Instructions from my audiologist: 1. Don’t wear hearing protection (earplugs) in regular listening environments (i.e. those where volume level stays below 85 dB), even if being in those environments causes discomfort. 2. Avoid completely silent environments for long periods; instead, listen to white or pink noise-either through speakers or a white noise masker machine. 3. Just because you have hyperacusis, your ears are no more susceptible to damage from sound exposure than those of someone who does not have hyperacusis! - THIS IS CRUCIAL! Instructions from rehab psychologist: 1. Reduce hypervigilant behavior ex. Don't tease up/brace yourself for sound - take a deep breath if you're about to be exposed to a sudden abrupt noise. Learn to relax your body in normal sound environments below 85db 2. Modify your lifestyle in order to get back to the things you did before you got hyperacusis. Ex. finding ways around doing certain things such as listening to music at a low volume, exercising outside or from home, going to restaurants during non-busy times, being seated in quieter areas, and educating loved ones about your condition 3. Stop researching and spending all your time browsing through hyperacusis forums and support groups. There is a lot of incorrect information floating around and the majority of the information is negative. Remember that the population of hyperacusis sufferers online only represent a small population of all the everyone who has hyperacusis/had hyperacusis and recovered.

+Adam Smith That's the standard advice but it does not work for everyone, I can tell you for sure. The difficult part is putting it in practice. The real question about hyperacusis is: how does one recover from unexpected exposure to very loud sounds, to sounds that could harm anyone or feel painful to a normal person? I mean, if you walk on the streets or even by the seaside, near beachfront houses let's say.. without hearing protection (according to the stardard advice you followed - environments where normal people do not use earplugs or earmuffs) and a power saw sounds like 10 metres away from you, behind a fence (you wouldnt be able to see there was going to be noise) how do you cope with it? does it set you back? is it going to make recovery from hyperacusis harder?

Adam Smith I have a question that i really need to know you say sounds 85db or lower wont hurt or damage ears but what if your out in a restaurant and a construction worker accidentally turns on a loud tool or a firework goes off or a child screams. How did you just manage 85db and 85db below only there are so many things that can destroy your ears outside and give you hearing damage without ear plugs. Please could anyone answer i just dont understand Adams 85db or lower wont damage ears so no need for ear plugs and hearing protection there are so many loud things that can happen without ear plugs its impossible to go outside and just keep it 85db and below.

How did you cure it?
@softdriedfruit
@softdriedfruit 21 күн бұрын
@@josephcazares1892 I followed the advice given at 12:47. The most important part was learning to relax myself when a noise startled me. I would remind myself that I'm not in danger and the noise isn't actually damaging my ears. After a long time committing to calming down after a noise I eventually stopped startling at all, and loud noises didn't stress me out anymore. Then, even longer after that I started to notice I wasn't feeling the pain anymore. I didn't say anything to anyone for quite a while because I didn't want to get my hopes up, but it hasn't come back since then. Try not to flinch and don't tense up. Don't stress about not being able to do it at first or it taking longer than you want. I think that hyperacusis feeds off your mental state. The worse you feel the more it hurts. Remember that you'll be okay, and you're not in danger. I learned misophonia and tinnitus kind of work the same way. I still have tinnitus but I rarely notice it anymore and I try to remain calm when I'm around a misophonia trigger. Just doing that helps a lot. The other advice helped too. I avoided very quiet areas by using white noise or music and I stopped using noise cancelling headphones when I was in normal listening environments. I would only use them if i really needed a break from a noise that wouldn't stop and I couldn't get away from. Make sure you've tried to relax and accept the noise first, but there's no point sticking around if it's just making you upset. We're trying to reduce stress. It would feel wrong not to mention that the hyperacusis began during a stressful and traumatic time in my life and it wasn't until long after that situation ended and I started to recover and be in a less stressful but not perfect place that the hyperacusis stopped. Doctors love to say "reduce stress" but I still believe you can do this even if you're not in the best conditions. I hope that helps. Good luck, be patient, it'll be okay.

