No point in that. You can install freepbx on spare computer or virtual machine and get everything with voip over network.

I have had a home PBX since 1998 which started as a Merlin system that I salvaged from a demolition, it grew to add Asterisk and VOIP and using an Adtran channel bank supporting a classic Western Electric 1A2 key system. Somewhere around 2004 I added VOIP support and integrated our office, which ran a Panasonic key system just like yours. Eventually I converted the business to Asterisk and fully integrated with my home. My parent's home and a few friend's homes are now connected together by iax

The '816 PBX allows to define extension groups that will allow to pick up a call from any extension in the group by dialing a code (I think 29). If you set up the 24 buttons properly, you will also see all extensions' activity on individual button LEDs. You will also see the CO lines' activity. You can also set up an automatic call transfer to another extension after a number of rings. Lots of possibilities to play with... Bert.

Hi, This is like a disease, never ending! Not totally fulfilled with the Panasonic PBX, I am in the process of converting to IP PBX using a Raspberry PI and eight LG-Ericsson IP8830 IP phones. I am currently running the cables in the house. In parallel, I am programming the FreePBX/Asterisk so that my system has the same functionality as my Panasonic system and my family does not feel lost with the new system. I must admit it is a lot of work to get there.... Cheers. Bert.

Hi, Thanks for watching. As mentioned below, I am in the process of converting to IP PBX using a Raspberry PI and eight LG-Ericsson IP8830 IP phones. A lot of work to get a system running with all the telephone set features such as BLT, ringing groups, thermostat control, etc.... But I love it! Cheers, Bert.

Hi Brandon. True, one digital, one analog line for each RJ-11 jack on the '816. I used regular 4-wire RJ-11/RJ-11 cables with 4-contact plugs. I cut them into two pieces to make two cables. I used a standard punch block (seen upper-left in the video) to break out each RJ-11 jack/cable to the house extension cables. Some of the extensions are wired from the expansion module. The 25 pair-cable is also brought to the punch block. Cheers, Bert.

Hi Anthony. Welcome to the world of PBX and key systems. The AT&T 992 is a generic analog phone (for regular PSTN phone lines). The Panasonic KX-TD PBX systems I recommend can interface both generic analog phones and proprietary Panasonic phones, that is, without any additional hardware. That's the nice benefit with them. You will always get a little more benefit in using proprietary Panasonic phones, than when using analog phones. It still works well, but you will have to learn *xx commands.

Hello, my friend. I purchased a KX-TD816 and KXTVS50 VPS. I am having extreme difficulties finding software for either one. The DPT's are arriving in a few days, so hopefully, I can start getting my system up and running. But I think the VPS requires software to start initial setup configuring. Thank you all for any pointers / moral support. :)

Hi, Yes, this is true. Analog proprietary phones (T70xx-series, for example) use a combination of regular analog twisted pair for the voice and the second pair for the digital functionality on the phone. I elected to use Digital sets (T72xx-series), which use a single twisted pair and are fully digital, including the voice channel. Easier to wire when the number of pairs is limited. I use T7230's everywhere in the house. Cheers, Bert.

I am looking to do the same thing. I want to get some vintage rotary dial phones set up around the house. I am looking at a 816 as well. I don't think they have the programming set. I am hoping I can just reset it to defaults and that will suffice. Possible? Thanks for doing the video. 73.

The cable is a standard 9-pin-to-25-pin Null modem cable. you can make it yourself. Or use a straight cable and add a Null modem adapter. For the DOS software, search for file "e1232a.exe" on the web. There are many old versions around. Look for version 6.02A7 (year 2002), which I think is the latest. Cheers, Bert.

This very educational and inspiring. Thanks for sharing. Initially I planned to do the same thing but after toying with the idea, I ended up going for voIP since I already have the backbone all planned up. I figured putting an analog would require extra work due to the additional patch panel (I like it organized) let alone a separate system. Like you, I was also fascinated with all this home telecom stuff during my childhood. I was also thinking of putting up a video once I'm done but since what I'll be putting up is a voIP, there really is nothing to show since its just plugging in another RJ45 into the wall socket. I'll be using a Grandstream.

Hi Dean, I don't quite agree with you. For a simple system with only analogue phones, maybe, but with full-featured phones like mine, the Asterisk-based PBX is not easier to set up. The Panasonic PBX is very well documented. The proprietary phones are Plug-and-Play. If you know the basics of telephony, it is almost a turn-key solution. The IPPBX requires a lot of customization for my applications. I use the *_custom.conf files for many functions! The phones were not trivial to program either...

