As a dog walker I was walking a husky and pit bull who both had strong prey drive. They always chased lizards (on leash). One time I thought she was trying to chase a lizard. Instead she stuck her head in the bush and came out swung the rabbit one time and it was dead. She was so proud and dropped it at my feet .(a gift). Prey drive is real. Don't be surprised. It happens.

I enjoyed your little story! Reminds me of my dogs, I’m always very amazed with my huskies prey drive, even though I’ve had one of them for 7 years. It’s crazy the lengths they will go to over BUGS. 🤣 of course they like birds, bunnies and all those things too but we see a lot more bugs outside. It can be annoying when my pup wants to stop every couple of feet to pounce on whatever bug he’s found

Glad Hila is okay! Tough to keep other critters out of our acre, fenced yard...most of our six huskies over 25 years have been efficient killers of rabbits, raccoons, ground hogs and snakes. We never encourage or want this to happen...but they are natural born killers, we always say. Unfortunately, one stray cat also lost its life !!! So sad !

Awesome!!! 😂 Thank you so so much for being honest and not emotional. My husky chases squirrels every time we go out, it's like they're always new to him. I don't let him actually go for it because of diseases. But, if he ever does, I'll worry about his health only and not care about the very natural kill.

People need to realize that Huskies were bred for different reasons and natural instincts is embedded into their genes though they can be trained out of these tendencies. My only concern is for a channel that is prided around the two dogs and their top tier behaviour that this should be addressed when he knows the full story and how it happened. Seems like bits and pieces of a story but when something like this happens with your dog and it usually never happens it can take time to identify

My Huskita Boy Moose will just sit down and stare at other wild animals forever. He doesn't even try to go after them... He is very quiet. He doesn't even talk much for a husky. He has his chatty moods but he is super chill. A lover not a fighter. Lol but I have no idea how he would react if he wasn't on the leash.

My 17 month old Husky patrols the fenced in large front yard/pasture area…..a lot like yours with the front porch facing outwards to it. He prefers to be outside rather than inside. So far this summer, he has brought me 2 dead ground squirrels, 2 dead field mice, got in a fight with a Bull snake (non poisonous), sprayed twice by a skunk, and encountered a toxic yellow/black salamander at 1 am. He never barks unless he’s encountered something…..so whenever I hear him bark, I immediately head outside….. day or night. He brings his kills to me and leaves them outside my window on the porch. 😱 It breaks my heart when he kills things and grosses me out when I have to remove them. I always tell him thank you though because he thinks he is in some way providing for me or respecting me as pack leader. (at least that’s what I’ve read) He is on constant alert…..not a blade of grass moves on this hill that he doesn’t know about. 😊 I think a Husky is just in their primal element when outdoors and free.

The breeder we got our Malamute from very proudly told us that our puppy was raised with a cat. Well, evidently someone forgot to tell Montana he loves kitties. He found a cat in the backyard and there was a very vocal argument going on. My husband had to physically drag the dog into the house so kitty didn't go to that big sandbox in the sky. We live miles out in the Styx of Tennessee and no neighbors have cats. Our closest neighbor lives at least a mile away.

I actually think the opposite with my Husky. He's a complete angel inside, like yours...but the inside is MINE...I'm the alpha indoors. When he's outside, that's HIS yard, and he protects it at all costs....he's ended a few moles, a rabbit, a juvenile raccoon, and a few mice....he barks at deer, delivery drivers, people walking down the street...indoors, not a peep.

I’ve had 2 incidents with my 2 year old female husky, 1st incident she ran out my side gate chased a cat about 3 blocks down the street, fortunately the cat ran up a tree but my husky sat there waiting for it to come down. Second incident she dragged a raccoon from a tree in our backyard as it was coming down, the raccoon was a juvenile fortunately I saw this happen and was able to take the raccoon from her after she violently shook the poor guy. The raccoon survived but it’s like you said her dog personality changes, she goes from this friendly, happy husky to a killing machine that doesn’t listen.