Just wanted to leave this. I'm 26 now. Over a year ago I started hearing tinnitus (I produce music), first in my left ear, then also in the right ear. A lot of noises cover it up. But for example, if I'm in a quiet room and having a conversation I can easily hear it. It's a lot of different noises. Starting from white noise, low buzzing, steady high pitched signals and other things, difficult to describe. At the time when it started I also had massive hyperacusis. This video, one of not that many, helped me to calm down my anxiety around the symptoms. Now my tinnitus is louder, but funnily it almost doesn't bother me at all. Hyperacusis comes and goes and I definitely have to take care of my hearing more then other people, but I'm no longer scared of it. When it all started for me and I read comments of people saying they would no longer be terrified of their tinnitus after years of living with it. I remember feeling disappointed because I deeply hoped mine would disappear completely. I didn't want it to just stop evoking an emotional reaction in me. Now It sometimes is a little bit annoying, but it doesn't paralyze me. Most of the time I don't notice it or care for it. I can sleep with it (and I use ear plugs cuz outside noises bother me). It's a neutral thing that just is there. I'd say - the more a neurotic person you are - the more trouble you're gonna have with it. I think the problem with habituation for me mostly came from the need for a psychotherapy. Now that I got my shit mostly together - the sounds in my ears are the least of my concern. :P

@@devensingh9195 First of all, it wasn't major and I was never at the point of running away from flushing toilets, but headphones, eating dishes banging around, etc. with sufficient pressure definitely triggered fear-inducing pain that shot down through my neck. In an attempt to recover, I first went to a doctor that made me take pentoxifylline for a month which didn't seem to do anything. I completely stopped using headphones and listening to anything close to me purposefully during that time. Maybe it helped somehow, but it sure didn't seem like it. Then I encountered these videos and started using my ears normally again, and I think I acclimated back to pretty much normal very rapidly. My ears only get triggered now when I encounter abnormally loud sounds that I don't typically encounter on a daily basis. That's what worked for me, at least.

For quite some time, all I did was plug my ears as soon as I sensed the threat of a high-pitched, loud sound. Then I decided to work on myself, to learn how to deal more consciously with my discomfort, disciplined my nervous state through meditation, and trained my body. Today I can say that I am back to normal, at least as far as hyperacusis is concerned. I am treating vertiginous positional symptoms due to a temporomandibular joint disorder. I still have tinnitus. I developed it from playing guitar in rock bands and rehearsing in small rooms. Even though I began to wear ear protection fairly early on, the damage was already done. My hearing is still in the normal range but recently I experienced a spike as you had and became a bit more aware of the hypersensitivity. I also experience pulsatile tinnitus in my left ear. Hello Adam, my name is Joel Sanchez. Thank you for posting this video. I've been going through the same thing for about 8 months now. I have taken advice from my ENT or Neurotologist whom I saw in May of this year to push through it without much other recommendation from him. I wish I had seen your video sooner. My wife and 7 year old boy have been very cool about the whole thing. It's been rough for all of us, that's for sure. Early in the experience I decided not to look online for info because I was afraid of what I would find.......negativity. I was in the darkest place I've ever been. Fast forward. I'm looking forward to months 10-12 and a full recovery. I'm going to follow your recommendations thoroughly and I've already schedule a meeting with the only TRT providers within the entire state of New Mexico. I can't wait to begin the next and hopefully final chapter of the healing process. Question: Have you heard of people relapsing months or even years later? Hopefully I will be able to jump back into playing music in the future. All it took was one time of me forgetting my earplugs during rehearsal, but I really never used them much since I was 15. I just turned 40. Your opinion? I discovered these headphones when things get really bad or when I go to movies or concerts (ya right, not since last year). I think they would help musicians who hate using earplugs to prevent going through this themselves. You can still hear what your band is doing as well as your guitar tone and everything gets cut out after 86 decibels, quite amazing. I wish I had them before all this happened. You might want to check them out. www.safetycompany.com/hearing-protection/ear-muffs/howard-leight-r-01526-impact-sport-folding-earmuffs-nrr-22/?gclid=CjwKCAjwl_PNBRBcEiwA4pplRT38vw09lrw2ut_ZlgA0D2XOT-UeS5T5GAElhDoxk_MpEM0SmgCDXhoCKgMQAvD_BwE I'm trying to download your hearing chart, but the link is not working. I still don't know why it happened, except that I remember the first time was I believe a day or two after a car passed my home and backfired. It was so loud that I and someone with me jumped. Scared me to death. My heart was racing. It may have been that shockingly loud bang out of nowhere that caused it, or perhaps somehow linked to tinnitus from an infection. I have no idea. It went away within about 4 or 5 days the first time, and about 3-4 days the second time. Thereafter, once it only lasted I believe a couple days as well. I never had it again. I wish I had answers. I spoke to an audiologist who could not say why it was happening at the time, but suggested possibly somehow linked to TMJ and tinnitus or Menniere's disease of the ear.

