I remember back in the day hearing this as a kid and not really listening to the lyrics, but now listening to it again I can't believe she sang this back in the day when women had so much less power and influence than they do today. That's freaking powerful. It's fantastic. Speaking from personal power.

She was ahead of her time in the 60's. Woman's Lib was just coming out and women were taking a stand. Things have changed now. Men are not as controlling as they were then. there was good, logical reasons things were how they were. families were better suited with the man working so mothers, the overwhelming best choice, could raise the children at home. yeah, things have changed but,, imo it is still the best option if the mother can afford to stay home. destroying the nuclear family has taken it's toll...and it's not good. as helpful as feminism has been, it's been awfully destructive for women and, especially, children in the process. the data is very clear on this subject.

Shawn & Mel, from Wikipedia: “You Don't Own Me" is a popular song written by Philadelphia songwriters John Madara and David White and recorded by Lesley Gore in 1963, when Gore was 17 years old. The song was Gore's second most successful recording and her last top-ten single. On November 27, 2016, along with 24 other songs, the Grammy Hall of Fame announced its induction. The song expresses emancipation, as the singer tells a lover that he does not own her, that he isn't to tell her what to do or what to say, and that he is not to put her on display. The song's lyrics became an inspiration for younger women and are sometimes cited as a factor in the second wave feminist movement.

@@donny1960 ahh, so i do have a point here... interesting. i'm just pointing out the hypocrisy of OP, jsjazz 12, talking about men treating women like objects "back then''. My point is women don't need men's help to do that because, now is not back then, yet, women put themselves out there as sex objects more than ever, and at a steadily increasing rate and use every avenue they can to do it. So, is that men making them do that? uh, NO...and saying some men treated women like objects...NO SHIT! Men and women used to do that, still do that, and will always do that. Basically, I'm just saying jsjazz 12 is full of shit and sounds like one of those weird ass modern feminists, you know, the feminazis.

@@mysonandme8424 But it's their choices because it's their bodies and their lives, not because someone else is telling them to do so or because someone else thinks its ok to show them off without asking their permission. The song is saying 'don't tell me what to do with my life and don't judge me for how I live my life'. And when people judge women for posting pictures of themselves or not posting pictures of themselves, or for dressing risqué or dressing conservatively because they make the choice to post or not to post or to dress themselves how they like to that's almost on the same level as treating them as objects because instead of taking away their ability to choose they're mocking them for making their choices thereby undermining their ability to make choices.

She (Leslie Gore) is just one of the reasons why I considered the music of the 60's as the greatest decade in rock & roll history. The song was a #1 hit for then 17 year old Leslie Gore back in 1963. This was the pre-cursor to the women's lib movement of the middle to late 60's. It became sort of a rallying cry for women to take their place alongside men in the corporate field. As bosses and executives. Becoming entrepreneurs and making their mark in the business world. Awesome reaction as always. Note: Take a look and listen to this 60's teen age girl group known as "The Shangri Las." They were known then as bad girls of rock & roll. Their songs were like mini-operas and novellas.

So then the music business came out with songs of stories of teenage heart break, love in the laundry mat. so much fun music and pictures of the fans for us to see. thanks for listening. love you two. theresa. oh and they also had tons of hair spray on. Precious. I may have been 10 years old listening to this music. I'm not sure in the 60's when this came out, but just this morning I woke up with this song on my heart. LOL, I've not thought of it for 60 years, hehe. I guess I was "that" kid, leaving home at 16, in the early 70's, feeling unseen and misunderstood. I may have jumped from the frying pan into the fire, as we didn't start talkin' bout co-dependency till, late 90's? Still, life is a teacher fo sho, and those things that could have destroyed us can magically turn to be good towards us, leaving us with that sweet, Divine fruit of Wisdom. I wept when I finally found the song and sang with her...Omg-oodness, how surprised I was to feel tears moving through my body! I've come a looooong way, and today, these words brought so close, just how far I've come. Some of the strongest lessons learned guided me into a greater understanding of my Authentic Self, recognizing what's mine and what's not mine, and the importance of Letting go! What an amaZing song that continues to move us along....Thank you Lesley Gore. Hehehe, what a way to start my day! Thank you beauty-full people, so nice to meet you:) 🌹

I remember where I was the first time I heard this song. I was three years old, in the basement playroom, on a Saturday morning, with two of my brothers and all three sisters. The melody scared me, and of course a three I didn’t understand most of the lyrics. I’ll be 63 next year, and it still stirs emotions in me.

It was radical back in those days....as my mom told me one time in those days women were seen more as an accessory to men. This was like 1963 right before womens lib and the whole counter culture groove and get this; she was just a teenager as well. History making.

Please react to Linda Ronstadt singing either “Long Long Time” or “Blue Bayou.” She had such an amazing, effortless voice. She recorded “I Will Always Love You” soon after Dolly, and that laid the foundation for Whitney’s bombastic legendary hit with the song.

Oh, I didn't know Linda did Dolly's song "I will always love you" ... Dolly wrote that for her boss. I do know Whitney asked Dolly for permission to sing it. Dolly talked about it in one of her documentaries I saw on KZbin. I never knew Dolly sang it first until then, always thought it was Whitney. They both sang it beautifully!
