Mr. Durfee. I have been following you pretty consistently over the past year, and must say that you are among the greats of the moldering Acropolis that is BookTube. My favourite videos from you have to be your writing advice in the car, your Stephen King reviews (Revival was my first, and by far my favourite of his), and these collection videos. My heart was rend assunder when I heard of your condition and the day you stop making videos will be one of great sadness. If you can, continue your ongoing salvos here on KZbin for as long as you're able. Thank you and God bless.

Centenial was a very formative series for me in my childhood. I will never forget it, and it has so much wisdom and descriptions of what it means to be human. I will never forget the duel the major has with Skimmerhorn, or the cowboy drive from Texas to Colorado

My first exposure to JM was in grade 6. Readers Digest did Centennial as a brief story. The story was about Lame Beaver. I was captivated by that story. I have been reading him ever since and live all his books.

I just spent my two monthly audible credits on 'Space' and 'Chesapeake'. It blows my mind he didn't start writing until he was half century.

Michener is one of my favorite authors, even if I've only read three -- Centennial, Texas, and Chesapeake. I have the pleasure of looking forward to reading some other heavy hitters for the first time. I'm thinking of reading Drifters next, just got last week. But can't wait to read Hawaii, Alaska, The Covenant, Tales South Pacific and The Source. Those I'm most eager to read.

Thanks for your reviews, Brian. I just read Lonesome Dove, from your recommendations, of course. I was thinking about the Texas the Novel thinking maybe I would enjoy it and of course here you are giving a small review of every Michener novel.

I love James Michener and own many of his books. I didn’t know it was hard to find hard covers of his works now. I haven’t read one of Michener’s books in a few years but you are creating an interest.

Texas and Alaska are on the TBR, but I imagine if I like those I’ll pick up more. Thanks for the video!

An excellent break down of his novels, thank you! I plan to read his novel Poland soon. Also a break down of your Wilbur Smith collection would be dope as well!

I did not know about Michener before I saw your list of favourite books where you had Alaska near the very top. So far I have read Hawaii, Texas, Centennial and Alaska. I have loved all of them and every one of them gives a great flavour of the location they're in. Poland is up next.

The first 2 books I ever read by James Michener were Caravans and the Source. I read those back in the early 1980s when I was a teenager. And I was hooked. That was 40 years ago. I have since read pretty much most of his other books from the 1960s onwards. I have not yet read the early books. They seem to be quite hard to fine. I think Caravans is the earliest novel of his I have ever read. My most favourite books by James Michener are Centennial and Texas. You don't seem to have Texas. Have you read Texas? Have you read Michener's autobiography - The World is My Home. That is a Great Read as well!!

I still need: Hawaii, Centenial, Poland and the Source - but I have some you don't: "Journey" a short Klondike adventure, "Legacy" an American political dynasty drama, and "Recessional" set around a retirement home. I also need to read any of them but this kind of History/Geography narrative sounds really sweet.

Hi Brian, this is Cathrin from Germany. I am a huge fan of JM and have read almost all his books. Started with 16 (now I am 57). First one was Poland since I had to give a presentation at school about a European country. Then came Space, after that The Covenant. I read all in English. JM's use of the language is really outstanding. By the way, you have not mentioned his BEST BOOK: his autobiography "The world is my home". You HAVE TO read it if you have not done so already. 😊 One question: do you still get JM books without problem in the US ? Here in Germany every book shop tells you that they are out of print both in English and German. 😢 Best regards from Hamburg 💐

You didn't mention two of my favorites, The Tell and The Adventurer. The Adventurer was my first novel by him. The Tell is a book that anyone interested in the middle east and how things got so screwed up should read.

Great. Thank you. Is Poland a different book then "Mazurka"? Or is that just the german title or sth.? Michener is my favourite author at the moment.

I wish he was more main stream. No one has ever got and kept my attention in a historical novel like him. He would have at least 5 of my top 20 reads. I'm 71yrs old and have enjoyed reading since I first could. I do wish you hadn't talked about Alaska like it was a text book, because it's so much more.

I'm 62 and first read him in my 20's.After a couple books I realized I needed to pace myself so I could read something new to me for the rest of my life.

Just to put these books into context most were published 30, 40 and some even 50+ years ago so when Brian says up to the modern day that modern day is in the year they were published so try to remember that if you decide to pick these books up…I have many of them and I highly recommend them but many of them are dated and the modern history cuts off at the publishing date…One prime example is The Source which is about the Hebrew culture and that area of the world which was published in 1965…Do you know how much history and how many events have changed that area of the world in the last 57 years??? Let’s just say there’s been a lot…again I like James Michener and highly recommend these books to people but just keep in perspective the modernism is quite dated in most of them…

always been fascinated and intrigued by him and his books but never read one. Primarily because none of them hit on a place I have much interest in. Space might be the one though. As an aside, I am still in awe of your wide range of genre interests.

Hi Mr Durfee. Today I started the Forgetting Moon(published by Simon's and Schuster's Saga Press) for the first time, because I wanted to read the The Lonesome Crown on release date. I am 150 pages in and it is giving me A Game of Thrones vibe.

I have read Hawaii and Chesapeake They were both so good! He does an outstanding job following a group of people/families through time and the generations. One of the best authors I have ever read in historical fiction.

someday there will be a huge novel called MICHENER. i had no idea South Pacific was based on his breakout novel. you forgot IBERIA, which i only knew because my old man took forever to read it and it was in our house. edit: a quick delve and i see it's not considered a 'novel' in the classic sense. more a travelogue.
