Hi Kyla! I worked in consulting in NY for the past two years after graduating college in 2021 and I recently quit my job to try to transition to software engineering. I'm set to start my bootcamp on October 9th, so I'm pretty excited/nervous in anticipation of that. Just wanted to say that watching your videos has been pretty inspiring and has helped me feel more confident about my decision. Wishing all the best!

Hi!! Dang, I hope consulting wasn’t so hard on you 😭 I do hear for consulting not focused on tech, it’s hard and lots of hours (I’m only assuming tho that it was non tech because you’re switching into tech). But I’m so excited for your next journey!! I’m happy you’re feeling excited about it because that’s a good sign. Thank you for taking the time to write this, I feel very grateful reading this message 🙏 Best of luck to you!! You’ve got it!!

Thank you for these videos! I'm a career changer as well and will most likely go through a bootcamp in the upcoming months. I really enjoy your raw and honest take on your experience. If you ever feel like doing a more technical video, it would be awesome to hear your perspective/understanding of the cycle of software development and the tools you use. I'm so narrow in my learning right now that I'm focusing on learning the javascript langauge that I don't really know the whole picture as well as I'd like to. ELI5 kinda take on the industry and job if you will. Anyhow, thanks for these videos and hope you're enjoying the career change thus far!

Best of luck when you start!! I hope you’re excited ☺️ That is a great idea for a video and thank you for sharing it. I have been getting comments asking about what technologies I use so I’ll keep that in mind for a future video! I know exactly what you mean honestly. Even at this point of my career journey, I feel like I’m not knowledgeable about the entire picture (as I’ve similarly said in my video 😅). There’s lots of things to learn so don’t feel behind on that! I’ll try my best to incorporate more of what I actually use in work vlogs as well. Thank you for the well wishes! I am very much enjoying what I do now and I’m hoping you will too 😊

Hi K, I've been watching your video for a week now and I am inspired by your journey and career change. My question is since you are a software engineer now and I want to know what type of programming language I should focus on if I want to excel in this industry. By the way I am currently studying computer programming as a career change and I am in my 30s now but I know it is not too late to pursue your dreams. Well more power to you and God bless 😊
@kylaquilos
@kylaquilos Жыл бұрын
Wow I love that!! Yes, it’s never too late especially if it’s what you wanna pursue! And thank you for watching ☺️ Regarding programming languages, it will depend on what you’re doing really. For my experience as a full stack developer, my main language is JavaScript. We usually use TypeScript though because we work with larger applications and typing can help a LOT. TypeScript is built on JavaScript. I think JavaScript is really important to learn. You can use it in both frontend and backend. I would say Python would also be an important language to learn because it can be widely used although I don’t use it for my day to day. I have used C# for backend development and I know it’s also commonly used! Then you got the basics at least to learn HTML and CSS(stylesheet language) for Frontend development which aren’t really “programming languages” but are languages you should learn as a Frontend developer. I think Java is also a very common language to use, so if you’ve got the time to learn that and it’s related to what you want to do, definitely do so! I’m not sure if this helped out or anything but I tried to explain from my experience 😅 hope it helped! And good luck!!! What you’re doing is not easy, so you deserve some huge props for it. You’ve got this! I’m here if you have more questions :)

Hey kyla i am also 2nd year electrical engineering student how can i learn software during my undergrad love from kashmir❤
@kylaquilos
@kylaquilos Жыл бұрын
Hi Kashmir! So for me, when I went through electrical engineering, you could choose to specialize in digital signal processing which required some programming classes like Python or C, but I don’t think it was a main focus. If that’s what you’re interested in and you still wanna stay an electrical engineer, you can specialize in that, but speak with your counselor to make sure that’s the path you wanna take. There’s also the option to switch to computer engineering because EE and computer engineering classes usually overlap for some classes and you’re only a 2nd year so it isn’t super later to switch I think, but again, make sure you speak with your counselor! if you wanted to actually switch to computer science as a major because you only want to do programming, that’s an option too, but ask yourself what makes more sense for your situation then speak with the counselor. I am only providing options in case you weren’t aware of these for school and I hope this answers your question! I wish you the best on what you end up doing 😊

@kylaquilos
@kylaquilos Жыл бұрын
@syed_wahid Ohh I see. I think if you wanted to stay an electrical engineer but you know you have these skills, you should try software engineering internships to get your experience there (if you are able to). I have some EE friends who have software engineer jobs because they had internships more related to coding, it’s just that their degree is in EE. Even for my friends who had other unrelated degrees, they found an internship for software engineering and just continued with that in the real world. Btw, it’s impressive that you know those languages even if CS isn’t what you’re majoring in!
