Great idea with the videos. I have been using Babbel for 6 months now as I am learning Dutch. But in general I really like Babbel and practice with this app every day.

Researching Babbel for German because we plan on moving there soon. My husband was born there, but his German is rusty. I look forward to conversing with him in German. Thank you for your video.

For real the grammar can be quite confusing. But practise writing a lot and get it corrected. So habe ich die Grammatik gelernt.

I used Babbel for the first time this past summer, trying to use it everyday for 3 months. I would do it on the train to work and back. I definitely expanded my vocabulary and I learned, but I realized that it's not my best learning method. I also wrote down a lot of the vocab I did and the dialogues, etc. My goal is to speak and on the train to work I'm not going to say a word out loud of course. I didn't like that you can't look back on the lessons you did without having to redo the whole lesson. So you can't look back at the sentences, etc. And then for a lot of it I had speaking recognition off. It was too much writing for me basically. I still have the subscription though so maybe I will use it again soon and the vocab is very relevant I think. If you want a more speaking based course I recently got Rocket French and am loving it and I think the German course would probably be just as good! Looking for content from multiple courses is definitely the best idea and to know how you personally like to study best. Happy learning!
@divylearns79666 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your comment! I agree, learning from multiple different sources is best for learning as we all don't learn in just 1 way. I will definitely look into the Rocket Languages for German!

I think my greatest problem with Babbel is they try to shortcut their students which often leaves absolute beginners beached. For instance, using Portuguese they'll teach the word 'Eu' meaning 'I'. Immediately following that they'll throw down a whole sentence featuring this word without the student knowing any other word than 'Eu' eg: 'Hoje, Eu vou ver o meu pai' (Today, I will see my father). This is confusing enough but if there's a descriptive adjective it can quickly lead to a mistranslation eg: 'Eu gosto do meu casaco vermelho' (I like my red coat) will have English speakers believing the Portuguese word for coat is 'vermelho' if the only word from that sentence they've been taught is 'eu' while the rest have become almost incidental. This actually gets worse as the courses go on. If Babbel were honest they'd admit they're probably looking for students who have already been taught basic adverbs, verbs, nouns and adjectives (when, why, what, and, to, with, right, wrong etc) and the basic structure of their chosen study language and they'll take if from there, sort of like a supplementary course. Ironically, given Babbel's frequent disparaging innuendos about their rival, I suspect many of their customers are upgrading to them from Duolingo. Unfortunately, Babbel are not so honest as to give a month's free trial because that's where most of their students crash out due to their demanding and uninspiring teaching methods. That's covered by the 'business is business' rule I suppose.

I so agree. I had an easier time learning Spanish because I grew up in southern California. Now I am trying to learn German and it is like learning a foreign language. My babble subscription was gifted to me. If it wasn't, I would have asked for a refund immediately and used that money to pay for a structured German class online.
@rekietabeatslc99802 жыл бұрын
Lol yeah I upgraded from Duo. I did the free Duo off & on for a while, when I got serious & subscribed I realized what a waste of time it was (cancelled within 48 hours & got a refund.) Babble is SO much better, but I also translate individual words to better understand how the sentences are structured, and use German subtitles when listening to my favorite German band. Babbel is a great app, but I wouldn't recommend relying solely on it.

I'm using Lingodeer for German. It's really good, but German isn't the easiest of all languages to learn. Things aren't sticking with me as much as they usually do with other languages. I'm thinking about using Babbel for German, mainly because of it's format and structure, but I'll probably finish the course on Lingodeer before going to Babbel (and practice my German, only studying with apps isn't enough - thanks for the reminder).
@TomKaren944 жыл бұрын
How long each day? For how long a period? If I have 15 months before I take a vacation to a certain country, can I be fluent enough to get by for a couple weeks?
@rekietabeatslc99802 жыл бұрын
Babbel does seem to rush things a bit. I translate individual words to better understand how the sentences are structured, and use German subtitles when listening to my favorite German band (Rammstein, natürlich.) Babbel is a great app & has helped me tremendously, but I wouldn't recommend relying solely on it. (BTW, if you don't like it & cancel within 48 hours through Google play you can get a refund-found that out when I subscribed to Duo... THAT was a soul-crushing, mind-numbing waste of a weekend....)

Rick Jones it doesn’t, but after complete a course it does give you a certificate and tells you approximately what level you are based on completion of that course!

Divy Learns its completely free and it's an audio based course focusing on grammar rules and conjugation. I used it for Spanish and it was easily the most useful course I took when I wanted to learn in a bit of a hurry. However, the courses can be long. The Spanish course is 90 tracks and the German is 50 tracks. They are all available on KZbin

Cuidado con tus hijos! No les recomiendo Babbel, en el curso de bodas involucra tema POLÉMICO con imagen de "boda" de la nueva agenda doctrinal que quieren algunos grupos minoritarios implementar quebrantando los valores humanos y la sociedad. Careful with your children! I do not recommend Babbel, in the course of weddings it includes a VERY CONTROVERAIAL issue with the image of "wedding" form the new doctrinal agenda that some minority groups want to implement, breaking human values and society..
