My Journey of Working from Mountains - E2 | Cheap Accommodation in Manali during Covid

We are a couple working into IT industry and working from Mountains/Manali from last five months now. In this series, we are sharing our journey to Manali and experiences while working from mountains. In this particular episode, I am walking through accommodation part of our trip. We are staying near Hidimba temple and it is a beautiful studio apartment inside an Apple orchard with no other tourist stays nearby. It is secluded but still all places are accessible from here. Hidimba Temple is 5 minutes walk, near by grocery shops are 12 minutes walk, Old Manali is 20 minutes walk from here. We park our car on road side and from there it is 6 minutes walk to our home.
This studio apartment is fully furnished with a king size bed, fully functional kitchen with all utensils to cook, washroom with geyser and room heater is provided too. We are paying 15000 rupees a month for this place which excludes the electricity bill. Electricity bill is not much in Himachal and as this place is a residential one, so per unit charges are less too. We got 3500 rupees for two months where we were using a 1.5 Watt heater and geyser.

This particular place is listed on Airbnb and I found it from there. Price could be very different from what I paid (may be twice or thrice) but if you want owner's number then I can share it over email. You can mail me on [e-mail] This was the 2nd place where we stayed and the first one was a 2 BHK cottage - Villa Riverine where we paid around 60k per month. ( I don't recommend this place as its expensive and didn't like the owner's attitude who just wanted to mint as much money as he can.

Thanks Ravi, As this place is inside an orchard, we need to park our car on road side and from there it is 6-7 minutes walk to this place. Grocery shops and eating joints are within 10-12 minutes walking distance. Even if you don’t have vehicle, it is manageable from this property as Old Manali is like 20-25 minutes walk from this place. For Mall road, it requires 40 minutes walk.

Thanks for your comment, Broadband was there but it was having intermittent issues and we didn’t bother to get it fixed as the mobile network works just fine there. You easily get 10 mbps at all times.

Do you have power cut situation? If yes, then for how many hours a day and how do you manage your work in case of power cut?

From my five months experience in Manali, There were only three days when long power cut was there (almost 6-7 hours daytime). Luckily, they happened to be on weekends. But as a backup, I am carrying a car inverter in my car and in the worst case, I have an option to go and work from car, How cool is that :-) In general not much powercut, small powercuts are also rare here in Himachal.

Hello, thanks for your comment. Monitors are not part of homestay :P I carried them all the way from Hyderabad to here. Yeah, Six laptops!! This is also a story, Because of winters our laptops battery got impacted badly and we had to get new laptops (mine and Parul’s). So it was like two personal laptops, two work laptops, and two with dead batteries. Yeah, its a lot to carry but in my dzire, I was able to manage all this. For monitors, I bubble wrapped them and then place them in standing position (vertically)

Pricing is dynamic. When we came, at that time there were not many tourists and we were renting for 3 months or so, perhaps that's why 15k for us. Max I think two or three only, it is a small studio apartment and comfortable for two. Also, no parties/loud music/noise allowed as sanity of place must be maintained.

Wifi is included for free but it was not consistent (may be something to do with router placement as owner themselves get good speed). So we are using mobile hotspot and have JIO and and Airtel. Both gives good speed.

You are right. Now it is not the time to travel (at least for leisure). If we were somewhere else in present situation then we would have definitely not travelled to anywhere. We travelled here last year when situation was not this bad (after getting tested and strictly stayed initial one month at home, we came with our parents) We are still here and will be staying at least for rest of 2021. As per me, what would have been better is that 1. Somehow people travelling just for a couple of days should be avoided. If somebody is coming for a month or more then they may be still allowed (of course depending upon how bad/okay situation is) as it helps local market here. I am living here and I know the situation is bad. Daily, 1-2 deaths are reported in Manali. 2. Public transport should be avoided and only personal vehicles should be allowed (Again only if situation permits) 3. More importantly, people who are visiting themselves needs to be responsible towards mountains. Not just in covid times, but in regular times as well. It breaks my heart to trek 12 kms to the mountain top and find a chips wrapper there. We collect our waste here in three categories, vegetables/fruits waste is fed to cow nearby, paper is collected separately so that we can use it in Tandoor, and the plastic waste is dropped at recycling station nearby. 4. Talking about breaking my heart, people doing nuisance in Atal Tunnel (Going wrong side, peeing/drinking in Tunnel, dancing naked on roadside) is something that should be taken more strictly and should be punished to set an example. Also, recently a group was found travelling without a negative report and ePass and caught by police. They should be punished strictly.

I so wish that Himachal police get a little more strict towards such activities and teach defaulters a good lesson.
