A little video showing you guys my flame licker engine these are also known as vacuum engines atmospheric engines and they all fall under external combustion engines, similar to a stirling engine.
I go over how it works and the problems I ran into while making this. Hopefully it might help someone figure theirs out.

Look on my channel to see the updated video. Converted to run on propane, with the propane stored in the base.

I'm curious if you could try a piston ring made from PEEK or Teflon. The type used in automatic transmissions. I'd scarf cut one and try it. I feel you could actually reduce drag between the piston and cylinder. It wouldn't exert force between the piston and cylinder the way traditional rings do. If it could handle the heat which I think if designed at the lower skirt of the piston where heat is lower they would last a long time.

I resorted to using a solid graphite piston and and runs well, but it requires pre heating so that the cylinder expands to operating diameter. The graphite makes a good lubricant as well. I think you would have to machine it tight with teflon rigs as well. Ideally, make the piston and cylinder out of the same material, and in theory they will expand at the same ratio and work at all temperatures.

The reason every flame licker (even graphite piston ones) engines starts tough is condensation. The sudden heating causes condensation. Try using a heat gun to pre heat every flame licker you ever use. Doing this will extend the life of a graphite powder lubricated engine. This is something they never tell you. I feel it should be somewhere.
@nilamotk
@nilamotk 7 жыл бұрын
Michael Johnson that's not the case with this one. the reason it doesn't turn over o start up is thermal expansion. with the new graphite pistons it must be hot to turn over. and if it's hot condensation is not possible. this engine has been redone since this video has been uploaded. it not runs on propane instead of alcohol. it's alot more predictable.
@michaeljohnson6473
@michaeljohnson6473 7 жыл бұрын
Dimple Sharma I am not exactly sure why exactly. But if the engine is cold, or room temp it will get the condensation at first. Once the metal is warm, the condensation goes away, and they run great. You can pre heat with a heat gun, or even a hair dryer. You can also light the burner, move it close to the engine. In about 3 minutes once it is warm to the touch, it's ready to go. Do you have a flame licker? I may make a video demonstrating this.
@AtlasReburdened
@AtlasReburdened 6 жыл бұрын
Michael Johnson Condensation forms because the burning fuel produces a surprising amount of vaporized water. When the burning fuel is sucked in and the walls are cold enough, the gas mixture gets cooled down past it's dew point because it has such a high humidity. It's the same process that forms clouds, fog and dew, except your cylinder wall is the cold morning grass.

Look up "vertical Rebi engine". It's a flame licker, but instead of using a conventional piston, it utilizes bellows instead. Less friction, and just as important, a bigger surface area for the atmosphere to press against. I don;t get it, but somehow these engines are totally overlooked, while they are pretty powerful for what they are. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jWTFeIJuetp_rtU

I think the piston needs to be fatter and you need more surface area on the exterior to cool better. Perhaps a water jacket or water reservoir on top?

They're insanely finicky. I have a pin of like 10 pistons and valves that didn't work. I ended up making a graphite valve and piston set. That worked best for me. With dissimilar piston and cylinder you need to account for thermal expansion. My engine is completely seized at room temp but runs great at temp. External valve versions are alot more forgiving and run way better

The weak performance of this particular piston valve design is caused mainly by the limited valve opening duration available and the inability to set the valve timing with any useful 'advance' of the power piston stroke. Flamelicker engines with the valve timing dictated by a separate eccentric cam and rocker arm give far better performance than this design. I have built one of these piston valve engines to very similar design from plans supplied by Jan Ridders and also I have built a Beng's 'Nick' flamelicker. The Beng's engine operates the valve by means of a cam with adjustable advance on the valve timing. It runs far superior to this piston valve design.