Hi rhblakeman, I control the "Temperature Hold" button on my electronic thermostat. I can remotely call the TD816, and depress that button via the door opener relay. This gets the thermostat back into programmed mode, so the air conditioning or furnace will start. Normally an external call cannot send the door opener code, so I had to do a trick with the Voicemail TVP200 box and also wire one of the external line jacks to a free extension port. Too complex to detail further here. Cheers, Bert.

Hey, what a neat and tidy wiring job you did. I really like your modifications too, like replacing the hard drive in the voice mail system and your "door opener" modification. I installed a Merlin system in our house, since replaced with a Partner system. I know the Panasonic is a great system. Have you considered updating with an IP system just for fun? I would like to try one of those sometime. Thanks for sharing.

PABX (Private Automatic Business eXchange). One rather large problem there is absolutely no support by Panasonic for discontinued products. My TA824 is now 8-9 years old, for now it's still supported. The TVA50 voice mail unit 7-8 years old, and it is now failing (Flash memory wear). Luckily it is supported and can be repaired with fresh new parts. Many manuals are all over the place, however with Panasonic Digital, information is left out of the documentation which is only covered in a training class. One other problem with Panasonic Digital. Only certified dealers are allowed to sell and service them. With the use of modern HDs they sleep when not in use (spin down) to stand by mode. I do not know about elsewhere but in the US, punch down blocks are 66 (50 pair) or 110 (also 50 pair). Unfortunately Flash Memory wears much like a hard drive from read/write access. In a Panasonic voicemail system they both get a hard work out.

Hi Bertrand From reviewing the comments below, I understand that you are no longer using this KX-TD816/TVP200 system. However, I am hoping that you might have the software still. The link that you have provided no longer works! I have found user manuals and read through them, and tried programming various things using the handset (you weren't kidding when you said it was tedious!) I have got the TD816 running well; but voicemail integration has me lost. I have the same system that you show (with exception of 8-ext module), and I cannot find any reliable software anywhere! I would greatly appreciate anything you can offer. Regards James.

Hi, i have two Panasonic td816 exchanges running at two different locations, 200 meters appart. Each exchange has its own 3 digits numbering scheme (2xx and 3xx respectively). I would like to interconnect these two exchanges, in order to facilitate voice communication between the two locations (each subscriber from location A to dial directly any subscriber from location B). How should i do that? Thanks in advance.

hi though this has been post way back Dec 10, 2012 but i still find it interesting .. i'm just wondering with your Panasonic KX-TD816, how many telco line(s) does it require? i mean does it have like 10 telco lines then 1 line is used as "front line" or the number being dialed outside but the "front number" will not get busy not unless the telco block of lines are all used (if you know what i mean). i'm just asking because we have a discussion here in our workplace about PABX in which my colleague said that PABX needs a block of telco lines inorder for it not to get busy with only one front line as the main line that everyone knows or recognize as the company phone number. however, correct me if i'm wrong but the way i understand it is that a PABX works like with only 1 paid subscription telco line then a PABX machine inside the office or home which is capable of receiving 5 calls if the PABX has the features of 5-in 5-out so the single telco line will only get busy when all the 5-in's are already full or used so the next incoming call will hear a busy tone if it call the single telco line unless the call goes to the voicemail or queue-waiting if those are configured .. well, those are the way i understand it :) any way, hope you can enlighten me or those who have some ideas about PABX can also share their expertise. cheers!

The only reason I am looking at PBX systems for my home is to weed out solicitation, charity, and political calls. A system that provides a greeting, then gives the option to press 1 for one person or department, then 2 for another, then 3 for another, so if nobody presses any number at all then the call is disconnected. I want all of this on a single residential line then using 3 internal lines, I wouldn't have to hardwire the separate phones around the house as the base units can be wireless with the 4 phone system sets (assuming they won't interfere with each other being so close), then each with separate voice mailboxes. This is really a lot of trouble to just block out the automated calls. Century Link does have the "No Solicitation" feature, where a recording says, "this number does not accept solicitation calls, if you are a solicitor then please remove this number from your records and place the number on your do not call list, if you are not a solicitor then press one or stay on the line." That message is a very negative message to force my potential clients to have to listen to, and it is too long, when all it has to say is, Welcome to _ _ _, to continue this call please press 1. Another problem with the Century Link setup is that it says "press 1 or stay on the line". That means that if it's a long political message that keeps playing then my phone will eventually ring through. I need a system that disconnects if a human does not press a number. People listening to the business greeting then pressing the proper department won't be offensive to anyone, but when I use the No Solicitation feature it's not only annoying for people but just outright unprofessional. Tips and recommended inexpensive products are welcome, although, I have ruled out VOIP as I think VOIP like with magic Jack and Vonage are not reliable enough.