I have this problem. But it's not a permanent thing for me. I get it occasionally. I suffer from severe anxiety to the point where I get all sorts of weird physical symptoms. I have observed that during an anxiety attack (may not be full blown), sometimes my ears suddenly feel plugged or I am able to hear sounds of the water gushing through the pipes in high volume which makes it unbearable for me to relax. During the hyperacusis moments I hear pink noise followed by some random videos on KZbin. Gradually, as my attention shifts to the video my hyperacusis also goes away.

Do you still get it? Do you think it's linked to anxiety? I have severe depression, anxiety and excessive worrying. This condition just came on tonight for me, about 7 hours ago. Literally, it came on just that fast. My voice sounds extremely loud, there's a low vibrating hum in my ear during certain sounds such as water running or toilet flushing, and if the heater "pops" I flinch. In just hours, I'm trying to find stories of anyone who can say this goes away. One person said it went away once and came back a long time later. Another person said above that he turned up the radio to condition himself to the louder sound and his ear adjusted and has been continually fine since. I am perplexed by what caused this in me because I honestly live an extremely quiet life. No TV, no radio, no music, clubs, restaurants, etc.... just KZbin videos. Been staying with family the last few months and woke up today to a loud, vibrating tree branch shredder machine that was a ways away but sounded like it was a vacuum outside my door. Within hours I can't even speak because I am so loud sounding and the vibration humming sends me into panic.

The way I did this is play Pink Noise on my speakers all night for months to keep my ears busy and not let them get sensitive because of the silence. Other than that I just stopped being afraid of noise and went against the pain and slowly but surely my ears got stronger and stronger. If you want a better explaination let me know! ty for posting this. very informative. I began having this issue about 2 weeks ago, it's been keeping me from getting sleep at night, my main issue is getting startled from small noises, sometimes some sounds can be painful for me. In the afternoon it's not so bad, no big issues, at night little sounds make me jump & startle me it's horrible. Hoping this will get better. anyhow, thanks for posting this, good to know I'm not the only one with this issue, I had no idea what was wrong until I began to snoop around on the net.

I´ve had hyperacusis from age 16. I´m 65 now. I used to think it was from drumming but only recently realised the real cause was gunfire in the obligatory cadet force at school. Let me tell you that there will be periods when it gets a lot better, at least that´s the way it´s been for me for 50 years. When it was bad I couldn´t even tolerate my own voice. Loud sounds have always remained intolerable - which was very isolating when I was younger - discotheques anybody?....but my tolerance to normal volume levels has always improved over time. There is more help out there than ever because of the Net. Don´t get down about it, don´t avoid all sound, be patient, manage your problem, and enjoy life, you´re not alone. For things like the hoover just accept that you have to wear earplugs, which cut out high frequencies.