I have a neighbor across the street that invites tons of stray cats (outdoors only) and he just feeds them scraps of food. Of course when I leave to walk our Husky, she wants to chase the cats and eat the scraps. She’s getting better at bypassing it from training, but reality is her natural instincts kick in. She, like other Huskies just have a high prey drive. Wishing you, Hila, and Britney Spears (George) all the best.

I have two beautiful huskies, I have a red male just over a year old, and a pure white female who is almost 6 months. Amazing dogs, however, about one week ago my male killed a rabbit in our back yard. We have a fairly large backyard that we just had renovated so they couldn’t go out there, we had to leash them and take them upfront for 10 weeks. He’s had never killed anything or showed any type of indication that he would do anything like this. He seems to have gotten pretty territorial when we let him into the back yard again. I know that huskies have a strong prey drive, but he runs to the same spot every time we open the door. He’s even started digging under the fence where he killed the rabbit. We are having a professional trainer come out and work with us and our dogs so we know how best to work with them inside and out side. We have three cats in the house, and I’m afraid he may kill one of them if he wants too. I will tell you though, he was proud of his kill.

Been a fan for years, I train and rescue huskies, I have 3 , two boys 5 and a 1 year old spoiled rescue princess 😆 I also have a small poultry farm, I’ve trained them to ignore them and they are trained to protect their property and the animals on it. I trained my pups by putting a chicken in a pet carrier with some straw tossed in and putting it in the house, let them investigate and paw sniff and snoot, but correct bad behavior instantly, I also put the carrier and chicken in their yard. When chickens are boring you won and no more stinky chicken in the house 🏡, I will say my pups aka little wolves love their two kittens and ancient kitty, we have a problem with some bad stays that have tried to attack the chickens and our ancient kitty the pups will defend their silly pack ,the kittens might think they are little huskies. The pups will not let another animal hurt their kitties. And are very very protective of them and their property. Keep up the good work 👍 I always recommend your channel when the wolf pack and I meet people. Thank you 😊

What I have learned is my Husky will not kill a member of the pack (your cat). However, they will snap the neck of anything they see as prey. Very hard to break them from the prey mode. I always keep my huskey in a secure a kennel. If she gets out, she will kill small prey of anykind. Such as ducks, chickens and cats.

A cat got into my garden with my 2 huskies. The worst happened and the cat didn’t leave. It was horrible knowing my normally gentle girls could do something like that, but it’s just their nature I guess. I know the cat put up a fight coz one of their faces was all scratched up and she stank of cat pee . I was still devastated. I felt so guilty ( and still do many years later) but it happens I guess 😞 it’s important we talk about this honestly so people getting huskies, or other high prey drive dogs, are aware this can happen.
@smilesandthetwistedmd7608
@smilesandthetwistedmd7608 2 жыл бұрын
Nothing to feel devastated or guilty about. Territorialness and protection of space is literally in their DNA. The cat was on THEIR territory, and most likely was a very sick diseased stray. You're dog did it a favor. Cats are over populated, and carry nasty death causing diseases. You don't feel sorry for squishing a spider do you? You should feel guilty for acting like your dog did anything wrong, and not immediately take it to the vet and get it checked. The rank of the cat pee shows how sick it was. Dogs can live shorter lives as cat saliva carry microbial bacteria that can cause organ failure in dogs. I'm happy your dog killed that cat, and did it's job, and protected you. I'm ashamed of you for not rewarding your dog with a check up and good health & treats for protecting you.

@@smilesandthetwistedmd7608 I appreciate that. It's more about me feeling bad it was somebody's pet y'know? To a child in the family it could be devastating for them. Life is life, and nature is nature but I'm a real softy for any animal. I just hope it was quick and poor kitty didn't suffer. ☹️

I have ducks and chickens. After losing 9 chickens and 3 ducks to a coyote attack, I had 10 chickens and two ducks left. Trying to round up the remaining hens and ducks who scattered to the front property (they usually stay in an area at the rear of the property), my 6 month old husky, Bandit, chased, caught, and killed one of the ducks. He trapped it in the woods on the other side of a barbed wire fence and I couldn’t get to him in time. Recall was out the window, not that he’s great at it yet anyway. It was horrifying. He didn’t eat the duck but took it to the back yard and lay beside it. Almost like he was so very proud of himself. I need to learn how to deal with this. I too, have a working farm.

