theory"
@zigsteenine8650 Жыл бұрын
@@sydneypeck2488 and my counterargument to that is that this is a world where our common sense and logic doesn’t apply. For example, we shouldn’t be able to see mirio when he’s activating his quirk because like he explained, everything passes through him, including light. Example 2, momo’s quirk legit breaks the law of conservation of mass because she can somehow create objects bigger and heavier than herself like the canons we’ve seen numerous times. Example 3, Invisible girl shouldn’t be able to see because light should pass through her eyes like it does for mirio, yet we know she can in fact see. So yeah until confirmed otherwise it still is just a fan theory cause the author is pretty inconsistent when it comes to science in MHA. His scar could literally be explained with anything from his quirk’s heat resistance only applying to his own fire, to him being really young and possibly didn’t have as much heat resistance at the time, or quite simply that his heat resistance only activates with his quirk. Of course, these are all assumptions, but so is the ice thing. So your argument isn’t as strong as you imply.

Shoto should never have apologised to Rei. Rei’s barely better than Enji in my eyes. She’s a victim of course, but in truth so might Enji for all we know. Narcissists like him are usually victims of abuse in childhood, so why do we give Rei such a pass? She seems to have known full well it was her son in the doorway. Maybe that’s just the awkward anime choice of freezing too long on her face. It made her look sane to me. 😅

tbh for me i dont think there should be a result because they interfered . Just fyi: In the manga, the abuse from Endeavor towards his family is mainly described as neglect, not as physical violence. Now I don't quite remember if him hitting the mom happened in the manga, but apart from that it was clearly neglect, mental abuse so to say. That's not to say that it isn't any better, but I feel like it's important to clarify since some people see Endeavor as a permanent wife-beater or even suspect sexual assault, when the reality is different and the impact of his action is probably even bigger that way. It's not "just" physical abuse, as terrible as that is, but mental abuse that turns out to be much more impactful. That's also why Shoto didn't want to use the fire. If this was just about being physical, Shoto's goal would just be to be strong enough to stand up to Endeavor. But it's not. His goal is not to become like Endeavor and to reject him for neglecting his family. (and there is absolutely no indication for sexual abuse - actually quite the opposite) TLDR: Endeavor was a shit father/family man, but in a different way than a lot of people think
@TheUltimatum103 жыл бұрын
It is confirmed in the manga and even in the anime that Endeavor beat his wife. I don't understand why Endeavor fans are so gross to want to hide this. Or you are too stupid not to hear the blow that Shoto's mother receives. Even later they show us more attacks from Endeavor towards Shoto's mother. And poor Shoto witnessing all that.

@@TheUltimatum10 I don't think you had the capacity to understand my comment. I never once doubted that Endeavor hit his wife in the anime. You'd have to be pretty dense to think otherwise.