Pink noise antidepressant etc to help with the physical symptoms as well as the phobias. I think what’s difficult is there’s all kinds of hyperacusis so everybody needs a different approach. I had terrible pain and ttts which has lasted much longer than any ear pain. Along with terrible noise phobias which made healing much longer. My physical symptoms went away fairy soon. But my ttts from anxiety took a long time and still can happen it I get startled from a noise. My neck shoulder will get tight but it goes away very soon like the next day. It’s a tonight road but I’m so glad you have made it through

@@tokenblack7983 I saw you under the pink noise video. Can you please share your experience here? Did your condition come on quickly? Mine came on inside of about an hour. At 7pm I was fine and by 8pm, I was getting spooked by the feeling of a strange undertone of humming when I heard certain sounds. Thereafter within a couple hours, I cannot stand to talk, as my voice sounds extremely loud. My elderly parents loud tv was so startling to me (I'm naturally a spooked person) that I began trembling because I had no idea why it seemed like my ears were "vibrating." Water running and toilet flushing causes that "vibrating hum" in my ears as the sound is magnified. I feel no pain; just panic during the noise and this vibrating phenomenon. I'm totally perplexed. I actually panicked thinking this was some sort of coronavirus symptom. I can't find your story. Can you kindly tell me, please? I feel there is no way this is "allergies" and there's no ringing in the ears. I have, though, had major depression my whole life, hypochondria, OCD, and extremely hyper sensitive. Have you had this? Does this condition go away? I saw one person say they were healed and it came back.

Faith After Dark yes it can go away but we can have setbacks which I’ve had when we get spooked by a loud noise again. It’s part of the overall process. It sux sometimes but it’s part of healing too. You have to on your guard at first for a while and use common sense but then gradually you’ll get better and better. Be patient positive and smart. Watch ur mental health. Do not spiral into depression. H feeds off of depression somehow

Hi there ! I have hyperacusis, and one of the difficult questions when you have this condition is : Is this uncomfortable sound just bothering me because I’m sensitive or is it dangerous for me and will worsen my condition ? The piece of advice of the professionals seems to be Protect your ears only for noises more than 85dB. But when you have bad bad bad hyperacusis a 75dB noise is lived like a trauma, maybe it is just a feeling, of the ear is indeed more fragile ? I don’t know, the line between bothering and noxious is blurred, anyway I think it a good idea to have a dB-meter handy. For example my shower that I found loud is 75dB, that means not dangerous, so I should listen to it from time to time, to get used to it eventually. I found an app to mesure dB, but I have no idea of its liability, have you tried to buy a real one, what do you think ?

Dear Adam, Thank you very much for your post. It's very helpful! I have tinnitus and hyperacusis as well, but I'm slowly on my way to recovery. I'm trying to build up my sound-tolerance now with the help of my audiologist. She told me to do some exercise to relax first and than expose myself to sounds I've prescribed as unpleasant. But it seems like a big step to expose myself all of a sudden to sounds that are way louder than what I can handle right now. I told her about your story and the device that you are talking about in your video, to train your sound-tolerance step by step (just like weight-lifting). But unfortunately she is not familiar with the device that you are talking about. Can you please write down the name of that device? Might it also possible to write down the schedule that you used to build your sound-tolerance up? That would be very helpful, many thanks!

@@faithafterdark7801 My tinnitus and hyperacusis are gone. The most important thing is not to panic. Like Adam, I looked up information online. Stop doing that, unless it is positive and helpful information, like Adams post. Stay away from negative forums or groups. I got rid of my panic attacks first with EMDR (it's a specific therapy, focused on trauma). And then I started with exposure therapy. Which means, you have to allow sound step by step into your life again. Your brains are now telling you that sounds hurt and are 'dangerous', but you have to get used to sound again with baby steps (which feels in the beginning like the opposite thing to do, but you have to). Also find yourself someone who believes that this can be healed, like a psychologist (a positive thinker about hyperacusis, which is hard to find but not impossible). I have struggled for a very long time. Many doctors told me that this was for life. Now I am happy that I was born with a stubborn heart ;-), I proved myself that it is possible. If you don't do anything, than the hyperacusis won't change. But if you are willing to work at progress, it will get better. It takes time. Your brains need some 'reset'. Also do some meditation, yoga etc. Comfort yourself with helpful and calming thoughts. Look up Julian Cowan Hill at youtube. He helps people as well, mostly with tinnitus, but also with hyperacusis. Good luck and take care.