I have two amazing huskies that are amazing with my 10yo boy and me. I had regular squirrel visitors that would steal fruit from my trees, and I would jokingly go out there and talk to them about their obvious excitement and desire to get that squirrel. Last week, the little guy missed a jump or a branch broke and was on the ground for 1 second. My high-intensity husky dispatched that little guy with such speed and ferocity, that even with me yelling "drop it" at the top of my lungs, 2-3 seconds in her mouth did him in quickly:(. She too is super chill & gentle in the house, but when on walks, she's always darting right/left looking for something, and now I think I know what that something is. It's hard to reconcile their gentle side with the little predator that comes out from time to time. Backpacking is going to be challenging with her because I don't want her tied to me pulling me down with my pack, but I also don't want her killing every little critter that she sees. I hope Hela's behavior is temporary or something that you can train out.

One of my Husky's killed a cat once. It wasn't a Husky versus Cat issue at first. My husky was eating from his bowl outside. A stray cat came up and decided to "share" the meal. Surprisingly the Husky kept eating away and was "sharing" with the cat. Then, well, the cat hissed at him, hit him in the face with an open clawed left hook - and the rest is history. The husky finished the meal alone.

When i had my Eurasier , he killed a cat once while we were on a walk in the wild :/ And once a bird. I bet he had some malamute genes as his father didn't have the "rounded tail port" that usually eurasiers have, but the one that malamutes have, despite the fact he was an eurasier in his pedigree. So outdoor, he had some of the caracteristic behavior malamutes have, high predation instinct and territorial behavior when unknown animals were encountered; once he passed through a river to stab a goat on the other side in the "wolf style " using his mouth to knock down his prey by preventing breath. ( this time i was so scared out , fortunately he stopped this and returned ^^ ) Another time he was going nuts because of a chicken who "invited himself" in my property, i needed to calm him dawn as he was completely out of control , didn't know what was going on in his head at this time , but it was scary; fortunately my voice achieved to calm him down and he behaved like he was not knowing what he was doing, just like a sudden act of crazyness ! ^^

I assume since she is more husky, I need to understand the husky breed more in order to train her. Our other dog is a 5 yr old German Shepherd, and we have had GS is the past so we are very familiar with the GS breed and training. So my question is… do husky’s dig alot??? And get into a ton of mischief?? I have never experienced this much mischief with any of our GS nor have they dug 50 billion holes in the back yard! And yes she has already got a hold of one of our hens! Luckily we caught her before she killed her.

This new husky we have is a growler , bit my 7 year old twice (not bad ) tries to get my cats and bunny . She has gotten out of our fence 4 times already .

My husky took a year or two to stop but she did. Now I trust her alone at home with the cat, nothing will happen except maybe some cat poop eaten from the litter box.

my husky lived with a cat for years and whenever she sees a cat that she doesn't know she tries to chase it, and if she is off leash or the cat comes into our yard she will kill it if she can.

I've been considering a raw diet for my husky (and 14-year-old chihuahua) and I also have chickens. We recently had to rehome our other husky because it was obsessively trying to get at the chickens and finally bashed through fencing to kill one along with my daughter's pet duck. We found out that the previous foster home for that husky had a neighbor with free range chickens, so the dog was constantly tormented by running chickens. (We adopted both huskies a few months ago.) The remaining husky, Kira, doesn't seem to be bothered by the chickens. But I'm wondering if feeding my dog raw chicken will encourage aggression toward the live chickens. I'd love your thoughts on this. Thanks!

So I recently got a husky puppy and I have a dachshund. The puppy triesto nip at my family’s dachshund but they do get along. I’m not sure if my husky will be a problem to my dachshund in the future because of their high prey drive. If they get to know eachother could the husky still potentially harm the dachshund?

If you have it from a puppy and you raise it with the dachshund, then with proper training it'll never see that dog as prey.

