Proud of you. I wish I could help exponentially. Speaking up (becoming an "apostate") is necessary. It's hard because of how the book tells you to obey and mindlessness would have you do just that. Morality is to learn how to be kind to others without any affiliation, but the book would have you do it only to specific people (their own) when all other books ask you to do that. As an obvious issue: we're all from different places, background, languages (I am french! from Canada), ideologies (not really, but yes) and there are no guides to be secular humanists. Sadly, this label comes with the price of having to learn a few more things and that's tedious. Islam asks you to drill countless more things than any religion and has fear mongering to propel it... so has dictatorships, fascism and people that abuse others. Speak up and be - actually - courageous. I am sorry that the scale at which this matters might sound overwhelming, but... we're losing a beacon in this w_ a_ r that was the USA. I am Indonesian I have to fast during the month of Ramadan and I have to endure hunger all day long, it's not easy to be an atheist in my country. If you are an agnostic, it's also not easy in my country, I even have to pretend to be a Muslim. If I'm honest with my family that I'm an atheist, they could kick me out, especially my uncle, who is very religious. He warns me to pray 5 times and read the Quran, but I actually don't do it and I don't want 😟😩 btw I am a girl I don't want wear hijab too my hair is my beautiful 👑 , and someday I hope move to Netherlands I heard there enough safe for atheist 🙂💜 How about you? I mean its how one interprets said religion. imo most monolithic religions tend to push people into radicalization. Islam, Christianity, Judaism, etc. Only difference is when a Muslim does it, the media labels it as radical Islam whereas when Christian's do it the media says they are fascist, racist, etc or in Judaism it would be Zionist, racist, etc. Either way, practice your religion on your own terms without interfering with other people's lives and equally be objective and neutral because you're doing the same thing as the radical muslim's by putting every muslim into the same basket.

Interesting. I am an atheist "exmuslim" from South Africa too. Exmuslim in quotes since I had never really taken Islam seriously growing up. I officially dumped the religion back in 2015 thanks to the cohort of heretics I had found online and on KZbin who encouraged me to think critically and disband from organised faith completely. I can’t imagine what you may have went through growing up, it’s not a choice to wear hijab or practice as they say. So why force it on children.🫣 the prayers are waay to excessive and interfere with day to day especially working and your sleep schedule. as well as so many other things that just are impractical and untrue. Life is much better as an agnostic or quite honestly any other faith outside of Islam and all its crazy rules.

@@Han06_02 yeah it's mostly the asian and cape Malay groups that are Muslim here. These folks are very indoctrinated in their beliefs because of the way their parents enforced Islam on them growing up. I technically didn't come from an overly religious household and as a guy the experience is a little different - in other words less religious impression, more freedom etc . Although that doesn't mean Islam didn't have a choke hold on me. For instance, Ramadan was a particularly frustrating time for obvious reasons. For women, the experience can be horrifying particularly if the background is excessively religious. My advice to them is usually to conceal their dissent until one can live freely. True, life's better without Islam but it can be difficult to align with anything else other than a thing which has been ingrained in you since birth. It takes years to recover and you have to protect yourself from becoming a nihilist if you don't decide to replace your beliefs.

Christianity is only partially better. It depends on the specific church. In the Philippines it leads to a lot of suffering. I hope the Christians in Indonesia implement a form of Christianity that's less extreme than the Catholicism in the Philippines, where the church would rather have teenagers risk their lives and destroy their future giving birth and becoming teenage mums than teaching sex ed, allowing contraception (two things that are proven to decrease the teen pregnancy rate), and so on. Keeping people in the cycle of poverty in the name of religion is also quite extremist.

I think in general the shifting of the Overton window to the right left many people with left wing ideas out in the cold as far-left nutters, and the left wing parties hunted or votes on the right instead of the left, shrinking the Overton window, disenfranchising the left leaning voters for moderate right-wing voters to take their place. And no party could credibly arise, as progressive left wing politics has been deemed extremist. And that include ideas such as everyone's equal worth and the right of religious freedom, and more importantly the freedom from religion. Left wing politics is saturated by identity politics, virtue signaling, political purity and the absolute fear of saying the wrong thing. That breeds the dismissive mindset because if you don't take a stand you can't be accused of supporting the "wrong thing". It is cowardly and very politically motivated. The left have forgotten our roots of marching and standing up for our beliefs regardless of personal cost. This hurts those that so many leftist claims to champion, because they get dismissed as too problematic. Racist and Islamophobia are powerful invectives but remember those mostly comes from the right or the groups we should oppose, we should ignore those when they are just used to frighten us. I think that is the root cause, the left in general are afraid of getting hurt, and you can't fight efficiently if that is the case.

Very well summarized. As a European, it frightens me, how critic of Islam is hardly a thing in the political debate. Politicians only discuss Muslims and how to treat refugees worse. And when talking about legitimate problems of Muslims in Europe, the political discussion mostly just resorts to racist talking points and non-effective policies, while the root cause of Islam is not talked about at all. I also think a lot of the pro-Palestine demonstrations have shown, that some left wingers have seriously deranged or naive view points, when it comes to Islamism. It is always a thin line. I'm an ex-catholic. I left religion when I was 10 and my parents made little to no comment about it. My dad's family had never been religious, whereas on my mom's side, other than my grandparents (who still to this day aren't happy with my decision), religion is just a vestigial part of their every-day lives. That's the case for many people here in Italy, they're "culturally" catholic (like, they go to church on Christmas, or think that someone's watching over them, but they can't quite put their finger on who it is), but not very active, because people don't trust the Church as much as they used to. There was even an article about how religion in Italy is becoming more "individual" and "spiritual", straying away from religious institutions. My mom even had a Buddhist phase, before turning away from religion altogether a few years ago. My little sister is the only one left in our family who still believes, but she doesn't go to church because she doesn't trust the institution (as I was saying). In Italy, the left (which I consider myself to be a part of, as a gay person) is always ready to bash the Catholic church and tear it to shreds, whereas Islam cannot be touched. This of course has to do with the fact that one is perceived as a (pre)dominant religion we have to free ourselves from, while the other is a meek little thing that needs to be protected. I get where they're coming from, but it's very unfair imo. I really, really despise this approach. You hit the nail on the head: people deliberately ignore the stuff that doesn't flow with their narrative.

What she went through is completely normal and present in every family. Older generations of parents are attached to their religious practices because they correlate even the smallest material progress to the amount of prayer and emotion they invest, rather than input of material effort to output of material results. You have to forgive your parents because they teach from the heart and because they grew up learning by fear and insecurity. The right thing for every parent to do is to allow their children to choose between atheism or theism and irreligion or religion - that's true freedom. When children, by themselves, voluntarily, reach the point where their beliefs and values align with their parents', then and only then will there be harmony and the child is truly fit to take lead on their parents' lives and see them through old age.
