The Prince by Machiavelli is anemic! His magnum opus is his ‘Discourses on the First Decade of Titus Livy’ - which are his political commentary on the history of Rome from inception to empire.

@ it is dense!! I read the Prince, again, last week over the course of an evening. The Discourses are a marathon 🏃♂️.

'the gulf between how one should live and how one does live is so wide that a man who neglects what is actually done for what should be done moves towards self-destruction rather than self-preservation. The fact is that a man who wants to act virtuously in every way necessarily comes to grief among so many who are not virtuous. Therefore if a prince wants to maintain his rule he must be prepared not to be virtuous, and to make use of this or not according to need.' Love The Prince.

I loved Elena Ferrante's My Brilliant Friend, which honestly is a surprise to absolutely no one cause I constantly rave about it! But I recently read her collection of speeches/essays called In The Margins and she spoke so highly of Dante's portrayal of Beatrice in the Divine Comedy, I've been itching to read it too!

Thanks for this wonderful review video, very engaging introduction, & quite a few of these authors are new to me. I love Eco, his semiotics & novels, what a giant of the twentieth century. Do you know the paintings of Giorgio Morandi? He's one of my mainstay favourites - so delicate, profound & moving. I return to him regularly. He is also quite a poet's painter, & he's inspired many collections of ekphrastic poetry, an astounding, quiet recluse.

@@apoetreadstowrite LOL Funny you say that, I recently read a poem about that. Vincent Millay's pithy four-line poem, "First Fig," celebrates going your own way and taking life by the horns. Describing their life as a candle that's burning from both ends at once, the speaker affirms that life should be full of intensity, vigor, and passion (rather than just, say, conformity and politeness).

Umberto Eco's The Name of the Rose is most definitely on my list to read in 2025 now :) I'm still reading Clarice Lispector's The Complete Short Stories. I'm half way through, both in order to savor every page, and also because I have a pile of books on the go, with more piling up. I'm sure no one can relate😆