Whelp, huskies do have a predatory instinct. My husky, Leah killed some of the neighbor's chickens. I had to surrender her, I started to have the onset of spinal stenosis and spinal arthritis. Wasn't fair to keep her and not let her husky out. I also found out that there was a state law about livestock and that she could have been shot and killed by the farmer. I couldn't let that happen. I miss her, but I get visits from her every now and then. Her new handlers let me stay in touch with her.

I saved this husky from abuse & neglect and he is pretty terrified of making people angry or yelling. He freaks out when I try to train him same way as I've trained pitbulls. That's why I'm here and searching for answers on husky training. Today he came very close to killing a stray kitty that my neighbor feeds.. cat barely got away. Husky won't come when I call or stop when I say no. Also he craps repeatedly every night on my floor. Lately he's been going on pads but so many piles! And some aren't on the pads. We live indoors in an apartment and only place for him to run is a dog park, where he is fairly reasonable & listens half way. I am afraid he is permanently untrainable as he cry's and struggles if I try to show him his poop & say no.. any suggestions? I'm really worried about him getting out and going after the cats.. one is elderly and can't get away as fast.

Obviously Huge difference in breeds, but my Yorkies were outside and one disappeared. Literally just disappeared. She is only 6 lbs. she came home after an hour and seemed scared but fine. A week later I found cat bites that were scabbed over on her. Don’t know how I missed them. I think it was in my yard and snatched her. Sorry but I see that cat again…..

We are 2 weeks into fostering a 2 yr old. Been keeping her separated from my cat. Yesterday tried to do an introduction after 2 weeks of letting her smell through the door, etc. Had the cat up high but apparently not high enough. She bit the cat on the foot. Vet says all will be fine. We meet with a trainer today because we had considered adoption but now I'm highly reconsidering.

I just wanna say not to feel too bad about the kitty, homie. (Idk your name sorry lol) as morbid and cruel as this may sound, it’s a part of life. Some people will scream that you need to be watching your dogs 24/7 so stuff like this doesn’t happen but i don’t think that’s entirely possible all the time. You have that fence for a reason, and like someone else has mentioned stray cats are a problem. Not only do they carry diseases but they increase their population like crazy and kill all kinds of wildlife. I’m also fairly certain cats are considered an invasive species.

My female husky got a hold of a groundhog in our backyard. I heard some rustling by our shed so I investigated and found she had it in her mouth. She wouldn’t let it go, so it did end up dying. I had my fiancé bury the body, but my other husky, my male, found the body, and started playing with it and throwing it up in the air trying to catch it like a toy. I was horrified.

Pour lime over the body when burying the critters. Nothing will dig it up. We used to have 8 acres growing up, and my Dad found that worked best.

Why my dad HATES dogs and love cats so when he was a child he had 7 cats one he spotted a cat outside his door he thought “what if I adopted the cat” now it was a kitten and was token to the vet with my dad. When it was a few days after he lives at lvl 2 cuz he has cats and then the kitten JUMPED down and a dog killed it.

You said there were flies around? I feel like it's more likely she got into a fight with a different animal. Perhaps one that came around because of the dead cat or maybe the other animal was bringing around the cats carcass and dropped it on your land after fighting hela

My husky has caught 4 cats in the last year. All while I'm walking him on leash, he pulls them out of thin air.. it's insane.. yesterday I was getting tires put on my truck at Walmart. I had ghost with me and was walking him past some shipping containers and a cat stuck his head out from the bottom of one and boom, he snatched it and rag dolled it back and forth while it was trying to slice his face off. It's so hard to get them out of his mouth.. 4 times now.. never been off leash.. and still catches cats

You have the wrong type of fence for keeping animals out. The squares are big enough for cats, skunks, racoons and other animals to easily get through. I find it likely a racoon or skunk was eating on the cat and that is what she fought. I know it's not what you want to do, but you really should replace the fencing with chain link or something with smaller gaps, under 6 foot wont stop deer, and under 5 foot the huskies Can get over it. You can socialize the dogs with the chickens and they can learn to not mess with them. My huskies get all the small critters that come inside my 6' high fence -- last week it was a suicidal skunk pe-ew