Hi, I like your setup and am thinking about installing something like it. I just have a few questions. First, from my understanding from your video, each RJ11 jack in the PBX supports two extensions. 1 digital and 1 analog. What did u use to break out each RJ11 jack to two RJ11 jacks with separate extensions? Thanks so much!

When you had this system, did it have caller ID? Were the extension names programmable as well? What was the buzzer like for the doorphone? Some people have reported that it's the same tone as the intercom, which wouldn't be suitable as a doorbell because you wouldn't be able to tell the difference between an intercom call and a visitor at the door. Thanks in advance for your insight... '73

Hi, I did not subscribe to the caller ID service, unfotunately. In any case, I don't think my hardware supported caller ID anyway (I go by memory here...). Did not have the KX-TD193 module. I did not have a doorphone. I had the door opener module though. 73.

Hi, It has been a few years now that I migrated to Asterisk/VOIP. I do not recall much about it. But I very much doubt it is the phones. There may be a system gain adjustment. Have you checked in the manuals? One possible way to find out is to contact installers and servicemen on the Sundance Communications Panasonic Forum: sundance-communications.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/forums/9/1/Panasonic This is how I found answers back when I had the system. Good luck.

Hello, When you state sometimes is it all the time or just once in a while? I state that because sometimes the other end is actually really quiet, you may be able to turn up the dial on the phone but that only does so good. System gain may do some good, but it is only if the system supports it. I know on later models of Panasonic TDE/TDA it is supported it adds a little bit more of noise through but not alot. Also, if I may add take a look at the handsets those are known to get gunky and real quiet after some time of use, I replace 4-16 of those a year just for various reasons.

Hi Ben, I never owned these phones so I am not positive about what I say. But there could be compatibility issues with your two phones depending on what version of TD816 you own. I read conflicting compatibility information. In the 2005 KX-TD Product catalog, it shows that the 7736 is NOT supported, and the 7730 is not even listed in the table. Could you be out of luck? Bert,

Ben...the KX-TD software version NEEDS to be either a 6 or 7 for those model phones to work....look at silver sticker on bottom of system and look for a circle with a number in it....yours is going to be a 1-5 most likely...if no circle it's a "0" version. Those model phones were mainly intended for the KX-T624 / 824 series systems.

Well, since asterisk is actually a software, all you need is a computer to run it - a server more exactly (that's gonna be your "PBX"). Asterisk is free and open source, you can download and install. Search "crosstalk solutions freepbx 101" on youtube and watch the videos. Chris has great tutorials to get you started.

Sorry, I can't help you. It has been too long since I last touched it. Follow the manual and restore to factory defaults.

This is a dangerous hobby. I have absolutely no need for a PBX system at home. I live alone in a single story house with no basement. But I've been fascinated with PBX systems for years, and also have a fondness for old phones. I've recently started collecting both. I have a couple of Cisco IP phones working with Asterisk. I have a couple of more that I'm about to start experimenting with setting up via Call Manager Express on a Cisco integrated services router. I already have a few analog phones working on the router via a VIC3-FXS/DID card, including a recently acquired Western Electric model 302 rotary phone. Even with all of the above I've been exploring eBay checking out 1A2 key systems and various PBX systems.

+Eric Bampoe Hi Eric, I sold my PBX phone system 2 years ago, so I am no longer in position to help. Besides, TA824 is a different beast. There are PBX forums where you can get answers. One is at Sundance Communications. Soory I cannot help...

+VE2ZAZ So you use only till 2014 this PBX system? I self have a Agfeo AS35. It is very small in opposite. Have 1 ISDN out; 3 ISDN in/out; 11 analog ports; 1 analog port / door open line; 1 Audio Information System incl. Music hold on line. Works in my appartment since 2010 without problems; was installed before in a doctors office. Works 24h/7d - since I have telephone over Ethernet over Fiber works at my FritzBox 7390 too. Every room have one phone, living room two stationary, one mobile DECT. Of course I live alone but the phone rings everytime if you be in the wrong room! Why do you put your PBX system away?

These are not thick binders. And it is the kind of document you read diagonally. You must refer to them often though. This is not plug-and-play. No pain, no gain... :-)

I have migrated to an Asterisk VoIP setup since I made that video. I do not consider WiFi reliable enough for a permanent installation VoIP system though. I have experienced this often. I do have a WiFi smart phone in my pocket, but only use it when I am outdoors around the house.

Neither. I use an Asterisk server running on a Raspberry-Pi, and 8 IP phones in the house.

VE2ZAZ cool! Does it have the same features that you had?
@VE2ZAZ
@VE2ZAZ 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, and more. More flexible, programmable, customizable. Read about Asterisk PBX. I run FreePBX on a Raspberry Pi. Of course the phone you use may have an impact on the accessible features. But you need an ethernet switch and some Cat-5 cable going to all extensions.