I just woke up one day feeling like I was recovering from a loud concert, which I attend a lot, but not recently. My left ear is worse than my right one, but still both are affected. There are crackling sensations when I swallow and my right one stuffs up more than my left one. My voice also feels like I'm in a box, not normal hearing. Thank you Adam for posting this KZbin video. I recently (within the last month) developed tinnitus and hyperacusis; probably from heavy doses of antibiotics. I don't believe that my hyperacusis is as severe as yours, but, like you, the forums made the outlook appear very gloomy and depressing Your video is very informative. I now have information which I can discuss with my ENT and audiologist. Can you attend most movies in comfort and can you attend events with a live band, such as a wedding? Would you consider those events above 85dB? I was at an event and the loudness of the guest speakers using the microphone was intolerable. I saw the band set up and knew I had to leave, severely upset since I believed that I could no longer attend such activities. How would you handle those situations, or are these types of events out of the question? Would you wear ear protection such as musicians' earpieces? This is all new to me and still distressing even though one can "adjust" to most situations. Thanks.

I want to start healing myself and body ASAP. I wanted to know a few things...Can I do treatment for this by playing a pink noise video in my room via my surround sound system for our Smart TV? Or do I need the sound machine to specifically do treatment? I also have a condition in my left ear called Tensor Tympani Tensor Syndrome aka TTTS, although I have Hyperacusis in both ears as well as Tinnitus and still fullness in both ears like you had also(like riding in an airplane). I want to start treatment regarding all these symptoms as soon as I can so I can be back to the road of recovery. Please let me know if listening to the pink noise during sleep time and in quiet environments would be the best therapy for me right now. Thank you again for your video! -Paul

Paul, did you ever get help for this? How are you doing? I'm a newbie here and it's night #1 for me. Haven't even spoken to an ear doctor yet. Are you still suffering? I have no pain but my own voice sounds extremely loud as does water running, toilet flushing, low toned voices, even chewing. And the heater "pops" throw a jolt of panic in me too. It's mid-covid so I doubt I'd even want to go into a doctor at this point. I am just finding that this has a name. And there's no way its allergies. Please share your experience? Thanks so much.

@@awarewolf2685 My hyperacusis came twice. Once for just about a week, and then it went away. The other time was about 3 days. It hasn't come back since. I spoke to an audiologist and he said it could be linked to Menniers. I also have TMJ. I do not know what caused it. But since covid was going on, I couldn't visit a doctor because they were all closed unless for emergencies. I was thankful it went away on its own but again I have no idea what caused it.

I don't know if you're seeing this as its been 4 years, but I just got this condition tonight and tested the theory listening to a pastor on KZbin on my phone. If I put the phone on low volume and put it up to my right ear, his voice sounds like it's got a fair amount of mid range and treble. Up to my left ear, it's more bass in his voice. If you're still getting this, did you get better in 4 years?

@@Adamantaimai I took a direct approach without using fear as my guide. No ear plugs unless something was over 90 decibels. No loud concerts...outings etc. I used my own sound therapies which included music ...nature sounds...birds etc. The birds were painful at first but I slowly acclimated to most everything by listening to them. I was highly sensitive to birds. Most music hurt as well so...I carefully selected something not too harsh. I used Fleetwood Mac rumors with just a few song titles. Using big comfy headphones and Not ear buds as they are too loud. I listened daily for months as improvements came at a snail's pace but were obvious. Being diligent in sound therapy is a must. Also being pro active with every day Normal sounds that won't harm Normal ears....will Not harm your ears. The huge lie is that Normal sounds cause ear damage. Not many believed me but it paid off for me. I simply used youtube to find any sound possible. Played them for limited times and increased the time and volumes as I progressed. Yes...it was a bit painful at first but in time my ears craved the sound...even in slight pain...they craved the sound. You can see it happen too. There will be ups and downs...set backs may last a day or 3....do not give in or give up. If you are in control...you will be safe. Keep sounds at reasonable levels and increase them on purpose. Increase sounds to loud levels for a couple of seconds then a few more when able. Not blasting sound but challenging it. In time...I even used a very loud chop saw in my shop. I would turn it on for 2 seconds. Yes....very loud but my ears were ok. Hyperacusis is more about those sudden shifts in sound which can torment our nervous system....causing us fear. Overcoming fear is what makes us move forward again .Always sleep to white or pink noise....rain etc. Sound feeds our auditory system and helps re program our collapsed ability to sound tolerances. Please believe me. I was extremely sensitive to running water along with most everything else. Human voices hurt me daily. I also had loud tinnitus and miso phonia . A living hell for 5 years.

Mine confuses me, sound doesn’t hurt my ears, and nothing sounds louder than it should, but the hiss or static I’m hearing increases with external volume, and that’s any volume, even my breath at times, again it doesn’t cause any pain, just the static increases with any volume.... currently waiting for a ENT I got referred too to get in touch with me.

If you have Hyperacusis some people say always protect your ears at all costs and don't ever use sound therapy. Others say use sound therapy (pink noise) but don't over use ear protection for normal day sounds/activities as it becomes more sensitive... Obviously in loud places use protection. What do we do? Example being here..: "Wearing hearing protection making hyperacusis worse is a bullshit lie made up by TRT enthusiasts. You absolutely MUST protect your ears and be in silence to recover. Sound therapy makes hyperacusis worse. STOP doing sound therapy, PROTECT your ears as much as possible, AVOID loud environments at all costs, and most importantly give yourself time. The reason your hyperacusis is getting worse is because you aren't protecting enough".

+lastcall170 I have had hyperacusis for many years already. It got extreme in 2011 and I still have not fully recovered, although I have made significant progress. However, I have learned a lot about H and hearing on this tough path. I have put in practice the "take the hits" approach, which is the stardard advice "don't use hearing protection in environments where normal people don't use them". Well, I disagree with that because in "normal environments" there are sounds that may really damage your hearing, the obvious example being firecrackers at Christmastime (they are everywhere in some places, it depends where you live), also the odd noise of unexpected construction machinery or power tools (i.e. someone is cutting something behind their fence and you wouldnt be able to see that and suddenly... power saw, or drill.. ufff). In my opinion, the longer time you spend without hearing really offending sounds (I mean sounds that feel painful to everyone, to people with normal hearing) the better chance for recovery you have. At the same time in a controlled environment (home) there has to be background sound most of the time; one has to try to listen to music, play white or pink noise, etc.. these can be combined (pink noise on the hi-fi system and music on headphones, or you can use different kind of headphones as background and talk to your family at the same time.. you are going to hear them for sure, heheee). I try to be optimistic about this and my H was very severe, LDLs around 50 dbs for all frequencies (and this was measured when I was feeling already slightly better, not in my worst day..). A good tip for H recovery: after building up your LDLs a little (dont do this with very low LDLs like 50 dbs) listen to music that has low sounds but also high-pitched sounds and very fast and sudden changes in volume: jazz, for instance. If I had to make a sequence of music to listen to at different stages of progress I would say: Step (1) white or pink noise; after some time (2) classical guitar (spanish guitar) or accoustic guitar, piano maybe; (3) classical music with more instruments like wind instruments; (4) jazz; (5) your choice, anything at the right volume; high-pitched voices are usually harder to tolerate. Good luck!

I made a complete recovery. As for staying away from everyday sounds..well,I cant. I had to go to work every day,shop and run errands.I had all kind of exposures including fireworks. I had absolutely NO damage! I never expected or heard of this threat before. I lived my life as if just becoming acclimated was all I needed to do. It worked. I feel bad for those who believe that all sounds will cause damage. Not true!

The way I got this shit was pretty straight forward. I was calibrating speakers by playing test tones at different frequencies at moderate volume, I played a 14K tone, the speaker was three feet away pointed at my left ear. My left ear immediately hurt and I covered my ear and muted the sound within a second. Sensitivity was brutal the first few months but gradually improved somewhat. I went to a few doctors and they had no idea what I'm talking about. So I just lived with it for a couple of years and was able to live somewhat normally and be generally happy. However, later on I was prescribed some antibiotics for something else (which it turns out I didn't even need). Within an hour of taking them, my ears started ringing very loudly and continued for an hour. They then calmed down but not completely, ringing lingered and never went away, plus the sensitivity became much worse. Now, another 3 years later, I still have ringing and hissing in both my ears plus pretty bad Hyperacusis in my left ear.
